Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A detailed look at a genre that combines virtuoso printmaking techniques, sophisticated imagery, and engaging, playful poetry This beautiful volume celebrates the tradition of the Japanese surimono print. Produced from around 1800 until 1840, during the Edo period, surimono (“printed things” in Japanese) combine intricate artwork and playful poetry, and their small print runs and exclusive audiences allowed for lavish yet subtle surface treatments, such as embossing and gilding. Enjoyed for their learned allusions to literature and contemporary culture, surimono continue to delight and perplex scholars with their visual puns and wordplay. Imagery ranges from delicate, domestic still lifes to spirited vignettes of the natural world, while the poems are often lighthearted takes on the classical Japanese waka form. With its rich text and scholarly apparatus—including names and titles in kanji characters as well as transliterations and translations of the poems on the catalogued prints—The Private World of Surimono serves as a critical resource for scholars of Japanese art and history and offers general readers insight into this rare and innovative print form.

Hunter, Esq., Of New York: Including as Well All of Mr. Hunter's Japanese Collections, Japanese Books, Japanese Ivories, Which Have Been Exhibited at the Metropolitan Museum and English Books on Japan With His Catalogues and Books of Reference on Japanese Prints The admiration for Japanese Ukiyoye prints in Europe and America awakened the impulse of native ar-t among the Japanese themselves, Who are now paying formidable prices when the resources of this long unap prec-i-ated art among them are nearly exhausted. It is impossible to expect now a days that prints of great merit can come from Japan. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Rare and Valuable Japanese Color Prints from Three Different Collections

Download or read book Rare and Valuable Japanese Color Prints from Three Different Collections written by Anderson Galleries and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-26 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rare and Valuable Japanese Color Prints From Three Different Collections: Rare and Beautiful Examples of the Primitives, Excellent Examples of Harunobu, Koriusai, Kiyonaga, and Utamaro, Including Fine Triptychs, an Unusually Important Series of Landscapes by Hokusai and Hiroshige A series of about thirty Chinese color prints may, however, deserve a word of comment. We have all seen Chinese color prints that are in reality hasty reprints of the chieh-tse-yuan hua-chuan or Treatise on Painting from the Mustard Seed Garden, printed in Japan towards 1812, or printed in China about 1890 and 1906. Color and lines of these worthless reprints are equally lacking in character, and give no more idea of the charm and quality of the old prints than an oleograph sold in the country fair gives an idea of the Sistine Madonna. The early Chinese color prints have never been offered in this country and have escaped everybody's vigilance. Only Mr. Langdon Warner, in Philadelphia, treasures an early edition of another Chinese book With color prints, the shi-chu-chai-shu Hua or Register of the Ten Bamboo Hall in Word and Picture and the Far Eastern department of the Metropolitan Museum of Art possesses several of the early prints and also a stone printing slab Which, in my opinion, has been used for color printing.
