  • Pages : 346 pages

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gannett was an American geographer who is described as the "father of mapmaking in America." He was the chief geographer for the United States Geological Survey essentially from its founding until 1902. He served as geographer of the U.S. censuses of 1880, 1890, and 1900, as well as the Philippine, Cuban, and Puerto Rican censuses. During this time, he became interested in place names. He was motivated to publish this alphabetical compilation of the origins of approximately 10,000 place names because it embodies so much local and general history. Gannett's efforts to resolve difficulties caused by proliferation, duplication, and confusion of place names led to the establishment of the U.S. Board of Geographic Names in 1890. He served as the board's chairman until 1910. He was also a founding member and president of the National Geographic Society.

Book Names and Their Histories

Download or read book Names and Their Histories written by Isaac Taylor and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-17 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Names and Their Histories: A Handbook of Historical Geography and Topographical Nomenclature The favour accorded for more than thirty years to successive editions of a volume entitled Words and Places has encouraged me to undertake another work on the same subject, but written on a different plan, and with a different intention. The object of the former book was to show how an acquaintance with the etymology of local names may be of use to students of such sciences as Ethnology, Mythology, or History. Regret has frequently been expressed that I did not venture beyond the definite plan I had proposed to myself, and especially that I had left several classes of local names without explanation. The object of the present book is to supply some of these omissions by giving an account of certain names, especially those of philological interest or of geographical importance, whose origin or etymology has been ascertained, and then tracing historically the changes which have taken place in their forms or in their geographical significance. Such names, for example, as America, Austria, Scotland, Saxony, Africa, or Peru have ow a very different application from that which they originally possessed, and the history of their migrations, extensions, or transformations is a subject of investigation not destitute of interest.
