Flame Structure Studies of a Lean 20 Torr H2 N2O Ar Flame Employing Molecular Beam Mass Spectrometry
Download or read book Flame Structure Studies of a Lean 20 Torr H2 N2O Ar Flame Employing Molecular Beam Mass Spectrometry written by and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this report, we present the results of our continued experimental efforts to investigate the structure of low-pressure, burner-stabilized H2/N20/ Ar flames. Coated Pt/Pt-Rh(10%) thermocouples and molecular beam sampling followed by quadrupole mass spectrometric detection (MB/MS) were employed to obtain temperature and species mole fraction profiles, respectively, in a fuel lean (Phi=0.64), 20-torr H2/N20/Ar flame. Species profiles of H2, N20, N2, H20, NO, 02, H, 0, and OH are compared to profiles generated using a detailed flame kinetic model. This provides a stringent test of the detailed chemical flame model and chemical mechanism for the H2/N20/Ar system which is presently being developed at the U.S. Army Research Laboratory to enhance the understanding of nitramine propellant combustion and decomposition. Low pressure flames, Molecular beam mass spectrometry, Flame structure studies, Lean H2/N20/Ar flames, Molecular beams, Mass spectrometry.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The results of slightly over six years of research on the direct, mass spectrometric sampling of one atmosphere flames and related high pressure systems are summarized. The empirical development of the sampling system and related problems in detection and data interpretation are outlined. The major phenomena accompanying direct, molecular-beam sampling were found to be: (1) orifice-system interaction, (2) mass separation, (3) nucleation, and (4) influence of internal energy state on fragmentation pattern. Each of these problems has been explored qualitatively and quantitatively. A number of areas of immediate application of direct sampling to practical and scientific problems are listed together with suggestions for future research. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Several fuel-rich laminar, H2/O2/N2 flames seeded with potassium salts were employed in an investigation of the thermodynamics and kinetics of electron attachment phenomena produced by molybdenum, chromium, vanadium and boron additives. Mass spectrometry, electrostatic probes, microwave resonant cavity techniques, and optical spectroscopy are used to determine negative and positive ion identites, positive ion concentrations, electron concentrations and neutral species concentrations, respectively. It is shown that addition of molybdenum-containing compounds to flames seeded with potassium causes large reductions in concentrations of potassium atoms and extensive electron attachment. The results are interpreted in terms of a homogeneous reaction mechanism involving formation of the stable species KHMoO4, MoO3( - ), and HMoO4( - ), and enthalpy changes and equilibrium constants are inferred. Chromium and vanadium compounds are found to produce much smaller effects. The corresponding heat changes and equilibrium constants for the attachment reactions postulated to be responsible for observed negative ion formations are given. The kinetics of electron attachment to boron-containing species are currently under investigation. Axial concentration profiles for negative ions, electrons, H-atoms and positive ions are taken and the results interpreted in terms of a reaction rate coefficient for the process e + HBO2 yields BO2( - ) + H. Download or read book Probing Flame Chemistry with MBMS Theory and Modeling written by and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The program objective is to establish kinetics of combustion and molecular weight growth in C3 hydrocarbon flames as part of an ongoing study of flame chemistry. Specific reactions to be studies are (1) the oxidation reactions of O and OH with C3's and (2) the growth reactions of C3H5 and C3H3 with themselves and with unsaturated hydrocarbons. Our approach combines molecular-beam mass spectroscopy (MBMS) experiments which give concentrations of stable species and free radicals in low-pressure flat flames; theoretical predictions of rate constants by thermochemical kinetics, Biomedical Quantum-RRK, RRKM, and master- equation theory; and whole-flame modeling using full mechanisms of elementary reactions. Detailed MBMS flame data are the principal results of the first nine months of the grant. Spatial profiles of temperature, area expansion ratio, and mole fraction have been mapped in two low-pressure flat flames, one fuel-lean ([phi] = 0.229) and the other fuel-rich ([phi] = 1.64) in propene/oxygen/argon. Species identities and trends suggest certain chemical pathways, but reaction theory and flame modeling are beginning to provide specific, quantitative insights into oxidation and growth chemistry. 5 refs., 23 figs., 1 tab.
