Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memoir of the Life and Character of Thomas Wilson, Esq.: Treasurer of Highbury College The reception which this work has met with from that portion of the periodical press, the conductors of which have deemed it worthy of any particular notice, has been gratifying to the author. An higher encouragement has been derived from the fact, which has fallen under his own knowledge, that in more than one instance an effect so decidedly beneficial has been produced on the reader's mind, as to lead, by the blessing of God, to important practical results. It is a source of peculiar gratification to the author that the publication of this Memoir has contributed, in some degree, to diffuse the spirit of expansive liberality which led his honoured father to con secrate a large amount of property to the building of houses devoted to God; and he cannot refrain from publicly ex pressing the delight with which he has observed, that since the work appeared, a new and more powerful impulse has been given, among the Congregational Nonconformists of London, to the erection of chapels in those large suburban towns which are rapidly springing up in all directions round the vast metropolis of our country. To his own mind nothing ap pears more clearly, than the urgent imperative duty, devolving especially upon those who by birth, residence, or other cir cumstances, are immediately connected with the metropolis, to adopt the most active measures and to raise the most liberal contributions in order to multiply large and commodious chapels in the constantly extending inhabited region around that already immense city. He will venture here to record his own firm, deliberate conviction, that if the English Independents desire in the most effectual manner to advance the highest interest of their country, by promoting the eternal welfare of their fellow-country men, they will combine their energies to carry forward this work in the populous cities and towns of England. By erecting fifty appropriate edifices in London. And fifty more in the larger towns, consecrated to the public worship of God, and the faith ful preaching of the Gospel, we should, he is firmly persuaded, more effectually promote the cause of our Lord and Saviour than by any other means. Book excerpt: Susan Whyman draws on a hidden world of previously unknown letter writers to explore bold new ideas about the history of writing, reading and the novel. Capturing actual dialogues of people discussing subjects as diverse as marriage, poverty, poetry, and the emotional lives of servants, The Pen and the People will be enjoyed by everyone interested in history, literature, and the intimate experiences of ordinary people. Based on over thirty-five previously unknown letter collections, it tells the stories of workers and the middling sort - a Yorkshire bridle maker, a female domestic servant, a Derbyshire wheelwright, an untrained woman writing poetry and short stories, as well as merchants and their families. Their ordinary backgrounds and extraordinary writings challenge accepted views that popular literacy was rare in England before 1800. This democratization of letter writing could never have occurred without the development of the Royal Mail. Drawing on new information gleaned from personal letters, Whyman reveals how the Post Office had altered the rhythms of daily life long before the nineteenth century. As the pen, the post, and the people became increasingly connected, so too were eighteenth-century society and culture slowly and subtly transformed.

Book Guilty Thing

Download or read book Guilty Thing written by Frances Wilson and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2016-04-07 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: **LONGLISTED FOR THE BAILLIE GIFFORD PRIZE FOR NON-FICTION 2016** **New York Times Book Review, Times Literary Supplement and Guardian Best Books of 2016** 'Life for De Quincey was either angels ascending on vaults of cloud or vagrants shivering on the city streets.' The last of the Romantics, Thomas De Quincey is a name synonymous with scandal. Modelling his character on Coleridge and his sensibility on Wordsworth, De Quincey took over the latter's former cottage and turned it into an opium den. Here, in the throes of his high, he nurtured his growing hatred of his former idols and wrote the notorious and fascinatingly strange essay 'On Murder Considered as one of the Fine Arts'. Despite never achieving the literary deification of his contemporaries, his narrative style – scripted and sculptured emotional memoir – was to inspire generations of writers: Dickens, Dostoevsky, Virginia Woolf. James Joyce knew whole pages of his work off by heart and he was arguably the father of what we now call psychogeography. Guilty Thing tells the riches-to-rags story of a dazzlingly complex and troubled figure, whose life was lived on the run, and affords De Quincey the literary biography he deserves.
