Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This ambitious study of Staub's work by architectural historian Stephen Fox goes beyond a description of Staub's houses. Fox analyzes the roles of space, structure, and decoration in creating, defining, and maintaining social class structures and expectations and shows how Staub was able to incorporate these elements and understandings into the elegant buildings he designed for his clients. In the process, he contributes greatly to a fuller understanding of Houston's emergence as a premier American city."--BOOK JACKET.

Book New Solutions for House Museums

Download or read book New Solutions for House Museums written by Donna Ann Harris and published by AltaMira Press. This book was released on 2007-04-16 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A generational shift is occurring at historic house museums as board members and volunteers retire while few young people step forward to take their place. These landmarks are also plagued by serious deferred maintenance, and many have no endowment funds. What will happen to these sites in the next ten years, and what can be done to assure their continued preservation for generations to come? In New Solutions for House Museums Harris examines possible options and provides a decision-making methodology as well as a dozen case studies of house museums that have made a successful transition to a new owner or user.

Book Interpreting Slavery at Museums and Historic Sites

Download or read book Interpreting Slavery at Museums and Historic Sites written by Kristin L. Gallas and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2014-12-23 with total page 149 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interpreting Slavery at Museums and Historic Sites aims to move the field forward in its collective conversation about the interpretation of slavery—acknowledging the criticism of the past and acting in the present to develop an inclusive interpretation of slavery. Presenting the history of slavery in a comprehensive and conscientious manner is difficult and requires diligence and compassion—for the history itself, for those telling the story, and for those hearing the stories—but it’s a necessary part of our collective narrative about our past, present, and future. This book features best practices for: Interpreting slavery across the country and for many people. The history of slavery, while traditionally interpreted primarily on southern plantations, is increasingly recognized as relevant at historic sites across the nation. It is also more than just an African-American/European-American story—it is relevant to the history of citizens of Latino, Caribbean, African and indigenous descent, as well. It is also pertinent to those descended from immigrants who arrived after slavery, whose stories are deeply intertwined with the legacy of slavery and its aftermath. Developing support within an institution for the interpretation of slavery. Many institutions are reticent to approach such a potentially volatile subject, so this book examines how proponents at several sites, including Monticello and Mount Vernon, were able to make a strong case to their constituents. Training interpreters in not only a depth of knowledge of the subject but also the confidence to speak on this controversial issue in public and the compassion to handle such a sensitive historical issue. The book will be accessible and of interest for professionals at all levels in the public history field, as well as students at the undergraduate and graduate levels in museum studies and public history programs.

Book Floodplain Management

Download or read book Floodplain Management written by Bob Freitag and published by Island Press. This book was released on 2012-06-22 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A flooding river is very hard to stop. Many residents of the United States have discovered this the hard way. Right now, over five million Americans hold flood insurance policies from the National Flood Insurance Program, which estimates that flooding causes at least six billion dollars in damages every year. Like rivers after a rainstorm, the financial costs are rising along with the toll on residents. And the worst is probably yet to come. Most scientists believe that global climate change will result in increases in flooding. The authors of this book present a straightforward argument: the time to stop a flooding rivers is before is before it floods. Floodplain Management outlines a new paradigm for flood management, one that emphasizes cost-effective, long-term success by integrating physical, chemical, and biological systems with our societal capabilities. It describes our present flood management practices, which are often based on dam or levee projects that do not incorporate the latest understandings about river processes. And it suggests that a better solution is to work with the natural tendencies of the river: retreat from the floodplain by preventing future development (and sometimes even removing existing structures); accommodate the effects of floodwaters with building practices; and protect assets with nonstructural measures if possible, and with large structural projects only if absolutely necessary.

Book Framing the Challenge of Urban Flooding in the United States

Download or read book Framing the Challenge of Urban Flooding in the United States written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2019-04-29 with total page 101 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Flooding is the natural hazard with the greatest economic and social impact in the United States, and these impacts are becoming more severe over time. Catastrophic flooding from recent hurricanes, including Superstorm Sandy in New York (2012) and Hurricane Harvey in Houston (2017), caused billions of dollars in property damage, adversely affected millions of people, and damaged the economic well-being of major metropolitan areas. Flooding takes a heavy toll even in years without a named storm or event. Major freshwater flood events from 2004 to 2014 cost an average of $9 billion in direct damage and 71 lives annually. These figures do not include the cumulative costs of frequent, small floods, which can be similar to those of infrequent extreme floods. Framing the Challenge of Urban Flooding in the United States contributes to existing knowledge by examining real-world examples in specific metropolitan areas. This report identifies commonalities and variances among the case study metropolitan areas in terms of causes, adverse impacts, unexpected problems in recovery, or effective mitigation strategies, as well as key themes of urban flooding. It also relates, as appropriate, causes and actions of urban flooding to existing federal resources or policies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nelson Byrd Woltz's award-winning landscape architecture is widely celebrated for combining sheer beauty with ecologically regenerative design. The firm's innovative and highly collaborative design methods bring depleted ecosystems back to life—restoring meadows, streams, woodlands, and ponds in urban and rural settings and cultivating connections between sites and their complex regional environments. Nelson Byrd Woltz: Garden, Park, Community, Farm presents a selection of twelve built projects representing the firm's contemporary vision for sustainable design. These examples demonstrate the remarkable breadth of their practice and inspire a new understanding of how landscape architecture can shape our world through urbanism, agriculture, and conservation sciences. The projects range from an urban townhouse garden to an animal-friendly habitat for the National Zoo's giant pandas to a large-scale sheep-and-cattle station along the coast of New Zealand. Exceptional photography, hand-drawn plans, and lists of plants and materials document each project, and an appendix of details from numerous additional designs provides an extensive visual reference guide. Nelson Byrd Woltz's transformative landscapes are both an open invitation to learn about nature and a much-needed contribution to the health of our cities, farms, and wildlands.
