Book excerpt: Excerpt from None Like It: A Plea for the Old Sword A preacher's point of View. In these days the position of the preacher is Often one Of embarrass ment, because he cannot fail to be aware that the Book out of which he takes his texts is regarded, probably by some Of his own hearers, as at best but partially and intermittently inspired. The first thing the preacher has to do is to establish the inspiration of his text, or, against the will Of his more critical hearers, to take it for granted. If preacher and hearer are dis agreed as to the inspiration of the text, and the con sequent authority of the text, the cleavage cannot but have a disastrous effect upon the sermon. The sermon may, indeed, not be lacking in good things. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Gospel According to Saint Paul Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Gospel According to Saint Paul Classic Reprint written by William Porcher Dubose and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-24 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gospel According to Saint Paul IN advocating and pressing any particular point of View, one is inevitably liable to press it unduly and at the expense of other points of View. In the quest of truth this danger ought not to be too much of a deter rent to either freedom of thought or boldness of expres sion. The ultimate aim of each one of us should be not to save ourselves from error but to advance the truth. We may safely rely upon it that our truth will in the end be accepted and our error corrected. If I had been too much afraid of going wrong I should have made no progress in growing right; who of us that has really thought or spoken may not say that of himself? For my own part, I have not merely tradi tionally believed but become personally convinced that there is a truth of the Scriptures and that there is a mind of the Church; and that each of these will take care of itself as against the infinite errors and vagaries of individual thinkers and writers. I have in my mind not only an implicit faith but a rational science or philosophy of these things, which at least satisfies myself and gives me security and rest from the fear. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gospel of Paul: The Gospel of Jesus Have no doubt been largely determined by the writings of the Apostle Paul. The statements of the Saviour regard ing His own person and work, plain and pregnant as these are, run into a peculiar and definite mould when passing through the mind of Paul, and come forth stamped with his own individuality. In more recent times some critics have endeavoured to make out that the writings of the great Apostle set forth a different gospel from that contained in the sayings of Jesus as recorded in the Synoptic Gospels. We recognise the profound truth of Peter's words, Lord, to whom shall we go? Thou hast the words of eternal life. But it does not follow that the same Spirit of Truth who spake in and through Jesus Christ (heb. Ii. Does not. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Culture and the Gospel, or a Plea for the Sufficiency of the Gospel to Meet the Wants of an Enlightened Age To the Greeks and Romans, Saturn ruled the earth. He, fearing that he Should be de throned by one of his sons, devoured his chil dren at their birth. But Jupiter was concealed by his mother, and at an early age deposed his father, and reigned in his stead. Christianity also has 'its tradition of a golden age, when love reigned, and sorrow was unknown. Its records speak of the advent of a hostile power, of the entrance of Satan, sin, death, and all our woe. But they know nothing of another divinity able to wrest the sceptre from the hands of Him who first held the throne. They. Book The Gospel in the Gospels Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Gospel in the Gospels Classic Reprint written by William Porcher Dubose and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gospel in the Gospels The title of the present volume is intended to indicate that, while it aims to be an exposition of the whole Gospel of Jesus Christ, it does not purpose to be a whole or final exposition of that Gospel. It looks forward definitely to a further and fuller expression of it. We have here to do with the Gospel, not in its developed utterance as that of the New Testament or of the Church, but only so far as it is contained in our canonical Gospels or can by ourselves be deduced from them. My own position is that, while the Gospel as an act or fact is complete in Jesus Christ Himself, the rationale of its operation in human salvation is best interpreted and stated by St. Paul. My true objective point has therefore been the completer construction of the Gospel according to St. Paul, to be treated in a volume to follow the present one. That the epistles of St. Paul are an interpretation only, and not a transformation nor even an essential modification, of the Gospel of our Lord is - next to the hope of casting a single new ray of light upon the nature of the Gospel itself - the point which I have most at heart to prove in the end. Book excerpt: Excerpt from In the Vineyard: A Plea for Christian Work The attention of believers is being drawn to the matter of christian Won]: as never before since the days of the apostles. It is high time. Nineteen cen tuties of our era have nearly gone, and yet the greater part of the world is lying in almost utter ignorance of the gospel and even in so-called Christian countries, most of the people are in an unconverted and perishing state. What a clarion-summons \in such facts! Is it being suficiently heeded? With all the gain lately made (and that it is very great let us joyfully confess), it is still true, that most professing Christians, even of those not unexemplary in other respects, are doing very little to spread the religion they accept. Only by courtesy can they be called laborer: in the vineyard. They are not even in the market-place, waiting for work. The Master is not yet done saying, The har vest truly is great, but the laborers are few: pray ye, therefore, the Lord of the harvest, that he would send forth laborers into his harvest. The aim of this volume is altogether practical. It seeks to promote that active efiort in the cause of Christ which his law requires, and which the needs of a world in large part still lying in wickedness beg for with most affecting importunity, but which is still so insufficiently granted. And this end is sought, first, by the persuasion of illustrious examples, and, secondb', by such appeals, as, without a show of argument, but with all its substance, may present in an orderly and vivid manner the leading principles, methods, and te wards oi work in the Vineyard. Book The Literary Attractions of the Bible

Download or read book The Literary Attractions of the Bible written by Le Roy J. Halsey and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-18 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Literary Attractions of the Bible: Or Plea for the Word of God, Considered as a Classic Of course nothing new can now be offered or attempted on such a, theme. But it is hoped that the easy argument, if the writer may venture to call it such, which runs through these chapters, will at least arrest the attention of some who might be repelled by more difficult, and formal discussions of the evidence for the Divine inspiration of the Scriptures. Perhaps the best evidence, after all, is to let the Bible speak for itself. It is a great point gained, when we can get what is in the Bible fairly before the minds of men. But there is more in it than many think; much more than any casual reader is ever aware of. And how is the Bible to speak for itself to those who will not patiently read it? Other books must speak for it, and tell what it contains. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Its scope is global (China, India, Egypt, Iran, Judaism, the Greco-Roman world) and inter-disciplinary (textual philology, history of art and architecture, philosophy, gardening). Its emphasis is on the complexity of the modernization process and of reactions to it: ideas and technologies travelled from India to Iran and from Japan to China, while reactions show tensions between museumization and the recreation of 'presence'. It challenges readers to rethink the assumptions of the disciplines in which they were trained
