Book Design of Shape Memory Alloy SMA Actuators

Download or read book Design of Shape Memory Alloy SMA Actuators written by Ashwin Rao and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-05-08 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This short monograph presents an analysis and design methodology for shape memory alloy (SMA) components such as wires, beams, and springs for different applications. The solid-solid, diffusionless phase transformations in thermally responsive SMA allows them to demonstrate unique characteristics like superelasticity and shape memory effects. The combined sensing and actuating capabilities of such materials allows them to provide a system level response by combining multiple functions in a single material system. In SMA, the combined mechanical and thermal loading effects influence the functionality of such materials. The aim of this book is to make the analysis of these materials accessible to designers by developing a "strength of materials" approach to the analysis and design of such SMA components inspired from their various applications with a review of various factors influencing the design process for such materials.

This book was released on 2013-10-09 with total page 1617 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the week of June 29 - July 5, 2008, over 300 scientists and engineers from 30 countries spanning five continents converged at the historic La Fonda Hotel in the city of Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA to participate in the 12th International Conference on Martensitic Transformations (ICOMAT-08) to fathom the peculiar world of certain crystalline materials that undergo structural change when cooled or stressed. Many of these materials can restore their original shape when reheated, thus the name "Shape Memory Alloys". In the spirit of Santa Fe, a central theme of ICOMAT-08 was INTEGRATION across many dimensions.

Book position control with magnetic shape memory actuators

Download or read book position control with magnetic shape memory actuators written by Leonardo Riccardi and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2012-02-26 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Magnetic shape memory alloys are promising materials for several applications, such as positioning systems. This book presents the main features of those materials, and then addresses the problem of controlling magnetic shape memory positioning actuators. Two control approaches are introduced, namely a PID control and an adaptive control based on adaptive hysteresis compensation. They are able to handle the presence of hysteresis in the input-output characteristic. The adaptive approach also handles the temperature-dependent behaviour of the nonlinearity. Experimental results performed on several actuator prototypes demonstrate the effectiveness of the control approaches presented here.
