Excerpt: ..."secure," according to them, than according to the Old Church doctrines. It may be asked, --How can this be? Because, if the former doctrines are true, he receives the " tribulation and anguish," which are the just reward of his deeds, immediately on leaving the body, or in a short time afterwards; whereas, according to the other doctrines, he will not receive the full measure of the punishment of his iniquities, till his dead body is raised and sent to hell, together with his soul. Much stress is laid on the passing away of the heavens and the earth, at the period of the second coming of the Lord. As the prophetic Scriptures, that speak of this event, are taken literally, and as the literal heavens and earth remain unto this day, it is concluded that the Lord's second coming is yet future. But here, Mr. R., and all who think with him, upon this subject, forget that the heavens and the earth have passed away already, even according to their own admission. The prophet Isaiah, in very many places says, that the heavens and the earth should be destroyed, the sun be ashamed, and the moon be confounded at, or before, the appearance of Jehovah, as the Saviour of his people. Now it is admitted that these predictions have been fulfilled, --that they received their acccomplishment at the Lord's first advent, and the prophet's language is interpreted spiritually. Yet, when we apply the same principle of interpretation to our Lord's language, when he is speaking of his second coming, it is rejected. Mr. R. concludes his futile attack upon the New Church doctrine of the Last Judgment, by quoting Re. 20.11.. 13. "And I saw a great white throne, &c." This prophecy has shared the fate of all others, in not being...

Book The Making of the English Working Class

Download or read book The Making of the English Working Class written by E. P. Thompson and published by Open Road Media. This book was released on 2016-03-15 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A history of the common people and the Industrial Revolution: “A true masterpiece” and one of the Modern Library’s 100 Best Nonfiction Books of the twentieth century (Tribune). During the formative years of the Industrial Revolution, English workers and artisans claimed a place in society that would shape the following centuries. But the capitalist elite did not form the working class—the workers shaped their own creations, developing a shared identity in the process. Despite their lack of power and the indignity forced upon them by the upper classes, the working class emerged as England’s greatest cultural and political force. Crucial to contemporary trends in all aspects of society, at the turn of the nineteenth century, these workers united into the class that we recognize all across the Western world today. E. P. Thompson’s magnum opus, The Making of the English Working Class defined early twentieth-century English social and economic history, leading many to consider him Britain’s greatest postwar historian. Its publication in 1963 was highly controversial in academia, but the work has become a seminal text on the history of the working class. It remains incredibly relevant to the social and economic issues of current times, with the Guardian saying upon the book’s fiftieth anniversary that it “continues to delight and inspire new readers.”

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chartism, the mass movement for democratic rights, dominated British domestic politics in the late 1830s and 1840s. It mobilised over three million supporters at its height. Few modern European social movements, certainly in Britain, have captured the attention of posterity to quite the extent it has done. Encompassing moments of great drama, it is one of the very rare points in British history where it is legitimate to speculate how close the country came to revolution. It is also pivotal to debates around continuity and change in Victorian Britain, gender, language and identity. Chartism: A New History is the only book to offer in-depth coverage of the entire chronological spread (1838-58) of this pivotal movement and to consider its rich and varied history in full. Based throughout on original research (including newly discovered material) this is a vivid and compelling narrative of a movement which mobilised three million people at its height. The author deftly intertwines analysis and narrative, interspersing his chapters with short ‘Chartist Lives’, relating the intimate and personal to the realm of the social and political. This book will become essential reading for anyone with an interest in early Victorian Britain, specialists, students and general readers alike.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Chartism was a Victorian era working class movement for political reform in Britain between 1838 and 1848. It takes its name from the People's Charter of 1838. The term "Chartism" is the umbrella name for numerous loosely coordinated local groups, often named "Working Men's Association," articulating grievances in many cities from 1837. Its peak activity came in 1839, 1842 and 1848. It began among skilled artisans in small shops, such as shoemakers, printers, and tailors. The movement was more aggressive in areas with many distressed handloom workers, such as in Lancashire and the Midlands. It began as a petition movement which tried to mobilize "moral force", but soon attracted men who advocated strikes, General strikes and physical violence, such as Feargus O'Connor and known as "physical force" chartists."--Wikipedia
