Book excerpt: I evaluated the status of secondary succession in a bottomland hardwood forest in northeastern Louisiana. Additionally, I evaluated factors that could influence the future composition of the plant community. Because my study was part of a long-term study on secondary succession, I was able to include historical data in my analyses. After 28 years of secondary succession, while portions of the site have transitioned to forest, other areas of the site are still dominated by woody vines, which have excluded the regeneration of tree seedlings. This has led to a state of arrested succession, an alternative stable state during community assembly. High cover by vines in congruence with limited seed dispersal by trees and lack of an effective seed bank for tree species may continue to limit tree regeneration. Long-term analysis indicated that the community has become relatively stable, lending support for arrested succession. -Author
