Book A Study of Crack Closure in Fatigue

Download or read book A Study of Crack Closure in Fatigue written by T. T. Shih and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Crack closure phenomenon in fatigue was studied by using a Ti-6Al-4V titanium alloy. The occurrence of crack closure was directly measured by an electrical-potential method, and indirectly by load-strain measurement. The experimental results showed that the onset of crack closure depends on both the stress ratio, and the maximum stress intensity factor. No crack closure was observed for stress ratio, greater than 0.3 in this alloy. A two-dimensional elastic model was used to explain the behavior of the recorded load-strain curves. Closure force was estimated by using this model. Yield level stress was found near the crack tip. Based on this estimated closure force, the crack opening displacement was calculated. This result showed that onset of crack closure detected by electrical-potential measurement and crack-opening-displacement measurement is the same. The implications of crack closure on fatigue crack are considered. The experimental results show that crack closure cannot fully account for the effect of stress ratio, on crack growth, and that it cannot be regarded as the sole cause for delay.

Book Fatigue Damage Crack Growth and Life Prediction

Download or read book Fatigue Damage Crack Growth and Life Prediction written by F. Ellyin and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fatigue failure is a multi-stage process. It begins with the initiation of cracks, and with continued cyclic loading the cracks propagate, finally leading to the rupture of a component or specimen. The demarcation between the above stages is not well-defined. Depending upon the scale of interest, the variation may span three orders of magnitude. For example, to a material scientist an initiated crack may be of the order of a micron, whereas for an engineer it can be of the order of a millimetre. It is not surprising therefore to see that investigation of the fatigue process has followed different paths depending upon the scale of phenomenon under investigation. Interest in the study of fatigue failure increased with the advent of industrial ization. Because of the urgent need to design against fatigue failure, early investiga tors focused on prototype testing and proposed failure criteria similar to design formulae. Thus, a methodology developed whereby the fatigue theories were proposed based on experimental observations, albeit at times with limited scope. This type of phenomenological approach progressed rapidly during the past four decades as closed-loop testing machines became available.

Book Modelling of TMF Crack Growth in Polycrystalline Gas Turbine Alloys

Download or read book Modelling of TMF Crack Growth in Polycrystalline Gas Turbine Alloys written by Jordi Loureiro-Homs and published by Linköping University Electronic Press. This book was released on 2020-10-07 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main objective of the work presented in this Licentiate of Engineering thesis is to investigate and model the fatigue crack propagation behaviour of the nickel-based superalloy Inconel 792, with special attention to the industrial lifing of high-temperature components. In-phase (IP) crack propagation tests have been performed at different temperatures and loading regimes, including extended hold times. The observations from these tests have been the basis for establishing several hypotheses to describe the crack growth behaviour, which progressively have been verified experimentally and numerically. Most prominently, it has been observed that crack closure has a substantial impact on crack growth and can explain, to a large degree, the crack growth behaviour for this material under the conditions studied. This phenomenon has been observed experimentally and modelled numerically to extend further the precision of the methodology.

Book Experimental Study of Fatigue Crack Propagation and Retardation Using Polymethylmethacrylate

Download or read book Experimental Study of Fatigue Crack Propagation and Retardation Using Polymethylmethacrylate written by Francis J. Pitoniak and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fatigue cracks were grown in compact tension specimens of polymethylmethacrylate, a transparent polymer which was used as a model for metals. Various peak overloads applied to the constant DeltaK baselines used produced changes in the baseline load crack growth rates. A study of the monochromatic light interference fringe patterns emanating from the fatigue cracks at zero load indicated that the crack surface were closed along the saw cut edge and on the free surface of the specimens. The crack surfaces were displaced in the interior of the specimen at zero load. Measurement of the crack opening displacements from the fringe patterns indicated that the crack surfaces opened on the free surface at approximately half the baseline load level for a stress ratio of approximately zero. This is in agreement with the Elber crack closure concept.
