Book A Spiritual Journey Through Poetry with Marion Woods

Download or read book A Spiritual Journey Through Poetry with Marion Woods written by Marion Woods and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2009-07 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Maybe once or twice in our lives, God grants us the high honor of meeting someone special-someone who walks so closely with Christ that -for the moment-we are sure that we are walking and talking with our Savior. That is what happened when many years ago God allowed my path to cross that of Marion Woods. From that first encounter, like so many others, I knew that Marion was someone very special. His love of God, his passion and compassion for God's children were so clearly evident and contagious. From then on, I have treasured each moment God has given us together. I urge our mission team members to "lean in close" to drink in every word Marion has to share with us. Likewise, I spend every free moment sitting as close as I can-drinking in every bit of wisdom, every ounce of inspiration and every drop of laughter. God grants us these rare gems only so often and I thank God for the gift of Marion Woods. Pull up a chair, sip a cup of Costa Rican coffee and be prepared to feel God's presence as Marion takes you on a walk with the Savior. Rev. Jimmy Towson Metter, Ga.- FUMC

Book Woody Allen s Angst

Download or read book Woody Allen s Angst written by Sander H. Lee and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-05-07 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While Woody Allen is generally considered to be a master of the comic genre he created, his serious films are very important in understanding his role as one of this generation's more influential filmmakers. In this work such Allen films as Annie Hall (1977), Broadway Danny Rose (1984), Crimes and Misdemeanors (1989) and Mighty Aphrodite (1995) are analyzed for the common philosophical themes they share. Gender issues, Allen's love-hate relationship with God, narcissism and moral relativism, and the use of the so-called existential dilemma are among the topics discussed. The extensive research is augmented with a rare interview with Allen.

Book Eighteen Woody Allen Films Analyzed

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new textbook is an abridgment of the author's earlier Woody Allen's Angst: Philosophical Commentaries on His Serious Films (McFarland, 1997; "invaluable"--Choice.) Five main topics are explored: the desire of many of his characters to ground their lives in traditional ethical values despite their realization that such values may no longer be certain; the opposition between pessimism and optimism throughout his films; gender issues relating to romantic love, sexual desire and the ongoing changes in our cultural expectations of both men and women; the idea that contemporary American society is rapidly descending into barbarism precisely because of societal failure to maintain a sense of individual moral responsibility; and a critique of psychoanalysis as a method for understanding human behavior. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Thanks, I've got this." That's what we say when we find out we are born with the gift of free will. And we journey on through the dark woods. We learn, grow, try, look for light, and rest in a clearing in the woods to catch our breath. We get up again to journey on until we come face to face with the epiphany that is revealed as its own gift... breath, breath enough to live one day at a time grateful for the gift. It is here that we come to an understanding to find that we are not alone. After the death of my mother in 1986, I began to write out the voice of my private heart in poems that mark time and hold the essence of my proof of life. After more than 30 years of writing through life, the act of collecting these poems and fieldnotes into a book has revealed a spiritual legacy filled with common things such as a longing for love, a perpetual return to original love, and a commitment to long-term love relationships. In all chapters of living that call us body and soul, Nature, Love, and The Mystery mentor our spirit that turns to answer the whisper of the seasons and the wind. Along the way, a soundtrack in a universal language connects us, reveals us, and gathers us in... laughter, sighs, weeping, scripture, music, song lyrics, hymn lyrics, stories, and poetry. Perhaps one poem or this book in full will speak into your own memories, longings for love, spiritual revolts, and emotions ranging from joy and sorrow to awe and you will hear the "voice" of this silent witness as you seek the essence of your own proof of life. Journey on. Rest in a clearing in the woods. Breathe in and out. Enjoy. Endure. Emerge. Repeat. Enjoy...

