Book Presence of Non native Vascular Flora in Prince Edward Island s Remnant Acadian Forest

Download or read book Presence of Non native Vascular Flora in Prince Edward Island s Remnant Acadian Forest written by Kathryn (Kate) E. MacQuarrie and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The upland hardwood component of Prince Edward Island's Acadian forest is among the best remaining examples of PEI's pre-colonial landscape, but there has been no assessment of the presence of exotic species in these areas. Three 300 metre long edge to interior transects were established in each of six Acadian forest study areas. Nine 100 m2 circular plots were sampled along each transect at distances from 5.7 to 300 metres; one external plot was established at each transect to sample species in adjacent (non forest) habitats. In each plot, all vascular plants were identified, a visual estimate of percent cover was made, and soil temperature, canopy cover and tree diameters were measured. The results show that there is an edge-to-interior plant community gradient within these forests, and suggest that interior conditions are not reached until a distance of more than 120 metres from an edge. (Abstract shortened by UMI.).

Book Revisiting Seal Harbor and Acadia National Park

Download or read book Revisiting Seal Harbor and Acadia National Park written by Lydia Vandenbergh and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 1997-06-01 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seal Harbor and Acadia National Park are areas rich with history and natural beauty. Several hundred photographs, taken by Seal Harbor's original residents, inspired this pictorial history of the well-known resort and surrounding Acadia National Park. A perusal through Revisiting Seal Harbor and Acadia National Park will reveal to the reader the natural beauty of the area, through views that attracted the early rusticators and created such dedication from the island's summer and winter residents, that Acadia National Park was born. The pages within trace the community's history, from its humble beginnings as a small fishing hamlet, through its metamorphosis into a Victorian-era summer resort, and on through the park's development, an economic boon for the island's residents. From images of a time filled with sweeping Victorian dresses, grand yachts, and wildwood hikes, to accounts of the area's prosperity in the 1910s and 1920s-when the area became synonymous with the Rockefeller and Ford names-Revisiting Seal Harbor and Acadia National Park invites the reader to take a lingering look into the lives of the early islanders and summer visitors.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The beautiful carriage roads of Mount Desert Island, Maine, and Acadia National Park fit so perfectly into the land it seems as though they have always been there. Actually, they are the result of decades of planning and painstaking effort. Although philanthropist John D. Rockefeller, Jr., planned them, the roads were built by Mount Desert Islanders over a twenty-seven-year period. Constructed of native materials and landscaped for a natural effect, the carriage roads are not accessible by car, so they remain a boon to walkers, horseback riders, bicyclists, and cross-country skiers. In this fascinating history, Ann Roberts, the grand-daughter of John D. Rockefeller, Jr., recounts the story of the carriage roads and of a man ahead of his time. This second edition also includes excerpts from an interview with David Rockefeller, son of JDR, Jr., and a detailed history of the roads' restoration following decades of neglect. Curving gracefully across the island's dramatic landscape, Acadia's carriage roads form a network of trails unequaled in the National Park System. Book jacket.
