This book was released on 2019-09-11 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Socio-Historical Examination of Religion and Ministry (SHERM journal) is a biannual, not-for-profit, free peer-reviewed academic journal that publishes the latest social-scientific, historiographic, and ecclesiastic research on religious institutions and their ministerial practices. SHERM is dedicated to the critical and scholarly inquiry of historical and contemporary religious phenomena, both from within particular religious traditions and across cultural boundaries, so as to inform the broader socio-historical analysis of religion and its related fields of study. The purpose of SHERM is to provide a scholarly medium for the social-scientific study of religion where specialists can publish advanced studies on religious trends, theologies, rituals, philosophies, socio-political influences, or experimental and applied ministry research in the hopes of generating enthusiasm for the vocational and academic study of religion while fostering collegiality among religious specialists. Its mission is to provide academics, professionals, and nonspecialists with critical reflections and evidence-based insights into the socio-historical study of religion and, where appropriate, its implications for ministry and expressions of religiosity.

Book excerpt: Classic Pastoral Care provides a topical arrangement of passages from classic Christian writings offering guidance on all major topics of pastoral theology. The four-volume set features writings from more than two hundred notable Christian authors--from Abelard and Ambrose to Isaac Watts and Zwingli--arranged in thirty topical sections. Volume one, Becoming a Minister, is concerned with the person and self-understanding of the caregiver. It discusses the call to the caring office, the way this inner sense of calling is affirmed in ordination, orders of ministry, set-apartness, and the shepherding metaphor. This is followed by discussions of authorization to servant ministry; the purpose of ministry; the relation of the general ministry of the whole church to the sacred or ordained ministry; the orders of diakonos, presbuteros, episkopos; women in ministry; and preparation for ministry through study and spiritual formation.

Book V K Wellington Koo and the Emergence of Modern China

Download or read book V K Wellington Koo and the Emergence of Modern China written by Stephen G. Craft and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2021-09-15 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chinese diplomat V.K. Wellington Koo (1888-1985) was involved in virtually every foreign and domestic crisis in twentieth-century China. After earning a Ph.D. from Columbia University, Koo entered government service in 1912 intent on revising the unequal treaty system imposed on China in the nineteenth century, believing that breaking the shackles of imperialism would bring China into the "family of nations." His pursuit of this nationalistic agenda was immediately interrupted by Chinese civil war and Japanese imperialism during World War I. In the 1930s Koo attempted to use international law to force western powers to honor their treaty obligations to punish Japanese expansion. Koo also participated in creating the League of Nations and later the United Nations in the hope that collective security would become reality.

Book Wellington

Download or read book Wellington written by Rory Muir and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2013-01-01 with total page 761 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Duke of Wellington was Britain's greatest soldier, whose victories turned the tide of Napoleon's conquests and played a crucial role in his downfall. Wellington went on to be a major figure in British politics, twice serving as Prime Minister. Often the centre of controversy, he was at times feted and celebrated as a national hero, at others reviled in the press and abused in the streets. He was a far more complicated man than the paragon of virtue celebrated by Victorian biographers. Rory Muir's masterly new biography, the first of a two volume set, is the result of thirty years research into the Duke of Wellington and his times. The author brings Wellington into much sharper focus than ever before, critically examining every aspect of his life from his unhappy childhood, his baptism into British and Irish politics and his remarkable successes in India, to the setbacks and triumphs of the Peninsular War. This is the first biography to address the significance of Wellington's political connections and the way they both helped and hindered his campaigns" -- jacket description.
