Book excerpt: The 18th century was a wealth of knowledge, exploration and rapidly growing technology and expanding record-keeping made possible by advances in the printing press. In its determination to preserve the century of revolution, Gale initiated a revolution of its own: digitization of epic proportions to preserve these invaluable works in the largest archive of its kind. Now for the first time these high-quality digital copies of original 18th century manuscripts are available in print, making them highly accessible to libraries, undergraduate students, and independent scholars. The Age of Enlightenment profoundly enriched religious and philosophical understanding and continues to influence present-day thinking. Works collected here include masterpieces by David Hume, Immanuel Kant, and Jean-Jacques Rousseau, as well as religious sermons and moral debates on the issues of the day, such as the slave trade. The Age of Reason saw conflict between Protestantism and Catholicism transformed into one between faith and logic -- a debate that continues in the twenty-first century. ++++ The below data was compiled from various identification fields in the bibliographic record of this title. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Sermon, Preached Before the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company, in Boston, June 1, 1795: Being the Anniversary of Their Election of Officers In all our reflections on this administration of the universe, we ought to entertain a full persuasion, that he permits nothing unfit to be permitted, and effects nothing unfit to be effected; that he connects and regulates events, apparently most disconnected and irregular and so over-rules and disposes them, that confusion issues in order, tumult in tranquillity, and suffering in enjoyment. By which a perpetual and devout acknowledgment of the Supreme Being in all that takes place, we show a becoming sense of his authority, and learn his nature and perfections, the rules of his government, and the duty and interest of his rational offspring. Our hearts are impressed with reverence and humility, and expanded with admiration and joy. The murmurs of discontent are hushed; the alarms of fear are quieted; the gloom, which often gathers over this disordered late, is dispersed; and lustre is shed upon the face of the world. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Sermon, Preached Before the Ancient and Honourable Artillery Company, in Boston, June 6, 1796: Being the Anniversary of Their Election of Officers Cation, this truth of our text is eflablilhed. The whole paragraph contains an appeal* of a man to his neighbours, or an inquiry which may be thus repre fented. Indeed, fhould I have no uncommon natural powers; or {hould I not have cultivated my under fianding; fhould I not have been a man of deep re flection, or ihould I not have the fecrets of infpira tion; tell me, whence could I get wifdom? Ami firlt to comprehend all creation? Who hath done this? Who hath afcended into heaven, or who hath defcended? Who hath gathered the winds in his hand, or confined the waters in his garment Who hath eftablifhed all parts of the earth What is the name of this man, or what is his fon's name? Can any man tell Is not every truth of God approved, when it has been fafe to thofe who trufl in it Add thou not then rafhly to his words afiirm only from experi ence left thy folly be expofed, and thou lead other men into errour. He then proceeds to his conclufion. He had confidered affluence, and poverty, and had devoutly obferved how far they contribute ufually to happinefs, and he tells us, that experience and obfer vation had reconciled his mind to the nature of hu man life, and had taught him to acquiefce in thofe moderate defires, which are much more adapted to health, and contentment, and have their objects com monly within every man's reach. Experience has continued to decide in favour of this choice, and to render it happy. Our text then afi'ures us that the laws of God are known from experience, and from the fafety and happinefs men find in them that every advantage beyond pail experience, fhould be purfued with the greateft caution; that attempts at higher.
