Book A Performance Guide of Selected Works for Horn and Mallet Percussion

Download or read book A Performance Guide of Selected Works for Horn and Mallet Percussion written by Casey N Maltese and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since its early development in the 16th century, chamber music has had an extensive evolution. In recent years as composers have become more experimental concerning instrumentation in chamber music settings, many have began to combine wind instruments with percussion, thus creating a new genre. Even more specific genres have evolved from these happenings in chamber music, such as the duo of a solo wind instrument paired with a mallet percussion instrument. The horn, an important and diverse figure amongst the chamber music literature, has been no exception to this development. There has been an increase in popularity of music for horn and mallet percussion to be performed and recorded, but there has not been an extensive amount of scholarship on the topic. This study will focus exclusively on three works for horn and mallet percussion: HornVibes (1984) by Verne Reynolds, Sonata for Horn and Marimba (1986) by Charles Taylor, and The Call of Boromir (1996) by Daniel McCarthy. These works were selected based on their availability through professional recordings and publishing companies. Coincidentally, the three chosen works for this study were composed for Leslie and Christopher Norton. The purpose of this paper is to provide a performance guide for horn players who are considering these three works for a performance. It contains an introduction that displays the need for the study, a review of the role of the horn in chamber music, an explanation of the events leading up to the study, and methods used to conduct the study. For each individual work, there is a chapter containing a brief biography of the composer, an analysis, and performance preparation suggestions. Musical examples and tables are used in each chapter to aid in explanation. The goal of this performance guide is to provide an introduction to a newer genre of chamber music, and to provide horn players with insight and recommendations in order to properly prepare and perform works for this unique ensemble.

Book Global Percussion Innovations

Download or read book Global Percussion Innovations written by Louise Devenish and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-09-03 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First emerging in North America and Europe in the late 1920s, contemporary percussion practices have transitioned from the fringes of contemporary music to the forefront over the past 90 years. In the 1960s contemporary percussion practices reached Australian shores and a new generation of artists added their voices to this narrative. The role of Australian activity is not yet embedded in the wider narrative of international contemporary percussion, nor is the significance of developments in contemporary percussion practices fully realised in the context of Australian music history. In this monograph, political, social and cultural influences on this art form will be examined for the first time in a historical survey of contemporary percussion music in Australia over a 50-year period, from 1960 to 2010. The rise of the percussion ensemble in the twentieth century to a standard chamber music ensemble is now recognised as one of the major advances in western art music practice internationally. A focus will be placed on ensemble activity via definitive documentation and analysis of ensembles that are amongst the most pioneering and longest established of Australian contemporary music organisations, including the Australian Percussion Ensemble, Synergy Percussion, Adelaide Percussions, Nova Ensemble, Tetrafide Percussion, Taikoz, Clocked Out and Speak Percussion amongst others. Closing with a discussion of influences and identity, this historical narrative will expand our understanding of the impact of Australian contributions to the international contemporary music scene while simultaneously examining how developments in contemporary percussion have contributed to Australia’s cultural identity.

Book Dennis Brain

Download or read book Dennis Brain written by Stephen Gamble and published by University of North Texas Press. This book was released on 2011 with total page 395 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The British horn player Dennis Brain (1921-1957) is commonly described by such statements as "the greatest horn player of the 20th Century," "a genius," and "a legend." He was both a prodigy and popularizer, famously performing a concerto on a garden hose in perfect pitch. On his usual concert instrument his tone was of unsurpassed beauty and clarity, complemented by a flawless technique. The recordings he made with Herbert von Karajan of Mozart's horn concerti are considered the definitive interpretations. Brain enlisted in the English armed forces during World War II for seven years, joining the National Symphony Orchestra in wartime in 1942. After the war he filled the principal horn positions in both the Philharmonia and Royal Philharmonic Orchestras. He later formed his own wind quintet and began conducting. Composers including Benjamin Britten and Paul Hindemith lined up to write music for him. Even fifty years after his tragic death at the age of 36 in an auto accident in 1957, Peter Maxwell Davies was commissioned to write a piece in his honor. Stephen Gamble and William Lynch have conducted numerous interviews with family, friends, and colleagues and uncovered information in the BBC archives and other lesser known sources about recordings that were previously unknown. This volume describes Brain's life and analyzes in depth his musical career. Its appendices of information on performances will appeal to music historians, and its details on Brain's instruments and equipment will be useful to horn players.

Book A Conductor s Guide to Choral orchestral Works Twentieth Century Part II

Download or read book A Conductor s Guide to Choral orchestral Works Twentieth Century Part II written by Jonathan D. Green and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 1998 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This innovative survey of large choral-orchestral works is a continuation of the author's previous study of twentieth century works with English texts. Green examines nearly one hundred works, from Rachmaninov's Vesna to Penderecki's Song of Songs. For each work, he provides a biography of the composer, complete instrumentation, text sources, editions, availability of performing materials, performance issues, discography, and bibliography of the composer and the work. Based upon direct score study, each work has been evaluated in terms of potential performance problems, rehearsal issues, and level of difficulty for both the choir and orchestra. When present, solo roles are described. The composers represented in this work include Bela Bartok, Leonard Bernstein, Ernest Bloch, Maurice Duruf , Hans Werner Henze, Paul Hindemith, Arthur Honegger, Leos Janacek, Gy rgy Ligeti, Gustav Mahler, Carl Orff, Krzysztof Penderecki, Francis Poulenc, Igor Stravinsky, Anton Webern, and Kurt Weill. Written as a field guide for conductors and others involved in programming concerts for choir and orchestra, this text will prove a useful source of new repertoire ideas and an invaluable aid to rehearsal preparation.
