Book A Metallographic Study of Multiaxial Creep Fatigue Behavior in 316 Stainless Steel

Download or read book A Metallographic Study of Multiaxial Creep Fatigue Behavior in 316 Stainless Steel written by ER. de los Rios and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 19 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A metallographic examination of elevated temperature multiaxial fatigue specimens of 316 stainless steel was conducted to identify the type of damage and other microstructural changes that occurred during testing. The work hardening which takes place at the beginning of the test is associated with the development of either a cell or a maze dislocation structure. Two main factors contribute to the flow stress, that is, dislocation and carbide precipitation hardening. Dislocation hardening prevails, but precipitation hardening, which increases with testing time, becomes significant for long hold-time and low-strain range tests. Fatigue cracks are predominantly transgranular. However, intergranular cracks have been observed in hold-time specimens and are related to grain-boundary sliding and grain-boundary precipitation. The fatigue fracture is a three stage process, the initial stage (Stage I) is crystallographic, extending for one to three grains. The intermediate stage (Stage II) is dominated by striations, with the exception of some featureless facets in biaxial specimens. The final stage (Stage III) is a dimple type fracture (tension fracture), beginning at shorter crack lengths in the hold-time and high-strain range specimens. Striation spacing calculations give approximate life estimates in low-cycle fatigue.

Book Low Cycle Fatigue Behavior of Types 304 and 316 Stainless Steel at LMFBR Operating Temperature

Download or read book Low Cycle Fatigue Behavior of Types 304 and 316 Stainless Steel at LMFBR Operating Temperature written by CF. Cheng and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 10 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fully reversed, axial strain-controlled low-cycle fatigue tests with and without tension holdtime have been conducted in air in the temperature range of 806 to 1202 F and at a strain rate of 4 x 10-31 on Types 304 and 316 stainless steel after various initial heat treatments. The test results have been supplemented by metallographic and scanning electron microscopy investigations. Prior heat treatment has a greater effect on specimens tested at 1050 F than on those tested at 1202 F and a greater effect on Type 304 than on Type 316. The introduction of tension holdtimes decreases the cyclic life of both materials and causes the mode of failure to change from transgranular to intergranular. Much of the above fatigue behavior can be qualitatively understood on the basis of the supplemental metallographic results.

Book Fatigue and Durability of Metals at High Temperatures

Download or read book Fatigue and Durability of Metals at High Temperatures written by S. S. Manson and published by ASM International. This book was released on 2009 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From concept to application, this book describes the method of strain-range partitioning for analyzing time-dependent fatigue. Creep (time-dependent) deformation is first introduced for monotonic and cyclic loading. Multiple chapters then discuss strain-range partitioning in details for multi-axial loading conditions and how different loading permutations can lead to different micro-mechanistic effects. Notably, the total-strain method of strain-range partitioning (SRP) is described, which is a methodology that sees use in several industries. Examples from aerospace illustrate applications, and methods for predicting time-dependent metal fatigue are critiqued.

Book PROBAMAT 21st Century Probabilities and Materials

Download or read book PROBAMAT 21st Century Probabilities and Materials written by G.N. Frantziskonis and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 615 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are numerous technological materials - such as metals, polymers, ceramics, concrete, and many others - that vary in properties and serviceability. However, the almost universal common theme to most real materials is that their properties depend on the scale at which the analysis or observation takes place and at each scale "probabilities" play an important role. Here the word "probabilities" is used in a wider than the classical sense. In order to increase the efficiency and serviceability of these materials, researchers from NATO, CP and other countries were brought together to exchange knowledge and develop avenues for progress and applications in the st 21 century. The workshop began by reviewing progress in the subject area over the past few years and by identifying key questions that remain open. One point was how to observe/measure material properties at different scales and whether a probabilistic approach, at each scale, was always applicable and advantageous. The wide range of materials, from wood to advanced metals and from concrete to complex advanced composites, and the diversity of applications, e.g. fatigue, fracture, deformation, etc., were recognized as "obstacles" in identifying a "universal" approach.

