Download or read book A Sketch of the Life of Okah Tubbee written by Laah Ceil Manatoi Elaah Tubbee and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Sketch of the Life of Okah Tubbee, published in 1852, begins with testimonials regarding Okah Tubbee's flute-playing abilities and with a lightly edited version of Lewis Allen's "Essay Upon the Indian Character" from the earlier edition of Tubbee's narrative, as well as the so-called Indian Covenant "between the Six Nations and the Choctaws." Tubbee's narrative begins with brief recollections of his father and Tubbee's childhood with his "unnatural mother." Tubbee's visit to Choctaw Indians in Alexandria is described before his apprenticeship to the cruel blacksmith Mr. Russell, and his subsequent apprenticeship to Dr. A.P. Merrill, leading to his desire to become an "Indian Doctor." Tubbee's details his travels and voyages by steamboat, first as a musician with the Louisiana Volunteers and later on his own. Towards the end of his narrative, Tubbee expresses a desire to let his wife, Laah Ceil, speak for herself. In this final, additional section, Laah Ceil describes her birth, her education, her Christian convictions, and the manner in which she met and married Tubbee. She also recounts their travels together and their advocacy "in behalf of the Indians" and against forced relocation. The Sketch concludes with an original poem by Laah Ceil and a collection of letters, documents, and vouchers attesting to Okah Tubbee's identity and his medical skill.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Sketch of the Life of Okah Tubbee, Alias, William Chubbee, Son of the Head Chief, Mosholeh Tubbee, of the Choctaw Nation of Indians IN contemplating the Indian character, there is an interest thrown around it, which cannot fail to impress the mind of every inquiring person. Although the Indian race is fading away, their palmy days being gone, yet there is a charm thrown around their past history, and the most lively emotions are created in the mind of the patriot and philanthropist in contemplating their past and present history, and we are led to look upon the high and lofty bearing of the red man with the most intense admiration. There was a period in the history of the aborig ines of North America, when they reigned as supreme lords over this vast continent. The Yonkoo tribe, which means lit erally conqueror, had undisputed sway over the New England country. The term Yankee comes from the tribe of Indians styled Yonkoo. The English conquered them after a long and bloody contest; when blood had flown in crimson currents, and the shrieks of many an innocent and massacred female rent the air, and the red man's tomahawk was wreaking in the blood of its victim, and when they were subdued, the war chief, a proud and noble fellow, stepped forth and presented his tom ahawk to the oflicer in command of the English forces, saying, 'me yonkoo, ' or conqueror, but now you yonkoo.' Hence the term has been twisted about until it has become yankee. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Thrilling Sketch of the Life of the Distinguished Chief Okah Tubbee: Alias, Wm; Chubbee, Son of the Head Chief, Mosholeh Tubbee of the Choctaw Nation of Indians It is difficult to arrive at a correct conclusion as to the origin of the Indian race; it is supposed by historians sacred and pro. Fans, ancient and modern, that all the races which have been, and are now upon the earth are derived from Noah, that from Shem, Ham and Japheth sprang whtte, red, and black men, and from them the great variety of nations, kindreds and tongues. Some suppose that the Indians are descended from some of the lost tribes of Jews, that they pursued a northern course as far as Behrring Straits and constructed some kind of floating raft, and crossed over where it is only about nineteen miles to one Island, and about nineteen to another, and took possession ot the country before it was discovered by Americus Vespucius, or Christopher Columbus indeed, there is strong evidence to sup= port this View, from tradition, and a similarity of features.
