Book Studies in Dickens

Download or read book Studies in Dickens written by Mabell S. C. Smith and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-13 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in Dickens: Edited for the Chautauqua Home Reading Series This series of "Studies in Dickens" sketches the career of the great novelist in the words of biographers and critics and collectors of reminiscences who have written about outstanding events of his life and about his work. The world that wept and laughed at his will, marked his passing years as those that produced one or another of the stories that moved them so powerfully. The initiated knew that from the sordid days of his childhood to the triumphs of his age, the ordinary experiences of work and play, the joys of fatherhood and the sorrows of bereavement, the toil that builds the foundation and the success that touches the pinnacle with fire - all were his. The selections of this volume show both his public and his private life. It is right to think of Dickens as the Prince of Laughmakers. That rank was his; but he was also the Prince of Moralists and the Prince of Humanitarians. The earliest figure that emerged with definite outline from the shade of Boz's portfolio, Mr. Pickwick in his own genial person, preached the gospel of joy and the beauty of unselfishness and the need of help for the poor and the troubled - a religion enlarged in detail but not in scope in all the writer's after work. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Paper About Chautauqua and Its Teachings Knowing that there is an increasing desire to understand the Chautauqua idea and aim which has taken captive the hearts of many thousand pilgrims who for ten consecutive summers have journeyed to this Mecca, I will attempt in these few pages to give some prominent features of this unique assembly. It is an educational movement, combining sacred and secular knowledge, taking the teachings and doctrines of the Holy Bible as the chief corner stone. In other words, Chautauqua seeks to establish the relation of Christianity and of culture as they appear in our individual as well as in the national life. All persons are concerned in that which shapes the life, the destiny and the greatness of the nation, of which we all form a part. This great movement, which has caused from every part of the wide world the inquiry, "What is this Chautauqua?" Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NEW PRINT WITH PROFESSIONAL TYPE-SET IN CONTRAST TO SCANNED PRINTS OFFERED BY OTHERS A Chautauqua Idyl This book is a result of an effort made by us towards making a contribution to the preservation and repair of original classic literature. In an attempt to preserve, improve and recreate the original content, we have worked towards: 1. Type-setting & Reformatting: The complete work has been re-designed via professional layout, formatting and type-setting tools to re-create the same edition with rich typography, graphics, high quality images, and table elements, giving our readers the feel of holding a 'fresh and newly' reprinted and/or revised edition, as opposed to other scanned & printed (Optical Character Recognition - OCR) reproductions. 2. Correction of imperfections: As the work was re-created from the scratch, therefore, it was vetted to rectify certain conventional norms with regard to typographical mistakes, hyphenations, punctuations, blurred images, missing content/pages, and/or other related subject matters, upon our consideration. Every attempt was made to rectify the imperfections related to omitted constructs in the original edition via other references. However, a few of such imperfections which could not be rectified due to intentional\unintentional omission of content in the original edition, were inherited and preserved from the original work to maintain the authenticity and construct, relevant to the work. We believe that this work holds historical, cultural and/or intellectual importance in the literary works community, therefore despite the oddities, we accounted the work for print as a part of our continuing effort towards preservation of literary work and our contribution towards the development of the society as a whole, driven by our beliefs. We are grateful to our readers for putting their faith in us and accepting our imperfections with regard to preservation of the historical content. HAPPY READING!
