  • Author : Bart D. Ehrman
  • Publisher : Harper Collins

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New York Times bestselling author and Bible expert Bart Ehrman reveals how Jesus’s divinity became dogma in the first few centuries of the early church. The claim at the heart of the Christian faith is that Jesus of Nazareth was, and is, God. But this is not what the original disciples believed during Jesus’s lifetime—and it is not what Jesus claimed about himself. How Jesus Became God tells the story of an idea that shaped Christianity, and of the evolution of a belief that looked very different in the fourth century than it did in the first. A master explainer of Christian history, texts, and traditions, Ehrman reveals how an apocalyptic prophet from the backwaters of rural Galilee crucified for crimes against the state came to be thought of as equal with the one God Almighty, Creator of all things. But how did he move from being a Jewish prophet to being God? In a book that took eight years to research and write, Ehrman sketches Jesus’s transformation from a human prophet to the Son of God exalted to divine status at his resurrection. Only when some of Jesus’s followers had visions of him after his death—alive again—did anyone come to think that he, the prophet from Galilee, had become God. And what they meant by that was not at all what people mean today. Written for secular historians of religion and believers alike, How Jesus Became God will engage anyone interested in the historical developments that led to the affirmation at the heart of Christianity: Jesus was, and is, God.

Book A Study of Petrine Christology from Key Texts in 2 Peter

Download or read book A Study of Petrine Christology from Key Texts in 2 Peter written by Kelly Adair Seely and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2021-10-19 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Second Peter is full of christological language. Scholars have often overlooked the christological richness as they have focused heavily on the issues of eschatology and authorship. The uniqueness of the Son from the Father as well as the divinity of Jesus are at the forefront of the short epistle. Further, Ernst Kasemann famously criticized 2 Peter for being void of Christology and the cross, and thus the gospel. The author analyzes the Christology of 2 Peter, particularly as it relates to the Petrine view of the divinity of Jesus and the distinctness and uniqueness of the Son from the Father. This study examines the christological depth in these key areas as a response to critics like Kasemann. Kasemann first looked into the eschatological arguments of 2 Peter and claimed he was not able to find any christological orientation. The student of 2 Peter must not look through eschatology to see the rich Christology which fills the verses of the epistle. However, when the reader examines the christological language and themes within 2 Peter, he/she is faced with a beautiful portrayal of Jesus and the Father.

Book excerpt: “This book will prove to be a most effective weapon… against the debunking and skeptical attitudes toward the Gospels that are so prevalent, not only in academe, but also on the street, among young people who, sadly, are leaving the Churches in droves.” – Robert Barron, author of Catholicism For well over a hundred years now, many scholars have questioned the historical truth of the Gospels, claiming that they were originally anonymous. Others have even argued that Jesus of Nazareth did not think he was God and never claimed to be divine. In The Case for Jesus, Dr. Brant Pitre, the bestselling author of Jesus and the Jewish Roots of the Eucharist, goes back to the sources—the biblical and historical evidence for Christ—in order to answer several key questions, including: • Were the four Gospels really anonymous? • Are the Gospels folklore? Or are they biographies? • Were the four Gospels written too late to be reliable? • What about the so-called “Lost Gospels,” such as “Q” and the Gospel of Thomas? • Did Jesus claim to be God? • Is Jesus divine in all four Gospels? Or only in John? • Did Jesus fulfill the Jewish prophecies of the Messiah? • Why was Jesus crucified? • What is the evidence for the Resurrection? As The Case for Jesus will show, recent discoveries in New Testament scholarship, as well as neglected evidence from ancient manuscripts and the early church fathers, together have the potential to pull the rug out from under a century of skepticism toward the traditional Gospels. Above all, Pitre shows how the divine claims of Jesus of Nazareth can only be understood by putting them in their ancient Jewish context.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All of our attempts to find the historical backgrounds to texts have led us to believe that we have "figured out" the Bible. Steering a course between modernity's obsession with historical readings and fundamentalism's compulsion for ahistorical readings, Christopher Seitz recovers a figural/typological approach to both the Old and New Testament that shapes a theological understanding of Scripture. Figured Out examines the loss of figural assumptions and models another way forward.

Book excerpt: Christology: True God, True Man is a thorough presentation of the convictions at the heart of Roman Catholic Christology. Examining faith, reasoning and history as they bear on the question, "Who is this Jesus?" this booklet provides a resource for guiding catechists to a clearer knowledge of Jesus Christ. Catholic Basics: A Pastoral Ministry Series offers an in-depth yet accessible understanding of the fundamentals of the Catholic faith for adults, both those active in pastoral ministry and those preparing for ministry. The series helps readers explore the Catholic tradition and apply what they have learned to their lives and ministry situations. Includes study questions and suggestions for further reading. Because of the intense media-driven culture of American -society, many people have a hard time differentiating between these images of Jesus Christ. They wonder which one is true. Often, their own views wind up a mixture of disparate elements. This struggle may even be the case with people raised in one particular Christian tradition. Chances are they have seen several contrasting images on television and in movies even before beginning formal religious education. This dilemma causes no small challenge for pastoral ministers, who must not only accurately convey the Catholic Church's teaching but also deal deftly with the myriad other images of Jesus Christ--and clearly show the difference. --From the introduction Christology: True God, True Man addresses Standards #520.01-520.04, 520.07, 520.08, 520.17, 520.19, and 532.304.
