Book A Study of Baccalaureate Nursing Students Linking of Liberal Education with Their Professional Nursing Education

Download or read book A Study of Baccalaureate Nursing Students Linking of Liberal Education with Their Professional Nursing Education written by Nancy McCracken Rowe and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The education of nursing students has moved into institutions of higher learning from hospital based schools of nursing. This move has emphasized the integration of the liberal arts within the professional curriculum. It is within this context that professional nursing education is to prepare a liberally educated professional nurse. Nursing educators have been challenged to foster the integration of the liberal arts into the professional curriculum. This descriptive qualitative study investigates the baccalaureate nursing students' perspective of the contribution of liberal education within professional educations. A purposeful random sample of 21 senior nursing students enrolled in a nursing course focusing on chronic illness at a single-purpose baccalaureate college of nursing was used. The students were required, as an assignment for the course, to submit a weekly journal addressing the topic of which liberal education course supported their nursing practice and how that support occurred. These journals were the primary data source. The methodological approach was based on Bogdan and Biklen (1992), Lincoln and Guba (1985) and Patton (1990). The journals were analyzed with respect to which liberal education courses and which tenets of liberal education emerged as relevant. In addition, a schema and coding system was used to address how the linkage of liberal and professional educations occurred. Member-check interviews and peer debriefers were also used to increase trustworthiness of the data. The results of this study were that students linked liberal and professional educations in a variety of ways. The courses most commonly identified were behavioral and social sciences courses. The tenets most frequently identified were communication, critical thinking, and whole person. The students frequently described how their liberal education provided them insight about their clients. These courses/tenets also provided the students with the tools and understanding to examine themselves and their clients in broad comprehensive ways. This researcher concluded that if the tenets of liberal education are made explicit and fostered by faculty linking of liberal and professional education occurs.

Book Perceptions and Meanings of Liberal Education

Download or read book Perceptions and Meanings of Liberal Education written by Jacqueline Kayler DeBrew and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The purpose of this study was to understand (a) how BSN graduates perceive the relationship between their liberal education experiences in college and nursing practice; (b) how RN-BSN graduates and pre-licensure BSN graduates differ in these perceptions (c) what meanings practicing BSN nurses assign to their liberal education experiences in college; and, (d) how RN-BSN and pre-licensure BSN graduates differ in the meanings they assign to liberal education. Using content analysis, the researcher attempted to answer these questions through electronic questionnaires which gathered critical incidents and other data from participants who graduated from two types of nursing programs: RN-BSN and pre-licensure baccalaureate programs. Findings of this study demonstrated that both pre-licensure graduates and RN-BSN graduates perceive that their liberal educations are useful to nursing practice. Furthermore, the graduates from both types of programs believe that their liberal educations have led to both personal and professional gains. In addition, the graduates also held similar meanings about their liberal educations, which were overall positive. Findings of this study should help educators understand the value participants place on the bachelor's of science in nursing degree, which will in turn affect curricula and course development for nursing programs."--Abstract from author supplied metadata.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Future of Nursing explores how nurses' roles, responsibilities, and education should change significantly to meet the increased demand for care that will be created by health care reform and to advance improvements in America's increasingly complex health system. At more than 3 million in number, nurses make up the single largest segment of the health care work force. They also spend the greatest amount of time in delivering patient care as a profession. Nurses therefore have valuable insights and unique abilities to contribute as partners with other health care professionals in improving the quality and safety of care as envisioned in the Affordable Care Act (ACA) enacted this year. Nurses should be fully engaged with other health professionals and assume leadership roles in redesigning care in the United States. To ensure its members are well-prepared, the profession should institute residency training for nurses, increase the percentage of nurses who attain a bachelor's degree to 80 percent by 2020, and double the number who pursue doctorates. Furthermore, regulatory and institutional obstacles-including limits on nurses' scope of practice-should be removed so that the health system can reap the full benefit of nurses' training, skills, and knowledge in patient care. In this book, the Institute of Medicine makes recommendations for an action-oriented blueprint for the future of nursing.

Book Use of a Shadow the Nurse Intervetion in Early Baccalaureate Nursing Education and Its Influence on Professional Role Perspectives

Download or read book Use of a Shadow the Nurse Intervetion in Early Baccalaureate Nursing Education and Its Influence on Professional Role Perspectives written by Monika S. Schuler and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 147 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nursing students experience a great discrepancy between their ideal views of nursing obtained while in school and the realities of practice (Chappy, Jambunathan, & Marnocha, 2010). A key issue is role discrepancy which has been shown to result in difficult transitions into nursing and reality shock for the newly licensed nurse (Duchscher, 2009; Hickey, 2010; Young, Steunkel, & Bawel-Brinkley, 2008). Using the Reflection, Feedback, and Restructuring model as a conceptual framework, this study sought to examine if a shadow the nurse experience (STN) for novice baccalaureate nursing students led to a transformation in professional nursing role perceptions and goal development. Twelve sophomore level nursing students enrolled in a baccalaureate nursing program shadowed a registered nurse for a total of 16 hours and responded to guided reflective questions before and after the experience. Reflections were analyzed and synthesized through an interpretative phenomenological lens resulting in three themes related to role development before and three themes related to role development after the shadowing experience. Overall respondent's perspectives changed from a focus of the nurse as a primary caregiver in a hierarchal structure to a broader perspective recognizing the complexity of nursing and what it means to care. Additionally students linked practice to classroom learning and developed academic goals to address anticipated learning needs.
