Book excerpt: The purpose of this thesis is to create a set of core performance metrics that will be used to evaluate how effective price-based acquisition is in the accomplishment of eliminating or reducing the differences between the Department of Defense's acquisition process and the buying practices of the private sector in the procurement of goods and services. A survey of acquisition professionals at various contracting organizations throughout the Services was conducted to gain an insight into the current understanding and use of price- based acquisition in the contracting process. From the literature review and responses to the survey an analysis was conducted on the current goals, understanding and use of price-based acquisition in the Department of Defense. Book Performance Measurement of Acquisitions and Acquisition Series

Download or read book Performance Measurement of Acquisitions and Acquisition Series written by Jens Engelhardt and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The profitability of merger and acquisition (M&A) activity has generated a small mountain of research over the past 20 years" (Bruner, 2002: 48). This 'small mountain' uses a variety of measures to determine acquisition success - with more than ambiguous results. This thesis adds to this discussion from a different perspective: practitioners were asked to illustrate their approach to measuring acquisition performance. Drawing from a survey of 24 very active acquirers, this thesis generates two main findings. First, it reviews the various criteria used to measure acquisition performance and presents manager's assessment of each of them. Findings indicate that accounting-based measures and non-financial criteria are significantly more important than those of a stock market nature. This contradicts most academic approaches that favor stock market-related measurement (in most cases using abnormal returns). In addition, the mutual relatedness of the criteria is discussed. Second, the thesis identifies companies that have pursued or are currently pursuing an acquisition program, defined as the acquisition of several mutually related targets. Five of these companies are introduced in more detail, as are the characteristics of their respective acquisition program. I also elaborate on the performance measurement of these programs. A five-dimensional framework is used to compare the performance measurement of the case study companies. Results show that acquisition programs have existed for quite a while. Only one major difference could be found to the measurement of single acquisitions: due to their larger relative size, acquisition programs have a more significant potential impact on the company's stock price and, as such, are more carefully watched by analysts and shareholders. Hence, stock market-oriented criteria seem to be more meaningful than for single acquisitions.

Book Outperform with Expectations Based Management

Download or read book Outperform with Expectations Based Management written by Tom Copeland and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2011-09-28 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: CEOs and managers live and die by delivering superior performance to shareholders. This is why expectations-based management has been developed. Outperform with Expectations-Based Management (EBM) introduces a revolutionary new performance metric that links performance standards, performance measurement, and the achievement of performance. It's easy to say that if a CEO can get performance measurement right, then performance improvement will follow. But what is the "right" measure of performance, and how do you use it to improve performance? Authors Tom Copeland and Aaron Dolgoff answer these questions and many more, as they show you how to find the measure of performance that has the strongest link to the creation of wealth for the owners of both public and private companies. They answer the puzzle of why growth in earnings is not correlated with shareholder returns and explain the under- and over-investment traps. And they explain how clear communications to investors and managers alike improve value. The bottom line is that share prices go up when companies exceed expectations -- short-term and long-term -- of income statement and balance sheet performance and daily operating value drivers. Gain a complete understanding of EBM and discover how to do this, and much more, while staying competitive in an unforgiving business environment.

Book Performance Measurement and Incentive Systems in Purchasing

Download or read book Performance Measurement and Incentive Systems in Purchasing written by Erik Hofmann and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-10-01 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, purchasing performance measurement have steadily gained in importance in theory and practice. Yet, in many cases, the focus still remains on cost items, especially savings. Moreover, reported performance ratios in purchasing are frequently called into question in terms of their amount and efficacy. Most of the time, there is no tie-in at all with staff compensations. To meet these and other challenges, this book presents a holistic approach for purchasing performance measurement and the incentive systems associated with it. The following topics are dealt with in detail: • Purchasing performance measurement on the level of commodity groups and the procurement organization • Supplier evaluation and performance measurement on the level of the buyer-supplier relationship • Comprehensive systems for purchasing performance measurement, such as the procurement value added and the purchasing balanced scorecard • Performance-oriented incentive systems and bonus payments for buyers, procurement organizations and suppliers Readers are thus provided with comprehensive guidelines for the implementation and realization of sustained performance measurement and incentivization in purchasing.

