Book A Letter to Her Majesty the British Queen Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Letter to Her Majesty the British Queen Classic Reprint written by Thomas Jefferson Sutherland and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Letter to Her Majesty the British Queen Of those who were implicated in the late revolutionary movements in, the Canadas, the writer and publisher of this volume was the first put upon trial, with the intention on the part of the British government that he should have been the first to be executed. Why he escaped will be understood after a perusal of these pages. There are now about 150 citizens of the United States, who were captured by the military forces of Great Britain in the Canadas during the late revolutionary movements, still held by that government as prisoners of state. They have been sent to Van Dieman's Land, one of the British penal colonies, where they have been reduced to the condition of common felons; and thrust into a convict station with thieves, robbers, burglars and others of the vilest of the overflowings of the prisons of the the British empire - without sufficient food or necessary clothing they are being compelled to labor for unreasonable hours at the most servile employment: and made subject to the lash and other severities, unusual to be inflicted by civilized people. Those men, having been induced to believe that a hearty struggle was about to be made by the Canadians for liberty, with a generous motive, volunteered their services to aid them in their efforts; and so doing became prisoners. By the publication of this volume, it is hoped to bring the attention of our own government, as well as that of Great Britain, to the condition of those, our unfortunate fellow-citizens; and that the British government may then be induced to set them at liberty. Should it prove one of the means of bringing about the desired result, the sole object of the publication will have been attained. Aside from the matters which bear upon the object expressed, this volume will be found to contain expositions of legal questions, which give it value, as a book of reference; particularly, on trials by Court Martial. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Queen Elizabeth: Various Scenes and Events in the Life of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth was Of majestic and graceful form, a little above the medium height, neither too high nor too low, as she herself naively re marked. She had hair of a colour between pale auburn and yellow, black eyes, which were beau tiful and lively, a fair, clear complexion, a Roman nose, a small mouth with thin, firmly set lips, and a forehead broad and high. Her face was striking and commanding rather than delicately beautiful, the countenance of one born to rule. She pos sessed many personal attractions and no one could be more charming and gracious upon occasion than this mighty Princess of the Royal House of Tudor, with that slow, sweet smile of hers and her quick, ever-ready wit. Sir Francis Bacon says, She was tall Of stature, of comely limbs, and excellent feature in her countenance; majesty sat under veil of sweet ness, and her health was sound and prosperous. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Queen's Answer: To the Letter From the King to His People No! I cannot, upon reflection, bring myself to use the name of her majesty in this way. A pamphlet has been pub lished, entitled A letter from the king to his people. It bears date from Carlton Palace. It has the King's arms at the head of it. 'it is signed george. The writer addresses the people as his subjects. In short, the thing is sent forth with all the circumstances calculated to induce us to believe, that the King is the real writer; and, then, at the close, it is declared, that it is a literary fiction, put forth with the most loyal intentions. When I first heard of and hadjust seen, this fiction, I conceived the design to give it answer in the some form; but, when I came to read the thing, I found it so horrible a performance, that I could not bring myself to put the design in execution. However, as the pam phlet contains what the enemies of the queen appear to think the King's case; and as it purports to be a true history of this family quarrel, I think it right to notice all the parts of it, on which common sense and common decency can suffer them selves to dwell for a moment; for a great deal of it is so very foolish, so glaringly absurd, as well as so foul, as to set all commentary at defiance; and indeed, it seems impossible. Of England Perhaps you may wonder to receive a letter Without a name on a matter of so great importance from a friend who formerly used to tell you the truth before your face: but the times we live in now will not jus tify a man in exposing himself to danger, without seeing any good arising from it. The two last court days I sought for an opportunity at Hirschholm to Speak a few words to you in private, but I found it was impossible. You might have Ob served that if you had been at all attentive: but I found you SO much engaged with another Object that I could not approach near enough to you to make you under stand what I wanted, and I thought it inadvisable to go to Hirschholm on purpose to pay you a Visit. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Letters of Queen Victoria, Vol. 1 of 3: A Selection From Her Majesty's Correspondence Between the Years 1837 and 1861; 1837 1843 Of Parliament, and of various political memoranda dealing with home, foreign, and colonial policy; among these are a few drafts of Her Majesty's replies. There are volumes concerned with the affairs of almost every European country; with the history of India, the British Army, the Civil List, the Royal Estates, and all the complicated machinery of the Monarchy and the Constitution. There are letters from monarchs and royal personages, and there is further a whole series of volumes dealing with matters in which the Prince Consort took a special interest. Some of them are arranged chronologically, some by subjects. Among the most interesting volumes are those containing the letters written by Her Majesty to her uncle Leopold, King of the Belgians, and his replies.1 The collection of letters from and to Lord Melbourne forms another hardly less interesting series. In many places Queen Victoria caused extracts, copied from her own private Diaries, dealing with important political events or describing momentous interviews, to be inserted in the volumes, with the evident intention of illustrating and completing the record. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life of Her Most Gracious Majesty the Queen, Vol. 2 of 2 The next day the royal party visited Stamford town, from which the Mayor afterwards sent Prince Albert the gift of a pair of Wellington boots, as a sample of the trade of the place. The drive extended to the ruins of another manor-house which, Lady Bloomfield heard, was built by the Cecils for a temporary resort when their house of Burghley was swept. The Queen and the Prince planted an oak and a lime, not far from Queen Elizabeth's lime. The festivities ended with a great dinner and ball, at which the Queen did not dance. Most of the company passed before her chair of State on the dais, as they do at a drawing-room. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Queen Victoria as I Knew Her After my book was completed, the same con fidential relations continued. This gave me such unusual opportunity of observing Her Majesty's qualities of mind and heart, that I am tempted to place on record so much of what I saw as may without impropriety be told. What she was as a Sovereign will be for historians to tell; it is only of the woman as she became revealed to me that I would speak, using, where I may, her own words, as I find them in looking back upon the very voluminous correspondence with which I was honoured through many years. The endearing qualities of the Queen have been acknowledged by all who knew her. They secured for her what might be truly called the affectionate devotion of the men and women of her Court. I belonged to the outer world, but by no one were these qualities more warmly felt than by myself; for to the end.
