This book was released on 2016-10-07 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Student's Study-Guide in Ancient History: A Combination of Outlines, Map Work and Questions to Aid in Visualizing, Understanding and Remembering the Important Facts of Ancient History, and in Grasping a Sense of the Modern World's Debt to the Peoples of Ancient Times The book contains thirty-seven outline maps. These the student should use to fix the historical geography of Ancient History. Map work of this sort is demanded today. It will help fix the subject in a way which cannot possibly be done even by continual reference to the maps in the textbook. It aids greatly in quickly fixing the spelling of the many unfamiliar names which the student encounters, creates a more vivid picture of the geography of Ancient History, and gives a clearer understanding of causes than could otherwise be gained. Side by side with the maps are questions which rivet attention upon the essentials - the leading men and the political, commercial and intellectual growth of the various periods. These questions are based on the outline given in the early part of the book. To answer them the student must read. Book excerpt: A page-turning novel that is also an exploration of the great philosophical concepts of Western thought, Jostein Gaarder's Sophie's World has fired the imagination of readers all over the world, with more than twenty million copies in print. One day fourteen-year-old Sophie Amundsen comes home from school to find in her mailbox two notes, with one question on each: "Who are you?" and "Where does the world come from?" From that irresistible beginning, Sophie becomes obsessed with questions that take her far beyond what she knows of her Norwegian village. Through those letters, she enrolls in a kind of correspondence course, covering Socrates to Sartre, with a mysterious philosopher, while receiving letters addressed to another girl. Who is Hilde? And why does her mail keep turning up? To unravel this riddle, Sophie must use the philosophy she is learning—but the truth turns out to be far more complicated than she could have imagined.

Book Ancient History Literature and Art

Download or read book Ancient History Literature and Art written by Julia Harris Bentley and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-17 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ancient History, Literature and Art: Topically Arranged With References Embracing a Geographical Method of Memorizing History This work is designed for the use of teachers, schools, families and literary circles. Its obje?t is to enable the student to acquire a knowledge of history with less study than is required by the regular text-book method. While the principles of the map are neither new nor original, it has been simplified in details and plan which adapts it to general use. The object of the topical method is to give prominence to important names and events, to emphasize and impress upon the memory what is most essential and avoid unnecessary detail. The object of the reference system is the study of a subject from the standpoint of different authors, without the loss of time usually required in searching for references. In the selection of references, care has been taken to give the best authorities usually found in public and private libraries. In the paging of the references errors may be found, and in some cases the references may not cover the whole subject as lettered, but are given with that object in view. An alphabetical list of books referred to in the work, with the year of their publication and name of publisher, is given in the appendix. References in the work are only expected to correspond to the year of the publication as given in the catalogue. The purpose of the map is to hold the threads of history continuous by the aid of the eye without taxing the memory, as illustrated in the study of geography by the aid of maps. The map study in this work is practically the same, the centuries taking the phice of countries, persons and events of history answering to important places in geographical study. The topics and their subdivisions are arranged with a view to the main points of history and their historical sequence, tracing the progress of civilization, through the influence of religion, politics, literature and art; special attention being given to the rise, decline and fall of nations and causes therefor. The system is very elastic and may be condensed or expanded, according to the time at the students disposal, or a choice of subject, history, art or literature may be pursued. As an outline of chronology the work is valuable as a ready reference. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