Book excerpt: Medieval Welsh Pilgrimage, c.1100–1500 examines one of the most popular expressions of religious belief in medieval Europe—from the promotion of particular sites for political, religious, and financial reasons to the experience of pilgrims and their impact on the Welsh landscape. Addressing a major gap in Welsh Studies, Kathryn Hurlock peels back the historical and religious layers of these holy pilgrimage sites to explore what motivated pilgrims to visit these particular sites, how family and locality drove the development of certain destinations, what pilgrims expected from their experience, how they engaged with pilgrimage in person or virtually, and what they saw, smelled, heard, and did when they reached their ultimate goal.

Download or read book Long Life written by Mary Oliver and published by Da Capo Press. This book was released on 2005-03-02 with total page 119 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The gift of Oliver's poetry is that she communicates the beauty she finds in the world and makes it unforgettable" ( Miami Herald ). This has never been truer than in Long Life, a luminous collection of seventeen essays and ten poems. With the grace and precision that are the hallmarks of her work, Oliver shows us how writing "is a way of offering praise to the world" and suggests we see her poems as "little alleluias." Whether describing a goosefish stranded at low tide, the feeling of being baptized by the mist from a whale's blowhole, or the "connection between soul and landscape," Oliver invites readers to find themselves and their experiences at the center of her world. In Long Life she also speaks of poets and writers: Wordsworth's "whirlwind" of "beauty and strangeness"; Hawthorne's "sweet-tempered" side; and Emerson's belief that "a man's inclination, once awakened to it, would be to turn all the heavy sails of his life to a moral purpose." With consummate craftsmanship, Mary Oliver has created a breathtaking volume sure to add to her reputation as "one of our very best poets" (New York Times Book Review ).

Book There Is No Road Through the Woods and Only the Keeper Sees

Download or read book There Is No Road Through the Woods and Only the Keeper Sees written by Salvatore Poeta and published by . This book was released on 2014-10-17 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is No Road through the Woods and Only the Keeper Sees represents a continuation of the journey I began by sea on the other side of the Atlantic as I retrace, nostalgically, the footsteps of my childhood and teenage years on North American soil. It is a reflection on friends and strangers--human and animal--lost, some forever, deep within time's bottomless wells, on the trials and tribulations of a lost innocence tinged with the melancholia of promises not kept and irreversible regrets. It also embodies the spiritual journey of a soul continually searching, not for fear of death or personal salvation, for that glimmer of light leading us toward the warm embrace of human truth, kindness, and respect, of all that binds us and envelops us in a brotherly love while each of us pursues our destined journey in this world and the next.

Book Shakespeare s Unreformed Fictions

Download or read book Shakespeare s Unreformed Fictions written by Gillian Woods and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2013-06-20 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why does Catholicism have such an imaginative hold on Shakespearean drama, even though the on-going Reformation outlawed its practice? Shakespeare's Unreformed Fictions contends that the answers to this question are theatrical rather than strictly theological. Avoiding biographical speculation, this book concentrates on dramatic impact, and thoroughly integrates new literary analysis with fresh historical research. In exploring the dramaturgical variety of the 'Catholic' content of Shakespeare's plays, Gillian Woods argues that habits, idioms, images, and ideas lose their denominational clarity when translated into dramatic fiction: they are awkwardly 'unreformed' rather than doctrinally Catholic. Providing nuanced readings of generically diverse plays, this book emphasises the creative function of such unreformed material, which Shakespeare uses to pose questions about the relationship between self and other. A wealth of contextual evidence is studied, including catechisms, homilies, religious polemics, news quartos, and non-Shakespearean drama, to highlight how early modern Catholicism variously provoked nostalgia, faith, conversion, humour, fear, and hatred. This book argues that Shakespeare exploits these contradictory attitudes to frame ethical problems, creating fictional plays that consciously engage audiences in the difficult leaps of faith required by both theatre and theology. By recognizing the playfulness of Shakespeare's unreformed fictions, this book offers a different perspective on the interactions between post-Reformation religion and the theatre, and an alternative angle on Shakespeare's interrogation of the scope of dramatic fiction.