Book Analysis of Type 316 Stainless Steel Behavior Under Fatigue

Download or read book Analysis of Type 316 Stainless Steel Behavior Under Fatigue written by R. Gomuc and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A phenomenological approach, already used for other materials, is applied for the prediction of the behavior of 316 stainless steel under fatigue, creep, or combined fatigue-creep loadings. The approach is based on the reduction of either the fatigue limit or the creep strength due to damage accumulation. For multilevel loading, an interaction parameter is introduced to account for the interaction effect between two different loading levels. Some particular aspects concerning the application of the procedure are discussed and the life predictions are compared wit those obtained by other techniques. The essential characteristic of the proposed approach is to provide a reasonably good prediction of life for the material subjected to the prescribed loadings using material constants which are determined through minimal experimental data.

Book Creep and Ageing Interactions in Biaxial Fatigue of Type 316 Stainless Steel

Download or read book Creep and Ageing Interactions in Biaxial Fatigue of Type 316 Stainless Steel written by FA. Kandil and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A high-strain, biaxial (tension/torsion) fatigue study has been conducted on Type 316 stainless steel at 550°C. The tests were under strain control, some with dwell periods up to 10 min at the positive strain peaks. The deformation and fracture behavior under these conditions revealed a strengthening effect due to the fast carbide precipitation which extended life in some cases. Also it is shown that the form of the multiaxial fatigue failure criterion, modes, and directions of cracking were functions of hold time. The multiaxial cyclic stress-strain curve is best described in terms of shear stress and strain components on the maximum shear plane for a given hold time.

Book High Temperature Fatigue Behaviour of Austenitic Stainless Steel

Download or read book High Temperature Fatigue Behaviour of Austenitic Stainless Steel written by Hugo Wärner and published by Linköping University Electronic Press. This book was released on 2018-12-20 with total page 49 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The global energy consumption is increasing and together with global warming from greenhouse gas emission, create the need for more environmental friendly energy production processes. Higher efficiency of biomass power plants can be achieved by increasing temperature and pressure in the boiler section and this would increase the generation of electricity along with the reduction in emission of greenhouse gases e.g. CO2. The power generation must also be flexible to be able to follow the demands of the energy market, this results in a need for cyclic operating conditions with alternating output and multiple start-ups and shut-downs. Because of the demands of flexibility, higher temperature and higher pressure in the boiler section of future biomass power plants, the demands on improved mechanical properties of the materials of these components are also increased. Properties like creep strength, thermomechanical fatigue resistance and high temperature corrosion resistance are critical for materials used in the next generation biomass power plants. Austenitic stainless steels are known to possess such good high temperature properties and are relatively cheap compared to the nickel-base alloys, which are already operating at high temperature cyclic conditions in other applications. The behaviour of austenitic stainless steels during these widened operating conditions are not yet fully understood. The aim of this licentiate thesis is to increase the knowledge of the mechanical behaviour at high temperature cyclic conditions for austenitic stainless steels. This is done by the use of thermomechanical fatigue- and creepfatigue testing at elevated temperatures. For safety reasons, the effect of prolonged service degradation is investigated by pre-ageing before mechanical testing. Microscopy is used to investigate the microstructural development and resulting damage behaviour of the austenitic stainless steels after testing. The results show that creep-fatigue interaction damage, creep damage and oxidation assisted cracking are present at high temperature cyclic conditions. In addition, simulated service degradation resulted in a detrimental embrittling effect due to the deterioration by the microstructural evolution.

Book High cycle Fatigue Behavior of Type 316 Stainless Steel at 593 C

Download or read book High cycle Fatigue Behavior of Type 316 Stainless Steel at 593 C written by and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The available low- and high-cycle fatigue data on Type 316 stainless steel at 593 to 600°C have been combined and analyzed to provide a preliminary strain-life correlation. This correlation was then reduced by the appropriate safety factors to a design curve and compared with the ASME T-1420-1B curve. The comparison indicates that significant increases in allowable fatigue cycles should be realized when the present study is concluded.
