Book excerpt: BES, the Beijing Spectrometer, began its first groundbreaking physics run, thirty years ago, in 1989. This is the first high energy physics experiment in China, and has been unique throughout the world for its thorough and extended coverage of the tau and charm energy region. Since then, the BES detector has undergone steady improvements, upgrading to BESII in 1998 and to BESIII in 2008. Over the same period, the collaboration has expanded from 150 members, across 10 institutions in China and the United States, to about 500 members, across 72 institutions and 15 countries. The physics program, too, has extended from light hadron spectroscopy, tau, and charm physics to the discovery of exotic charmonium-like states, precision tests of the Standard Model of particle physics, and searches for new physics beyond the Standard Model.This special volume collects the proceedings of the symposium held at the Institute of High Energy Physics, Beijing, in celebration of the 30-year span of achievements and progress at the BES, BESII, and BESIII experiments. Written by many leaders of the BES collaborations, these proceedings document the early days of the BES experiments, important milestones, and the future physics program at BESIII.

Direct CP violation finally appeared in the form of ε′/ε in the K system. Indirect CP violation in B → J/Ψ Ks decay, the raison d'être for construction of e+e- B factories, was first sniffed out at the proton-antiproton collider. The asymmetric B factories — BABAR at SLAC and BELLE at KEK — were completed, while the symmetric B factory at Cornell was upgraded to CLEO-III. It seems that everyone is positioning himself for the great competition on “B Physics and CP Violation”, racing to unravel the Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix, especially the size and origin of CP phases. The change of millennium provides a dramatic backdrop.To have intensive discussions at the technical level, to create broader interest in the subject, and to maximize interaction between experimenters and theorists, this book starts with the status of B factories: accelerator, detector and physics analysis. Following an overview of B physics and the CKM matrix, it delves into the details of lifetime, spectroscopy and decays, with even more specialized discussions on rare decays, direct and indirect CP violation, factorization and final state interactions, determination of unitarity phases, etc. Topics on ε′/ε, rare K decay, charm and hyperon systems, and various T, CP and CPT tests are also discussed at length. The book closes with the outlook for hadron machines and the prospects for new physics. A special feature is that there are two summary talks, one on experiment and the other on theory. The book is further augmented by two dozen excellent contributed talks.

Some of the reports included in this volume have been contributed by the INFN ELOISATRON working group members. The first. part of these proceedings deals mostly with the presentation and inter pretation of results in t.he so-called fiavour physics sector. New results, which have become available in the last three years from experiments involving kaons, charmed and beauty hadrons, and searches for the still missing top quark at the present and fothcoming colliders are topics of major interest. here. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reports a search for theoretically natural supersymmetry (SUSY) at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The data collected with the ATLAS detector in 2012 corresponding to 20 /fb of an integrated luminosity have been analyzed for stop pair production in proton–proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 8 TeV at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in the scenario of the higgsino-like neutralino. The author focuses on stop decaying into a bottom quark and chargino. In the scenario of the higgsino-like neutralino, the mass difference between charginos and neutralinos (Δm) is expected to be small, and observable final-state particles are likely to have low-momentum (soft). The author develops a dedicated analysis with a soft lepton as a probe of particles from chargino decay, which suppresses the large amount of backgrounds. As a result of the analysis, no significant SUSY signal is observed. The 95% confidence-level exclusion limits are set to masses of stop and neutralino assuming Δm = 20 GeV. The region with ΔM (the mass difference between stop and neutralino) 70 GeV is excluded for the first time at stop mass of less than 210 GeV. The author also excludes the signals with ΔM 120 GeV up to 600 GeV of stop mass with neutralino mass of less than 280 GeV. The author clearly shows very few remaining parameter spaces for light stop (e.g., topology of stop decay is extremely similar to the SM top quark) by combining his results and previous ATLAS analyses. His results provide a strong constraint to searches for new physics in the future.

Book excerpt: The second course of the International School on Physics with Low Energy Antiprotons was held in Erice, Sicily at the Ettore Majorana Centre for Scientific Culture, from May 20 to May 31, 1987. The School is dedicated to physics accessible to experiments using low energy antiprotons, especially in view of operation of the LEAR facility at CERN with the upgraded antiproton source AAC (Antiproton Accumulator AA and Antiproton Collector ACOL). The first course in 1986 covered topics related to fundamental symmetries. This book contains the proceedings of the second course which focused on spectroscopy of light and heavy quarks. These proceedings contain both the tutorial lectures and contri butions presented by participants during the School. The papers are organized in four sections: The first section includes theoretical reviews. Section II contains experimental reviews and covers the results in meson spectroscopy from DM2, MARK III, GAMS and n-WA76. Section III presents the new meson spectroscopy experiments in pre paration at CERN and Fermilab: Crystal Barrel, OBELIX, Jetset and E760. Section IV is dedicated to LEAR and to future facilities where meson spectroscopy would be a principal component of the physics programme. We should like to thank Dr. Alberto Gabriele and the staff of the Ettore Majorana Centre who provided for a smooth running of the School and a very pleasant stay.
