Book Shadows and Starlight

    Book Details:
  • Author : John Knoepfle
  • Publisher : Indian Paintbrush Poets
  • Release : 2012
  • ISBN : 9780984652341
  • Pages : 72 pages

Download or read book Shadows and Starlight written by John Knoepfle and published by Indian Paintbrush Poets. This book was released on 2012 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What's new in this book? What is new comes from being eighty-nine. There is a great freedom in these poems. They range at will from the mundane to the utterly mysterious and deeply spiritual. There are conversations with friends and a conversation about a malfunctioning alarm clock with the poet's son. The poet crosses boundaries. He breaks rules. Emotions shift. Galaxies appear and reappear. The angel of death comes up with a comment on the poet's work. There is advice from Santa Claus. What more could a reader require? The shadows are deep. The starlight is bright. You will also find and enjoy Knoepfle's love of the words and rhythms of our daily speech -- and his way of laying a line on the page. It's all lower case, no caps except for the poet's "I," no punctuation, just the minimal clues so you can get the sound and sense. For Knoepfle, every line is a poem - in the way it sounds and in the way it stacks up with the others to create a surprise. Born in Cincinnati in 1923, John Knoepfle has seen a lot of history. He's a Purple Heart Veteran; as a boat officer on an attack transport in the Pacific during World War II, he took part in the landings at Iwo Jima and Okinawa. As a young writer and teacher, he joined the Civil Rights movement and worked to build the Great Society. Since then he has written about the many places he has lived and visited - the people, the landscape, the stories, the hidden history, often illuminated by his Catholic faith. You will find all these things in this book. John Knoepfle is the author of twenty-one books. His poetry has been published in many magazines and anthologies. His most recent works, Walking in Snow, a book of poems and I Look Around for My Life, an autobiography, were published in 2008 by Pearn and Associates. Knoepfle is professor emeritus of literature at the University of Illinois-Springfield. His awards include fellowships from the Rockefeller Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts; as well as the Mark Twain Award for Contributions to Midwestern Literature from the Society for the Study of Midwestern Literature; Author of the Year Award from the Illinois Association of Teachers of English; and the Literary Heritage Award from the Illinois Center for the Book. He lives in Springfield, Illinois, with his wife Peggy. More information can be found on his website: johnknoepfle.com.

Book Daytime and Starlight

    Book Details:
  • Author : James Applewhite
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 1997
  • ISBN : 9780807121498
  • Pages : 56 pages

Download or read book Daytime and Starlight written by James Applewhite and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In this powerful collection, James Applewhite searches the world, from the back roads of his own American Southeast to the antiquities of Europe, for an expanded awareness of history. Time itself, these poems seem to say, is wholeness, the communion of generations, and it is in history, whether of the world, community, or our own families, that we find the locus of our common yearnings." "Lucid, conversational, and utterly compelling, Daytime and Starlight presents through an array of perspectives the ephemera of memory - comic strips, love letters, newsreels, popular music, Greek and Roman statuary - and juxtaposes them with a flawless instinct for the telling detail against contemporary notions of evolution and cosmology. A half-remembered chiaroscuro of Burt Lancaster and Deborah Kerr on the beach, the haunting familiarity of figures in a Renaissance tapestry, the vision of air "green with evening" - in such brief suspensions of time, love and beauty balance regret and loss. Time and again, in poem after poem, Applewhite strikes a clear, bell-like tone of affirmation: "We're all in this together.""--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Although Not Recognized In His Times, His Popularity Has Increased With The Passing Of Years And Today His Poems Are Held In High Esteem. His Concept Of Poetry And Poetic Diction Distinguished Him From His Contemporary Victorian Poets. He Has Been Held By Many As Belonging More To The Twentieth Century Than The Nineteenth, Owing To His Technical Innovation And Intense Style. In His Poetry, The Rhythm Of The Verse Has Been Perfectly Fused With The Flow And Varying Emphasis Of Spoken Language. In Fact, Hopkins Skilfully United The Rhythmical Freedom Of The Middle Ages, The Religious Intensity Of The Early Seventeenth Century, The Response To Nature Of The Early Nineteenth, And He Envisioned The Twentieth Century In Challenging Conventional Encumbrances In Poetic Form. The Present Book Makes An In-Depth Study Of All The Aspects Of Poetic Art Of Hopkins. Since Hopkins Poems Have Been Considered By Many Students Of English Literature As Difficult To Analyse, The Book Aims At Providing A Complete Analytic Exposition Of His Major Works So As To Induce Interest In Readers By Enabling Them To Have An Easy Understanding Of His Poetic Style And Works. Beginning With A Biographical Sketch Of The Poet, The Book Elucidates His Theory Of Poetry. His Concepts Of Inscape , Instress , And Sprung Rhythm Have Been Much Discussed. Book Aerial Concave Without Cloud

Download or read book Aerial Concave Without Cloud written by Sueyeun Juliette Lee and published by . This book was released on 2022-02-22 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A collection of poems about starlight, survival, resilience, and acceptance after experiences of profound grief. Steeped in the bluest apocalypse light of solar collapse and the pale, ghostly light of personal devastation and grief, Aerial Concave Without Cloud rests in the light of human mortality. Through a combination of academic research and the salp'uri dance form, Sueyeun Juliette Lee channels and interprets the language of starlight through her body and into poetic form. In doing so, Lee discovers that resilience is not an attitude or posture, but a way of listening. Through deep conversation with this primary element, Lee finds the human fundamental inside herself.

  • ISBN : 3319198785
  • Pages : 214 pages

Book excerpt: In this updated second edition renowned amateur comet-searcher David H. Levy expands on his work about the intricate relationship between the night sky and the works of English Literature. This revised and expanded text includes new sections on Alfred Lord Tennyson and Gerald Manley Hopkins (both amateur astronomers), extending the time period analyzed in the first edition from early modern literature to encompass the Victorian age. Although the sky enters into much of literature through the ages, British authors offer an especially fertile connection to the heavens, and Levy links the works of seminal authors from Shakespeare on to specific celestial events and scientific advances. From the impact of comets and supernovae to eclipses, Levy’s ultimate goal in this book is to inspire his readers to do the same thing as their ancestors did so long ago—look up and appreciate the stars. His insights in this revised book spread farther and wider than ever before in this learned and enchanting tour of the skies.