Book Transforming Performance Measurement

Download or read book Transforming Performance Measurement written by Dean Spitzer and published by AMACOM. This book was released on 2007-02-09 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It's no secret that you can't improve your organization's performance without measuring it. In fact, every function, unit, process, and the organization as a whole, is built and run according to the parameters and expectations of its measurement system. So you'd better make sure you're doing it right. All too often, performance measurement creates dysfunction, whether among individuals, teams, or across entire divisions and companies. Most traditional measurement systems actually encourage unhealthy competition for personal gain, creating internal conflict and breeding distrust of performance measurement. Transforming Performance Measurement presents a breakthrough approach that will not only significantly reduce those dysfunctions, but also promote alignment with business strategy, maximize cross-enterprise integration, and help everyone to work collaboratively to drive value throughout your organization. Performance improvement thought leader Dean Spitzer explains why performance measurement should be less about calculations and analysis and more about the crucial social factors that determine how well the measurements get used. His ""socialization of measurement"" process focuses on learning and improvement from measurement, and on the importance of asking such questions as: How well do our measures reflect our business model? How successfully are they driving our strategy? What should we be measuring and not measuring? Are the right people having the right measurement discussions? Performance measurement is a dynamic process that calls for an awareness of the balance necessary between seemingly disparate ideas: the technical and the social aspects of performance measurement. For example, you need technology to manage the flood of data, but you must make sure that it supports the people who will be making decisions and taking action crucial to your organization's success. This book shows you how to design that technical-social balance into your measurement system. While it is urgent to start taking action now, transforming your organization's performance measurement system will take time. Transforming Performance Measurement gives you assessment tools to gauge where you are now and a roadmap for moving, with little or no disruption, to a more "transformational" and mature measurement system. The book also provides 34 TMAPs, Transformational Measurement Action Plans, which suggest both well-accepted and "emergent" measures (in areas such as marketing, human resources, customer service, knowledge management, productivity, information technology, research and development, costing, and more) that you can use right away. In the end, you get what you measure. If you measure the wrong things, you will take your company farther and farther away from its mission and strategic goals. Transforming Performance Measurement tells you not only what to measure, but how to do it -- and in what context -- to make a truly transformational difference in your enterprise.

Book How to Measure Performance of the Purchasing Function

Download or read book How to Measure Performance of the Purchasing Function written by Filippos Siakavaras and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2021-06-17 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purchasing function has been put in a leading position in many business sectors in recent years in terms of its impact on a company's competitiveness and consequently the company's value. Therefore, it is crucial to understand how the activities of this function are being accounted for and measured. This book addresses the hypothesis if the currently existing performance measuring tools and the role given to the purchasing function are valid and sufficient. Based on best practices (e.g. automotive) it investigates on what processes purchasing departments should focus on. The findings during a conducted research and the generated results have been taken as the basis for deriving an example for measuring the contribution of the purchasing function and its performance. It was found that the methodology was successful in measuring the contribution while making the influenced factors transparent. An applied case study based on best practices delivered the basis for a new target setting system in the form of measurement criteria for purchasing departments. This book presents a derived system that is valid and applicable in a real life environment. This book presents an adjusted way of measuring the performance of purchasing departments by introducing new ways. A methodology for the objective assessment of the contributing factors by defining the role of purchasing, its tasks, goals and direct and indirect influence on the company's value by using a scorecard system. The proposed system has been put in practice for validation. This book provides a significant step in understanding performance measurement of the purchasing function. The proposed methodology constitutes a scientific advancement, successful in quantifying (through a catalogue of criteria) the measurement of a purchasing department's performance, for the assessment of the purchasing function's contribution to the company's value (financial and non-financial contributors). Further views on the current role of purchasing in the automotive industry, if its role should be changed in the future as well as how the results of purchasing influences the company's performance are contained, too. In summary, this book is about increasing the awareness of the influence on capabilities and the impact of purchasing actions. The development of a criteria catalogue to measure correctly the monetary and non-monetary influence of the activities of purchasing to drive the company's value in a positive way.
