Book Review and Analysis of Small scale Aquaculture Production in East Africas

Download or read book Review and Analysis of Small scale Aquaculture Production in East Africas written by Arie Pieter van Duijn and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 43 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes the findings of literature studies and of interviews with fish farmers and key informants in Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda as well as recommended actions that result from the findings. The studies were commissioned by Msingi East Africa in collaboration with Stichting BoP Innovation Centre and have been reported in four separate reports, covering each country. This final report provides a summary of all country reports. Extensive to semi-intensive production of Tilapia and to a lesser extent, African Catfish in small ponds is the most common production system in the region. However, there is a rapidly expanding culture of tilapia production in floating cages taking place in Lake Victoria and in other lakes. The situation of small-scale aquaculture producers as well as support services in the four countries differs but most small-scale fish farmers in the region are confronted with a shortage of essential inputs (especially fish feed, fingerlings and credit) of good quality and affordable price. The level of knowledge about better farm management practices, of related skills and application of more advanced technology (needed to increase productivity and income) is low for most farmers. For most countries the opportunities for the more advanced segment of small-scale farmers to grow are good. The study recommends a number of actions which it is believed will contribute to growth of smallholders’ production and income for all the countries surveyed

Book Lake Victoria Fisheries Resources

Download or read book Lake Victoria Fisheries Resources written by Yunus D. Mgaya and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-11-28 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book synthesises the historical trends of the lake fisheries, the lake ecology, biology and biodiversity, socio-economics, stock assessment, aquaculture, fish quality assurance, environmental quality and management of the fisheries resources. The evolution of fisheries in Lake Victoria has undergone dramatic changes over the last few decades, leading to both ecological and socio-economic consequences. The lake has changed from one dominated by haplochromines in the 1950s, to one currently dominated by Nile perch, ‘dagaa’ (Rastrineobola argentea) and Nile tilapia. These changes have mainly been driven by the introduction of the predatory Nile perch in the lake, eutrophication due to increased human activities in the catchment, increased human population growth, overfishing and changes in the global climate system. This work should therefore be a particularly useful reference to fisheries scientists and managers, potential investors, students and other professionals who may be interested in the Lake Victoria fisheries.

Book A review of major river basins and large lakes relevant to inland fisheries

Download or read book A review of major river basins and large lakes relevant to inland fisheries written by Ainsworth, R., Cowx, I.G., Funge-Smith, S.J. and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2021-01-21 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This review presents summary information on 45 river and great lake basins of the world, which support inland fisheries. The information presented is drawn from published information in peer-reviewed journals as well as grey literature. Each basin summary is presented in a common format, covering the description of the fishery, estimates of catch and numbers of people engaged in the fishery, important biodiversity features and threats to the fishery. An analysis of the replacement costs of inland fish of the basin is also presented. This is expressed in terms of the water, land and greenhouse gas footprint that would arise if the inland fish that are currently produced had to be replaced with other forms of food (such as aquaculture fish, livestock or field crops).

Book Regional review on status and trends in aquaculture development in sub Saharan Africa 2020

Download or read book Regional review on status and trends in aquaculture development in sub Saharan Africa 2020 written by Mapfumo, B. and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2022-01-06 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This review provides an overview of the status, trends, challenges and projections for aquaculture in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) and evaluates the major trends during previous five years. While the sector still faces various internal and external challenges, the inherent natural potential of the region and rapidly increasing demand for fish has resulted in increased prioritization of aquaculture in almost all SSA countries and the African Union and subsidiary bodies have given special attention to the sector development. In order to realize its full potential, the SSA region needs to address a combination of overarching factors limiting aquaculture development so far, such as ineffective development approaches, weak governance frameworks, underdeveloped value chains and low availability as well as the high cost of key production inputs. Strengthened value chains for tilapia and catfish, promotion of new species, improved biosecurity, continued development of certification and associated harmonized best practices, improved information systems and innovations to address climate-change related impacts are some of the matters to be addressed. Financial institutions and private sector (national and international) have equally started investing, even though in the global picture such interventions may seem negligible, which makes the continent to call for more and higher levels technical and financial assistance from international partners. Upscale the status of production and productivity via healthy investments would help the sector to generate a variety of benefits including food security, livelihoods, employment, domestic and intra-regional markets, foreign currency income and other socio-economic benefits.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using the latest research in fish nutrition, this volume revises and combines the 1981 edition on coldwater fish and the 1983 edition on warmwater fish and shellfish. In addition to updating requirements for energy, protein, minerals, and vitamins, this book provides, for the first time, summary tables on nutrient requirements of a variety of fish species, including channel catfish, rainbow trout, Pacific salmon, carp, and tilapia. Tabular data on amino acid requirements of 11 species are also included. Shellfish are not included in this edition because of lack of scientific information.
