Book excerpt: The collection consists of a letter written on 25 March 1847 from Vera Cruz, Mexico, and signed R. H. A. The letter was written to the soldier's brother, William. After lamenting the inefficiency of the mail system, the soldier detailed the United States' artillery siege on the town of Vera Cruz just four days before the siege's end. "We have yet only begun to fight," he wrote, "and I write while the air is full of destructive missiles." The author discussed Vera Cruz's crumbling homes and "invulnerable" castle, and the "spirited and patriotic" fight the Mexicans put up to defend their city at all costs. Additionally, the soldier recounted his belongings, which, presumably, had been lost at sea, as well as his plan to recover his monetary assets upon his return. The letter ended with a warning to his brother not to alert anyone to the fact that there were 17,000 men waiting to march on Vera Cruz.
