Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Film and television production are important components of the Canadian economy. In Vancouver, popular American television series like The X-Files and Canadian series like Da Vinci's Inquest have boosted the city's profile as a centre for international and domestic productions. Serra Tinic's On Location is the first empirical analysis of regional Canadian television producers in the context of developing global media markets. Tinic observes that global television production in Vancouver has been a contradictory process that has, on one level, led to the homogenization of culturally specific storylines, while simultaneously facilitating the development of new avenues for international ventures. The author explains how federal and regional network considerations, funding guidelines, and partnerships with international co-producers affect the capacity of Canadian television producers to negotiate culturally specific storylines in the development process. She further interrogates the concepts of globalization, culture, and national identity, and their relationship to broadcasting from the perspectives of members of the television industry themselves, highlighting the extent to which industry practices in Vancouver epitomize current trends in global television production. On Location fills a major gap in contemporary media and cultural studies debates that question the connections between the politics of place, culture, and commerce within the larger context of cultural globalization.

Book Documentary Television in Canada

Download or read book Documentary Television in Canada written by David Hogarth and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2002 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the inception of Canadian television in the early 1950s, documentary television, consistently a favourite among viewers, has been misunderstood and often maligned by its critics. More popular, and arguably more innovative, than its cinematic counterpart or than dramatic Canadian television, Canadian documentary television has decisively shaped the form and function of public service television in this country. David Hogarth traces its history back to its roots in radio in the 1930s and 1940s and examines the variety of forms of documentary television that developed in the decades that followed, focusing on newsmagazines, science programs, historical essays, docudramas, and verité investigations. He concludes with a discussion of the recent international success of documentary television as one of Canada's leading cultural exports, examining the effects of globalization and looking forward to the future of this genre. While principally an overview of the last half century and an analysis of current conditions, Documentary Television in Canada also includes detailed analysis of selected programs, such as the For the Record series on schizophrenia, "Warrendale" (by Allan King), "Images of Canada" (by Vincent Tovell), "The Valour and The Horror" episode, "Death by Moonlight" and "Shooting Indians" (by Ali Kazimi) among others.

So, too, have the applications of new technology typically been property of alliances of corporations in the U.S., Europe and Japan ... As the pace of the "globalization" of culture quickens, Canada's broadcasting, recording, film and publishing industries will face formidable challenges. Communications analyst Peter Lyman describes the impact of the new technologies on Canadian cultural industries and proposes strategies he feels must be accepted to make these industries viable in an ever-changing marketplace

Book Change and Continuity

Download or read book Change and Continuity written by Mark P. Thomas and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2019-08-28 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a period characterized by growing social inequality, precarious work, the legacies of settler colonialism, and the emergence of new social movements, Change and Continuity presents innovative interdisciplinary research as a guide to understanding Canada's political economy and a contribution to progressive social change. Assessing the legacy of the Canadian political economy tradition – a broad body of social science research on power, inequality, and change in society – the essays in this volume offer insight into contemporary issues and chart new directions for future study. Chapters from both emerging and established scholars expand the boundaries of Canadian political economy research, seeking new understandings of the forces that shape society, the ensuing conflicts and contradictions, and the potential for social justice. Engaging with interconnected topics that include shifts in immigration policy, labour market restructuring, settler colonialism, the experiences of people with disabilities, and the revitalization of workers' movements, this collection builds upon and deepens critical analysis of Canadian society and considers its application to contexts beyond Canada. The latest in a series of related volumes on Canadian political economy, Change and Continuity explores the past, present, and potential futures of the discipline in a global context, offering insight into some of the most pressing issues of our time.

Book Canada s Cultural Industries

Download or read book Canada s Cultural Industries written by Paul Audley and published by Lorimer. This book was released on 1983 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the back cover: Books, television, records - media such as these provide a country with its entertainment, information, opinion and analysis - a major part of its culture. But the "import" of culture from more powerful countries has always meant disadvantages for Canada's "cultural industries" whose smaller market dictates higher costs. As these industries suffer economically so does Canadian culture ... However, by both their buying habits and responses to polls, Canadians have shown that they support Canadian content. Despite this fact, an annual cultural deficit of $750 million and an obvious threat to Canadian autonomy, responses from government have been fitful and sometimes even counter-productive. For both English and French Canada, Paul Audley provides a wealth of information on the state of the cultural industries; newspapers, magazines, books, recording, radio, television and film. Audley pays particular attention to problems of Canadian content and control, and how government could formulate new policies to strengthen these vital industries.
