Book A Manual of Exercises for the Correction of Speech Disorders Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Manual of Exercises for the Correction of Speech Disorders Classic Reprint written by May Kirk Scripture and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-21 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Exercises for the Correction of Speech Disorders We, who speak the English language, can no longer be reproached for our inattention to the subject of speech disorders; for not only during the past year have the Boards of Education in many large cities made the much needed advanced step of appointing Directors of Speech Improvement in the Public Schools, but all over the country numerous other authorities in Speech and Music have already started movements along the lines of diction. Picked teachers are being sent to the speech experts to study their methods in this field, and to carry back this special knowledge to the various school systems. This movement deserves the highest commendation, for should not the "glory of the English tongue" be upheld? Refinement of dress, of person, is always desirable; ideas of cleanliness and neatness are more and more respected. Young men spend much thought on the shape of their collars and the shade of their ties, and young women on the thousand and one little things that go to make up an attractive appearance; but are they always so particular about the shapes and shades of their vowels or consonants, that their speech may be as attractive as their persons? Slovenly language should no more be accepted than slovenly manners. It has long been recognized that the average American voice is shrill and the speech careless compared to the voice and speech of an Englishman. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Faults of Speech: A Self-Corrector and Teachers' Manual His little work supplies a want of which I have been frequently reminded dur ing my professional career. In revising the Principles of Speech and Vocal Physiology for a new edition in 1863, a section of the book was devoted to the Cure of Stammer ing; and in another section - the Diction ary of Sounds - reference was made under each consonant to the defects to which the element was subject: but a complete separate treatise on the faults or speech has not hitherto been published. I am glad to be able still, to add to my professional publications one which, I hope and believe, will prove not the least useful of. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Graduated Exercises in Articulation The sets of exercises in articulation on the following pages were drawn up pri marily for the use of my own students, and are not intended to be practised at first without an instructor. The most superficial observer of our common speech cannot but be struck with the undue prevalence of slovenly articula tion, not only on the part of the younger generation, but also amongst those charged with the duties of teaching and public speaking. Our manner of speech, that most vital element of our education, has been allowed, as Mr. Henry James said in a recent address at Bryn Mawr, to run wild, to shift, as we say, all for itself, to stumble and flounder, through mere adventure and accident, in the com mon dust of life, to pick up a living, in fine, by the wayside and the ditch. Download or read book A Series of Lessons in Articulation and Lip Reading written by Richard Elliott and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-22 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Series of Lessons in Articulation and Lip-Reading: Containing Full Instructions for Teaching the Various Sounds of Spoken Language, With Copious Exercises It is desirable in the earlier lessons that the teacher's mouth should be on a level with the pupil's eyes, or as nearly so as possible. And it will be an advantage if the position of the pupil is shifted from time to time, so that he may see the teacher's face at every angle sufficient for recognising the words. In regard to instruments for use in teaching, the only ones the present writer has found advantageous are little flat bone spoons, such as are sold for a penny each as salt spoons, a sheet of tissue paper hung up by the corners on a level with the child's mouth, and a good sized hand-mirror, large enough to admit of both the teacher's and pupil's face to be seen at once therein.
