Book Selective Fishing in Canada s Pacific Fisheries a New Direction

Download or read book Selective Fishing in Canada s Pacific Fisheries a New Direction written by Canada. Department of Fisheries and Oceans and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ability of fishermen to fish selectively and avoid or release unharmed non-target species or stocks is emerging as a fundamental requirement in developing fishing plans. This paper sets out the policy framework for selective fishing in Canada's Pacific fisheries. After an introduction on selective fishing, section two provides an overview of Canadian and global activities related to responsible fishing and outlines the context for a selective fishing policy framework. Section 3 presents objectives and strategies for selective fishing in all fisheries. Section 4 focuses on the salmon fishery and the development of selective fisheries in an experimental stage and an operational stage. The final section describes future steps to be taken to implement selective fishing practices and plans. Annexes include a glossary, a list of principles involved in a new direction for the Pacific salmon fishery, an allocation framework for Pacific salmon 1999-2005, a review of selective fishing initiatives in 1998, and a list of criteria used to evaluate selective fishing proposals.

Book New Directions in Conservation Medicine

Download or read book New Directions in Conservation Medicine written by A. Alonso Aguirre and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2012-05-28 with total page 666 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, species and ecosystems have been threatened by many anthropogenic factors manifested in local and global declines of populations and species. Although we consider conservation medicine an emerging field, the concept is the result of the long evolution of transdisciplinary thinking within the health and ecological sciences and the better understanding of the complexity within these various fields of knowledge. Conservation medicine was born from the cross fertilization of ideas generated by this new transdisciplinary design. It examines the links among changes in climate, habitat quality, and land use; emergence and re-emergence of infectious agents, parasites and environmental contaminants; and maintenance of biodiversity and ecosystem functions as they sustain the health of plant and animal communities including humans. During the past ten years, new tools and institutional initiatives for assessing and monitoring ecological health concerns have emerged: landscape epidemiology, disease ecological modeling and web-based analytics. New types of integrated ecological health assessment are being deployed; these efforts incorporate environmental indicator studies with specific biomedical diagnostic tools. Other innovations include the development of non-invasive physiological and behavioral monitoring techniques; the adaptation of modern molecular biological and biomedical techniques; the design of population level disease monitoring strategies; the creation of ecosystem-based health and sentinel species surveillance approaches; and the adaptation of health monitoring systems for appropriate developing country situations. New Directions of Conservation Medicine: Applied Cases of Ecological Health addresses these issues with relevant case studies and detailed applied examples. New Directions of Conservation Medicine challenges the notion that human health is an isolated concern removed from the bounds of ecology and species interactions. Human health, animal health, and ecosystem health are moving closer together and at some point, it will be inconceivable that there was ever a clear division.

Download or read book The Eternal Return written by Roth, Wolf M and published by Lehmanns Media. This book was released on 2008 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cultural-historical activity theory frequently is used as a framework for studying static situations statically. In this book, the authors implement Lev Vygotsky’s call for doing unit rather than element analysis by studying activity dynamically, across different spatial and temporal scales. The eternal return, that is, the continual production of change while reproducing the system, is taken as the central metaphor for a system that produces self-movement. A case study is provided of salmon enhancement in British Columbia (Canada), linking the 120-year cultural history of this activity, with the 30-year evolution of a fish hatchery that concretely constitutes the system in one of the possible ways, and the knowing and learning of individual fish culturists, which is analyzed at the time scales of five years down to the micro-evolution of individual conversations. Most importantly, the authors implement Vygotsky’s call for theorizing affect and emotion at the very heart of the activity system, showing how the eternal return allows us to under-stand the change of worker involvement and identification with the goals of their workplace.

Book Review of the State of World Marine Capture Fisheries Management

Download or read book Review of the State of World Marine Capture Fisheries Management written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2007 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the first half of the 1990s, in response to the increasing concern about many of the world's fisheries, a number of international fisheries instruments provided an impetus for countries to strengthen their fisheries management. A key step in supporting such efforts is the development of more detailed, systematic and comparable information on fisheries environments and management trends. The State of World Marine Capture Fisheries Management Questionnaire was developed by FAO in 2004 to help meet this need. The results have been grouped by region and are reported in this publication. More than a decade later, we are able to look back to see how countries responded, to examine whether more fisheries are managed and to determine whether the management tools and strategies employed have improved the overall situation in marine capture fisheries. Trends in legal and administrative frameworks, management regimes and status of marine capture fisheries are analysed for 29 countries in the Pacific Ocean and presented in this report and on the accompanying CD-ROM as an easy-to-read and informative reference for policy decision-makers, fishery managers and stakeholders.

Book Reinventing Fisheries Management

Download or read book Reinventing Fisheries Management written by T.J. Pitcher and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Judged by a dismaying track record and a consequent downturn in the reputation of fisheries scientists, fisheries management is certainly a candidate for calls for reinvention, with many of the world leaders in this area holding the view that no fishery has ever been properly understood or managed. With fisheries science in a state of flux, this extremely important book seeks a new paradigm that will place this flux of ideas in perspective and help us to choose those that will make fisheries management work. The book was planned at a symposium of over 100 fishery researchers at the Fisheries Centre, University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada and is organized into five parts: Why does Fisheries Science Need Reinventing?; New Policies; The Role of the Social Sciences; Ecology; Modelling. Carefully integrated and edited by three of the world's leading fishery scientists, this stimulating book should find a place on the shelves of all fishery scientists throughout the world. It will be an invaluable reference source to those studying fish biology, fisheries and oceanography and all those involved in fisheries policy decisions in government and university research establishments.

Book Co operative Management of Local Fisheries

Download or read book Co operative Management of Local Fisheries written by Evelyn Pinkerton and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2011-11-01 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first to consolidate information on the different routes by which these co-operative management arrangements have evolved. The authors include anthropologists, environmental planners, biologists, economists, fishery managers and tribal and governmental leaders. Their contributions examine the process of achieving co-management, the institutions created by co-management arrangements, and the benefits which result. Some of these benefits include more efficient and equitable management, less conflict between government and fishermen, and better co-operation between groups of fishermen. Co-operative Management of Local Fisheries looks at successes and failures of these arrangements for shared decision-making and offers guidelines for viable co-operative management.
