Book excerpt: Brought together here in this volume is a classic collection of satirical works from Jonathan Swift, perhaps one of the greatest satirist in the English language. While Swift is probably best known for his novel "Gulliver's Travels," he was a brilliant satirist with a cutting wit and mastery of language. His skills with the pen, which made him both famous and feared by the powerful, can be seen in "A Modest Proposal." Swift's famous essay, originally published anonymously in 1729, suggests that the poor in Ireland could best solve their problems by selling their children as food to the rich. Swift's outrageous hyperbole was used as powerful social commentary and was directed at the rich and powerful and their heartless treatment of the poor and destitute. Also included in this collection is "A Tale of the Tub," a prose parody of the moral and ethical aspects of the English religious and political life of Swift's time, which was widely misunderstood and consequently damaging to his reputation. "A Modest Proposal and Other Satires" is a collection of nine essays in total which provide a representative selection of Swift's satirical gift. This edition in printed on premium acid-free paper.

Book excerpt: A Modest Proposal is a satirical essay written and published by Jonathan Swift. Swift suggests that the impoverished Irish might ease their economic troubles by selling their children as food for rich gentlemen and ladies. This satirical hyperbole mocks heartless attitudes towards the poor, as well as Irish policy in general. In English writing, the phrase "a modest proposal" is now conventionally an allusion to this style of straight-faced satire. Swift goes to great lengths to support his argument, including a list of possible preparation styles for the children, and calculations showing the financial benefits of his suggestion. He uses methods of argument throughout his essay which lampoon the then-influential William Petty and the social engineering popular among followers of Francis Bacon. These lampoons include appealing to the authority of "a very knowing American of my acquaintance in London" and "the famous Psalmanazar, a native of the island Formosa." This essay is widely held to be one of the greatest examples of sustained irony in the history of the English language. Much of its shock value derives from the fact that the first portion of the essay describes the plight of starving beggars in Ireland, so that the reader is unprepared for the surprise of Swift's solution when he states, "A young healthy child well nursed, is, at a year old, a most delicious nourishing and wholesome food, whether stewed, roasted, baked, or boiled; and I make no doubt that it will equally serve in a fricassee, or a ragout." Readers unacquainted with its reputation as a satirical work often do not immediately realize that Swift was not seriously proposing cannibalism and infanticide. The satirical element of the pamphlet is often only understood after the reader notes the allusions made by Swift to the attitudes of landlords, such as the following: "I grant this food may be somewhat dear, and therefore very proper for Landlords, who as they have already devoured most of the Parents, seem to have the best Title to the Children." Swift extends the conceit to get in a few jibes at England’s mistreatment of Ireland, noting that "For this kind of commodity will not bear exportation, and flesh being of too tender a consistence, to admit a long continuance in salt, although perhaps I could name a country, which would be glad to eat up our whole nation without it."

Book excerpt: Differentiated book- It has a historical context with research of the time-Jonathan Swift offers us an incomparable starting point to reflect on modernity. Our work refers to several of his works and the scientific and social context that surrounds them. It would be impossible to summarize all of them, but it would also be difficult to follow our argument without remembering the argument of a work of his, apparently minor, and that, however, in a few pages crumbles his time and several of the main economic theories of the time . We refer to A Modest Proposition to prevent the children of Ireland from being a nuisance to their parents or to the country, better known as A modest proposition, which will be the way we will call it below. In a dispassionate tone, full of accounting details, the narrator writes a letter to the British royal authorities, in which he proposes that the children of the Irish poor ("a nuisance to the public") be fed until the age of one year and then sold to the gentle men, who should eat them with great pleasure on such occasions as marriages and baptisms. In the Introduction by William Alfred Eddy to Swift's works,

Book excerpt: A Modest Proposal By Jonathan Swift A book created almost 300 years ago by the creator of Gulliver's travels, maybe the most famous work of Jonathan Swift. For this cruel and unconventional proposal Swift has been several times matched with the reputation of writers such as De Sade or Lautreamont. Already in the past, when the love of a parent for children was less felt and less obvious than today this book generated chaotic and shocked reactions in a very various range of readers. The apparently sincere style used to write the book matched with the idea of cannibalism created a strong reaction not just in readers of the past but maybe more and mainly in people that decide to read this book in our age. The sense of disgust and of disappointment is something that readers can still feel when they have to deal with this work. Provocative, fierce, sharp ... Most of the critics are divided in two different factions when the conversation arrive to this book: someone see Swift and his work as a provocative way to shake aims of Irish population but for others, mainly in the past, the author was seriously promoting the horrible solution contained in his work. Created by an intelligent man often close to political speeches and political strategies this work reflect the complex point of view of a man that was a political writer and a political journalist other than a great satire creator. A man usually more careful in his works who wanted, once, allow himself to express all his disgust for an unacceptable situation. A modest proposal: for preventing the children of poor people in Ireland from being a burden to their parents or Country, and for making them beneficial to the Public. This was the complete title of this amazing book. Too long for being acceptable during the editing step it has been reduced to "a modest proposal" among the years. The book express a deep contempt for the English politic in Ireland, even if the main accent is put on this contempt the author for sure doesn't forget to complain about the weakness showed by the Irish population. The proposal contained in the book is everything except than modest, with a fierce and sometimes horrific economical point of view the author, presented in the book as a character, make a plan to solve the problem of the overpopulation among Christian Irish.

Book excerpt: I have been assured by a very knowing American of my acquaintance in London, that a young healthy child well nursed, is, at a year old, a most delicious nourishing and wholesome food, whether stewed, roasted, baked, or boiled; and I make no doubt that it will equally serve in a fricasie, or a ragoust. I do therefore humbly offer it to public consideration, that of the hundred and twenty thousand children, already computed, twenty thousand may be reserved for breed, whereof only one fourth part to be males; which is more than we allow to sheep, black cattle, or swine, and my reason is, that these children are seldom the fruits of marriage, a circumstance not much regarded by our savages, therefore, one male will be sufficient to serve four females. That the remaining hundred thousand may, at a year old, be offered in sale to the persons of quality and fortune, through the kingdom, always advising the mother to let them suck plentifully in the last month, so as to render them plump, and fat for a good table.
