Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of the Shunammite Woman is based on the Old Testament scriptures 2 Kings 4:8-37 and 2 Kings 8:1-6. She is described as a great woman. She shows hospitality to the prophet Elisha and his servant, Gehazi as they pass through her village of Shunem on their way to Mt. Carmel. The Bible reveals that her husband is old and they have no children. When Elisha wants to reward her for the kindness she has shown to him, she asks nothing in payment. Her answer is simply, "I dwell among mine own people." Gehazi reveals to Elisha that her husband is old and she has no child. Elisha tells her she will have a son. The biblical account covers the birth of a son at the appointed time and later the son dies, apparently from a sun stroke. Elisha raises him from the dead. A famine is prophesied by Elisha and he tells her to leave until the seven years of famine is over. She chooses to go to the land of the Philistines. The fictional elements of the story cover how she meets her future husband at a market in Sidon which leads up to the account found in the Bible. Her seven years in the land of the Philistines involves another fictional account where she meets their king. While there she gives the king and the farmers the benefit of her crop planting experience and the Philistines farmland flourishes as a result. After the famine is over, she journeys back to Shunem and finds her house is occupied. King Joram restores her house and land, thus ending this story with the account in the Bible.

This is the question undergirding this work, which considers a selection of biblical texts in which women have significant roles. Employing both a gender and a postcolonial lens, it asks sharp questions both of the interests embedded in the texts themselves and of their impact upon contemporary women readers. Whereas most postcolonial studies have been undertaken from the perspective of the colonized this work reads the texts from the position of a settler descendant, and is an attempt to engage with the disquietening and challenging questions that reading from such a location raises. Letters from early settler women in New Zealand, contemporary fiction, and personal reminiscence become tools for the task, complementing those traditionally employed in critical biblical readings.

Early rabbinical and inner-biblical interpretations suggest that juxtaposition was an intentional device used by biblical editors and authors to shape the meaning of their material. Therefore, this monograph develops a framework for recognising the ways in which adjacent units interpret and re-interpret one another and presents this framework as an important hermeneutical tool. Stories and episodes that are linked chronologically affect one another through a relationship of causes and consequences. The categories of contradiction, corroboration and question and answer are also used to describe the types of interaction between narrative units and demonstrate how such dialogues create new meaning. Indicators in the text that guide the audience towards the intended interpretation are identified in order that a 'poetics' of juxtaposition is developed. The theoretical basis established in the first half of the monograph is then applied to the Elisha cycle. Each episode is interpreted independently and then read in juxtaposition with the surrounding episodes, producing a fresh literary reading of the cycle. Furthermore, in order to demonstrate how juxtaposition functioned as a diachronic process, attention is given to the literary history of the cycle. We conjecture earlier interpretations of the Elisha episodes and compare them to the final form of the cycle. Finally, the Elisha cycle is itself a story juxtaposed with other stories and so the same principles of interpretation are used to suggest the meaning of the cycle within the book of Kings.
