Book excerpt: This report presents the findings of a qualitative study to investigate the reasons why young people are not participating in local government and to consider possible options to address this aspect of the political process. It examines the different ways in which young people view and participate in local politics and the factors that shape and influence their individual perspectives. The study also gave the opportunity for the youth included in the sample to generate their own ideas and solutions for engaging greater youth participation in local politics.

Book Youth and Political Participation

Book excerpt: Learning about politics and life as a citizen is part of the transition to adulthood. During this stage young people in most Western democracies are introduced to political processes and issues, as well as a range of political activities including voting and participation in social movements. But young people make this transition differently. The articles in this Book explore a range of ways that young people participate politically and also discuss those who are not ‘active citizens’.

Book A Question of Commitment

Download or read book A Question of Commitment written by Thomas Waldock and published by Wilfrid Laurier Univ. Press. This book was released on 2020-04-09 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the adoption of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (1989), commentators began to situate the evolution of the status of children within the context of the “property to persons” trajectory that other human rights stories had followed. In the first edition of A Question of Commitment, editors R. Brian Howe and Katherine Covell provided a template of analysis for understanding this evolution. They identified three overlapping stages of development as children transitioned from being regarded as objects to subjects in their own right: social laissez-faire, paternalistic protection, and children’s rights. In the social laissez-faire stage, children are regarded as objects, and largely as the property of parents. In the paternalistic protection stage, children are seen as vulnerable and in need of protection. The children’s rights stage lays emphasis on children as rights-bearers, as individuals in their own right with entitlements. In this second edition, new essays assess the extent to which children’s rights have been incorporated into their respective areas of policy and law. The authors draw conclusions about what the situation reveals about the status of children in Canada. Overall, many challenges remain on the pathway to full recognition and citizenship.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Youth participation is not an end in itself, but a means of achieving positive changes in young people's lives and of building a better society, in recent years a growing number of initiatives promoting and strengthening youth involvement at different levels - international, regional, national and local - have emerged. New tools have been created for different actors working in this area. One such tool is the revised European Charter on the Participation of Young People in Local and Regional Life, adopted in May 2003 by the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe, it is a tool to support young people, youth workers, youth organisations and local authorities in promoting and enhan¬cing meaningful youth participation at local and regional level across Europe. The manual "Have your say!" answers questions such as "What is real youth participation? What do I do with the charter? Why should I be interested in this document?" and is targeted at youth organisations and young people who want to have their say as well as at governmental representatives who want to increase active youth participation.

Book Participatory Budgeting in the United States

Download or read book Participatory Budgeting in the United States written by Victoria Gordon and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-10-04 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although citizen engagement is a core public service value, few public administrators receive training on how to share leadership with people outside the government. Participatory Budgeting in the United States serves as a primer for those looking to understand a classic example of participatory governance, engaging local citizens in examining budgetary constraints and priorities before making recommendations to local government. Utilizing case studies and an original set of interviews with community members, elected officials, and city employees, this book provides a rare window onto the participatory budgeting process through the words and experiences of the very individuals involved. The central themes that emerge from these fascinating and detailed cases focus on three core areas: creating the participatory budgeting infrastructure; increasing citizen participation in participatory budgeting; and assessing and increasing the impact of participatory budgeting. This book provides students, local government elected officials, practitioners, and citizens with a comprehensive understanding of participatory budgeting and straightforward guidelines to enhance the process of civic engagement and democratic values in local communities.
