Book excerpt: “Unlike liturgical manuals of the past, which were intended specifically for the use of the clergy, this book is directed to a wider audience—to members of parish worship committees, priests, organists and directors of music, lectors, deacons, cantors and other singers, bishops, altar guild members, acolytes—in short, to all who bear responsability for the planning and conduct of public worship.” —from the Preface So begins Howard Galley’s classic guide to the Eucharistic liturgy, The Ceremonies of the Eucharist. Galley opens his formidable liturgical learning and veteran ecclesial experience for all worshippers to access. Throughout, he enhances his suggestions for practice with “the rationale and historical background” for his recommendations.

Book The Latin Mass Explained

Download or read book The Latin Mass Explained written by George J. Moorman and published by . This book was released on 2020-02-24 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Facsimile of 1920 Edition. Originally published with the title: The Mass: The Eucharistic Service of the Catholic Church... The term "Latin Mass" is frequently used to denote the Tridentine Mass, that is, the Roman Rite liturgy of the Mass celebrated in Latin and in accordance with the successive editions of the Roman Missal published between 1570 and 1962. Neither the Second Vatican Council nor the subsequent revision of the Roman Missal abolished Latin as the liturgical language of the Roman Rite: the official text of the Roman Missal, on which translations into vernacular languages are to be based, continues to be in Latin, and Latin can still be used in the celebration. The author attempts to explain the rituals and symbolism of the Latin Mass in part to explain its mysteries and also to encourage participation. "The Latin Mass Explained made the Traditional Latin Mass really come alive for me. This book helps me tremendously when I explain my love for the Tridentine Mass to both Catholics and non-Catholics. It also helped me impart this love and understanding to my 10-year-old son, who now serves the Latin Mass." --M. Pluta "This book is ideal for priests and lay people who want to learn how to pray the traditional Latin Mass, now called the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite." --Rev. Kenneth Baker, S.J. Homiletic and Pastoral Review "This is a must read for any Catholic especially for those who want to understand the Rite of St. Gregory the Great.....or the Extraordinary Form of the Holy Mass. Classic book, read it, study it, read it again, study it again...and keep for reference." Amazon Reader

Download or read book The Ordinary of the Mass written by Arthur Devine and published by Createspace Independent Pub. This book was released on 2013-06-06 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Sacrifice of the Mass is the Sacrifice of the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ, really present on the altar under the appearances of bread and wine, and offered to God for the living and the dead. It is one and the same sacrifice as that of the Cross, as in it the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ are offered to God, to give Him supreme honour and glory, to thank Him for all His benefits, to obtain pardon for our sins, and to obtain all other graces and blessings. There are many ways of hearing Mass given by spiritual writers and contained in our manuals of devotion; of these, one may be singled out as the most instructive, the most devotional, and the most profitable, and that is to follow the Ordinary of the Mass, to say the prayers with the priest, and to meditate on the mysteries signified by the ceremonies and rites prescribed for the celebration of Mass. To do this well it is necessary to be instructed in these prayers and ceremonies, and for this purpose the explanations contained in this book have been undertaken, and are now published. The object of the work may therefore be said to be to promote and renew the faith in and the devotion of the faithful to the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass by the explanation of its prayers and ceremonies. The plan adopted for the work is simple and clear: (1) The text of the Ordinary of the Mass is given in Latin and English. (2) Explanatory notes are subjoined, divided into historical, liturgical, and exegetical; and no one need suppose that these terms imply that the work is either learned or critical, and this the reader will soon perceive. The term exegetical was selected for the purpose of including under oneheading both the literal and mystical sense of the prayers and ceremonies., (3) After treating of the Ordinary of the Mass, four sections are devoted to the explanation of the prayers and the principal ceremonies peculiar to Solemn High Mass. (4) A final chapter is given in explanation of the ceremonies prescribed for Exposition and Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament. The Church speaks to her children not only by her authoritative decrees and dogmatical definitions, but and by her rites and ceremonies, in which the wisdom and piety of the early Fathers are embodied with the teachings of faith. These may be said to be the voice and language of the Church in every age from the foundation of Christianity. Because the prayers and ceremonies of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass are the source of much useful instruction, both theoretical and practical, all priests regard it as a duty of love and of their pastoral office to interest their flocks in the Sacred Liturgy, and to make them esteem its doctrine and its moral lessons. The symbolism of the sacred rites and the doctrine of the holy formulas are calculated to nourish spiritually the souls of the faithful with the hidden manna contained in their language and in the mysteries which they signify. "Then these are well understood attendance at the Holy Sacrifice can never be without good practical results, faith will be more lively, prayer more fervent, and the supernatural life revived and increased in the souls of the faithful. No one can say what a loss it is to many holy souls who hear Mass daily to be left in ignorance of the meaning of the liturgical rites and unacquainted with the beautiful prayers of the Ordinary of the Mass.

Download or read book Ceremonies of the Modern Roman Rite written by Peter J. Elliott and published by Ignatius Press. This book was released on 2011-06-21 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At last, a complete ceremonial manual for the celebration of the Eucharist and the Liturgy of the Hours. Faithful to the renewal of worship authorized by the Second Vatican Council, Ceremonies combines precise guidance to these rites with a pastoral and spiritual approach. A high ideal of noble Catholic worship is consistently maintained, respecting the "continuity of our tradition". Ceremonies sets out the liturgical duties of bishops, priests and deacons, acolytes and servers, lectors and eucharistic ministers etc., hence it is invaluable for clergy and seminarians and all who teach or study the liturgy. Ceremonies includes a wide range of guidance on such useful themes as: vessels and vestments, how to carry out ceremonial actions, the deacon, ministering the Eucharist to the sick, children's liturgy, Eucharistic adoration, Eucharistic processions, celebrating vespers in a parish, eucharistic ministries and the laity, the location of the tabernacle, etc. However, Ceremonies is primarily a book to be used; a practical manual for clergy, MC's, sacristans, liturgical committees and all planning worship in parishes. "Ceremonies is a timely work. It corrects mistaken interpretations with precise guidance and reasoned arguments. It also provides rapid access to official sources." -Msgr. Peter Elliott
