Book excerpt: The properties of zirconium alloyed with aluminum tin, and molybdenum were investigated. Using reactorgrade zirconium sponge, 11 zirconium-base alloys were double arc-melted and cast into 6-in.-diam. ingots weighing 35 lb each. By such standard hot working procedures as extruding and rolling, the ingots were converted to 1/8-in.-thick strips. The extruded and rolled products were used for a variety of evaluation studies which included corrosion thermal conductivity, tensile, and creep tests. The alloys demonstrated short-time elevated temperature strength properties equal to or greater than type-304 stainless steel. Their corrosion resistance in sodium, at 1000 deg F, compares favorable with that of unalloyed zirconium. The creep resistance and the thermal conductivity were found to be less than those for type-304 stainless steel, but adequate for nuclear reactor application. (auth).

Book Studies on high strength zirconium pressure tube alloys final report

Download or read book Studies on high strength zirconium pressure tube alloys final report written by A. G. Wysiekierski and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Zirconium alloys containing various percentages of sn, mo, nb, si, ga and al were creep tested at 450 degrees c in water quenched and air cooled conditions. the most effective additions were sn, mo, nb and al but the use of al was discontinued because of the poor corrosion properties. water quenching improved the creep properties at high stresses (70 kpsi/483 mn/m sup(2)) but at lower stresses (30 kpsi/207 mn/m sup(2)) the air cooled and water quenched structures gave creep rates of the same order of magnitude (10 sup(-6) to 10 sup(-7) hr sup(-1)). the air cooled alloys showed an improvement in creep properties with increasing solution temperature and a notable improvement was observed at and above a certain solution temperature. increasing the sn content of the alloys increased the solution temperature at which improvement was noted, whereas mo and nb additions lowered the temperature. the improvement in creep properties is associated with the formation of alpha and beta network produced by the decomposition of high temperature beta with the increasing solute content of alpha. since the alloying additions influence the solution temperature at which the improvement is observed it was difficult to determine the full importance of composition variations; however, the results indicate that the el alloy (3.8 sn - 0.7 mo - 0.6 nb) provides the best combination of alpha and beta stabilisers. the corrosion results have shown that the best performance in 300 degrees c oxygenated water and 400 degrees c steam was given by the el alloy. in 300 degrees c water the alloy could be used without cladding; however, cladding would be necessary in 400 degrees c steam.
