Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Painter of Dreams, and Other Biographical Studies Certain material for A Dupe of Destiny has been supplied by a grandson of Madame Patterson Bonaparte; by a friend of her family (at the house of whose grandfather Jerome Bonaparte met his future bride, then Eliza beth Patterson, and whose relations were inti mately acquainted with her in later years, when a repudiated wife) from Dr Richard Caton of Liverpool, collateral descendant of Mrs Robert Patterson, nee Caton; and by Mrs Murray, nee Patterson, whose grandfather was a brother of William Patterson, the father of the above-mentioned Elizabeth, Madame Patterson Bonaparte. Much of the information in A Favourite of Destiny was given me by the aforesaid Dr Richard Caton, and by Mrs Brown Westhead, of Lea Castle, Worcestershire, collateral descendants of Richard Caton of Baltimore. The correspondence in A Painter of Realities was given me by my cousin, Philip Spencer Stan h0pe, great-nephew of Charles Spencer Stanhope, the early patron of Herring. The material for A Painter of Dreams, the life of my uncle Roddam Spencer Stanhope, has been furnished from papers in the possession of various members of my family. It will therefore be seen that, in each instance, the source whence my information has been de rived is unimpeachable, although at the same time one which was probably inaccessible to the general public. Analysis of the cultural relations between Italy and Britain has focused traditionally on the special place that Italy had in the British imagination, but the cultural and artistic exchanges between the two countries have been much misunderstood. This book aims to correct this imbalance by placing Pre-Rapahelitism in its European context. It explores the nature of its influence on Italy, how it was transmitted, and how it was manifested, by focusing on the role of Italian Anglophiles, the English communities in Florence and Rome, the writings of Gabriele D'Annunzio, and a number of Italian artists active in Tuscany and Rome. The works of Cellini, Ricci, Gioja, De Carolis, and Sartorio in particular fully demonstrate the impact of Pre-Raphaelitism on the young Italian school of painting which found in the English movement an ideal link with its glorious past on which it could build a new artistic identity. These artists show that English Pre-Raphaelitism was one of the most powerful single influences on fin-de-siecle Italian culture.
