Book The Neurobiology of the Amygdala

Download or read book The Neurobiology of the Amygdala written by Basil Eleftheriou and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-13 with total page 820 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, great interest has been focused on the field of neurobiology. In the last decade, various international and regional meetings, symposia, seminars and workshops have been organized to discuss brain regions such as the hypothalamus, cerebellum, medulla, cortex and hippocampus. A number of books have been published as a consequence of these gatherings. Uniquely and singularly absent from these conclaves has been a truly interdisciplinary discussion of the amygdala. The various chapters of this book represent the formal talks presented at The Advanced Study Institute held at the Jackson Laboratory, Bar Harbor, Maine, from June 6 to 17, 1971, with funds made available from the Scientific Affairs Committee of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization and the National Science Foundation. The speakers and participants are grateful to these two institutions for being given the opportunity to gather and discuss their respective works that represent years of experi mental and clinical research centering on the amygdala. It is hoped that the experiments discussed in this book will act as a major stimulus to other scientists to initiate complementary and supplementary experiments for the better understanding of the specific role of the amygdala.

Book Atlas of the Anatomy of Dolphins and Whales

Download or read book Atlas of the Anatomy of Dolphins and Whales written by Stefan Huggenberger and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2018-11-20 with total page 539 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Atlas of the Anatomy of Dolphins and Whales is a detailed, fully illustrated atlas on the anatomy and morphology of toothed and whalebone whales. The book provides basic knowledge on anatomical structures, in particular, soft tissues, and functions as a standalone reference work for dissecting rooms and labs, and for those sampling stranded and by-caught dolphins in the field. As a companion and supplement to Anatomy of Dolphins: Insights into Body Structure and Function, this atlas will be of great interest to the scientific community, including veterinarians and biologists, as a book of reference. With a modern approach to dolphin anatomy and morphology, this atlas provides the extensive knowledge necessary to practitioners and theoretical scientists such as evolutionary biologists. The conceptual clarity, precision, and comprehensive and updated display of the topographical anatomy of the body of cetaceans in the atlas support and illustrate the authors' related work, serving as a comprehensive reference for those who are more specifically interested in the details of the anatomy and morphology of porpoises, dolphins and whales. - Offers a single reference source and useful teaching tool for visualizing the integrated body and its components - Functions as a helpful method for demonstrating the animal's anatomy prior to dissection, and for teaching topographic and comparative anatomy - Provides a unique and authoritative resource that explicitly relates the gross and microscopic anatomy of cetacean organs and tissues - The prenatal development of dolphins is largely achieved

Book The Physiology of Dolphins

Download or read book The Physiology of Dolphins written by Andreas Fahlman and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2023-11-25 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Physiology of Dolphins explains complex physiological problems of dolphins that are largely driven by technological developments of biologging tools. The book provides a collection of review chapters from leaders in the field of dolphin ecophysiology, making it essential for instructors, researchers and graduate students interested in the physiological and anatomical adaptations that make life possible for this charismatic marine mammal. Sections cover the complete physiology of the mammal and include information on the current threats for dolphins and whales from environmental pressures such as climate change, overfishing, pollution and our increasing human presence in the ocean. This is an excellent reference providing easy to follow details of the latest available research methods and technologies that is expanding the field of physiology in marine mammals. - Describes complex physiological themes such as the neural control of the dive response and how compression affects gas exchange - Includes studies of the cardiorespiratory and sensory physiology of wild dolphins and other cetacean species - Incorporates diagrams, and other visual representations to best describe these complex systems and activities

  • Author : Andy Butterworth
  • Publisher : Springer

  • ISBN : 3319469940
  • Pages : 625 pages

Download or read book Marine Mammal Welfare written by Andy Butterworth and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-06-19 with total page 625 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marine mammals attract human interest – sometimes this interest is benign or positive – whale watching, conservation programmes for whales, seals, otters, and efforts to clear beaches of marine debris are seen as proactive steps to support these animals. However, there are many forces operating to affect adversely the lives of whales, seals, manatees, otters and polar bears – and this book explores how the welfare of marine mammals has been affected and how they have adapted, moved, responded and sometimes suffered as a result of the changing marine and human world around them. Marine mammal welfare addresses the welfare effects of marine debris, of human traffic in the oceans, of noise, of hunting, of whale watching and tourism, and of some of the less obvious impacts on marine mammals – on their social structures, on their behaviours and migration, and also of the effects on captivity for animals kept in zoos and aquaria. There is much to think and talk about – how marine mammals respond in a world dramatically influenced by man, how are their social structures affected and how is their welfare impacted?
