Book The Modern Percussion Revolution

Download or read book The Modern Percussion Revolution written by Kevin Lewis and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-07-17 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than eighty years have passed since Edgard Varèse’s catalytic work for percussion ensemble, Ionisation, was heard in its New York premiere. A flurry of pieces for this new medium dawned soon after, challenging the established truths and preferences of the European musical tradition while setting the stage for percussion to become one of the most significant musical advances of the twentieth century. This 'revolution', as John Cage termed it, was a quintessentially modernist movement - an exploration of previously undiscovered sounds, forms, textures, and styles. However, as percussion music has progressed and become woven into the fabric of Western musical culture, several divergent paths, comprised of various traditions and a multiplicity of aesthetic sensibilities, have since emerged for the percussionist to pursue. This edited collection highlights the progressive developments that continue to investigate uncharted musical grounds. Using historical studies, philosophical insights, analyses of performance practice, and anecdotal reflections authored by some of today's most engaged performers, composers, and scholars, this book aims to illuminate the unique destinations found in the artistic journey of the modern percussionist.

Book A Performance Guide and Analysis of William Kraft s English Suite and Rickey Tagawa s Inspirations Diabolique

Download or read book A Performance Guide and Analysis of William Kraft s English Suite and Rickey Tagawa s Inspirations Diabolique written by Curtis Moody and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 123 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The analysis of indefinitely-pitched multiple percussion solo works using standard music analysis is often difficult. The pieces lack pitches to produce melodies and harmonies, or to determine cadences. In order to provide an analysis tool using the musical materials contained in these works, Brett Woodmansee developed a “method of elements” to determine phrases by finding the greatest change of musical material from the previous phrases. In order to expand the range of compositions Woodmansee analyzed, William Kraft’s English Suite and Rick Tagawa’s Inspirations diabolique are analyzed using this alternative method. Combined with the analysis, a performance guide of the two pieces presents setup, instrumentation, edits, technical difficulties, and musical decisions.William Kraft is one of the greatest proponents of percussion music in the latter half of the 20th century. His compositions include works for solo percussion, as well as orchestral, band, and choral works. Kraft’s career included orchestral performance, solo percussion performance, composition, conducting, and teaching. Rick Tagawa published his composition Inspirations diabolique in 1965. After his one addition to the solo percussion body of work, he pursued his interest in world music. Kraft’s English Suite and Tagawa’s Inspirations diabolique are solo works for indefinitely-pitched percussion. The compositions are intermediate level pieces which allow the percussionist an opportunity to develop technical and musical facility in the multiple percussion genre, making them useful as tools with which to expand this analysis.
