Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Latin Grammar for Schools This book is in the main an abridgment for school purposes of my larger Latin Grammar, but the abridgment is very unequal, some pans being reproduced with slight omissions, some parts bem g largely reduced, and others again being rewritten. Under the last head fall especially chaps. I and ii of Book I, and chap. Vi of Book II. Of the last-named chapter, part, particularly 132, contains an analysis which is, I think, new and interesting. I have added an English trans lation of the Examples in almost the whole of the Syntax. It Will be found that in some cases I have given the ordinary English equivalent, whilst in others I have aimed rather at explaining the Latin construction. Three Appendices are new, viz. Those on Metre, on Grammatical and Rhetorical terms, and on Latin authors. Some changes in arrangement have been made (e. G. As regards degrees of comparison, and Numerals) to suit ordinary usage. The Index has been made fuller than is usual m a book of this class - so full, that it may not be unimportant to observe that the book is really intended not for reference, but for study: The lists are not exhaustive, the statements of occur rence or non-occurrence of forms or expressions must not be taken too literally, but only as approximations to the truth, with especial regard to the classical authors and' usages of recognized authority in schools and many of the rarer usages are not noticed at all, but left to be picked up in the student's own reading, or obtained, when needed, from a dictionary. Download or read book A Latin Grammar for the Use of Schools Classic Reprint written by I. N. Madvig and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2019-02-12 with total page 518 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Latin Grammar for the Use of Schools This edition is issued to meet the increasing demand for the Grammar, which is springing up in all parts of this country. It is substantially the translation of the Rev. Mr. Woods; but in the revision of the translation, great freedom has been used, especially in making such verbal changes as seemed to promote perspicuity and help the learner to an instant understanding of the author's mean ing. A translator who is not perfectly familiar with both the languages with which he has to do, is in danger of occasionally transferring a word from his dictionary to his page, without first submitting it to the scrutiny of his own thoughts; and where infelicities of expression arise from such a cause, they are more likely to catch the eye of a stranger than of the translator himself. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Latin Grammar for Schools and Colleges: Founded on Comparative Grammar Our aim has been to prepare, within moderate com pass, a complete Latin grammar, to be used from the beginning of the study of Latin until the end of a college course. The whole has been composed from our own point of view, and is, in all essentials, a new and independent work. But we have used freely the standard authorities, as well those of the older scho lastic as of the newer critical and scientific schools. In several points, particularly the topical arrangement of the Syntax, we have followed the outline sketched a few years ago by Professor Allen, of the University of Wisconsin. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Copious Latin Grammar, Vol. 1 of 2: With Alterations, Notes and Additions It has been necessary to make many alterations of the original, to accommodate it to the difference between the German and English languages. But these are not the only changes. The Author's style is exceedingly heavy and from a strange suppo sition that a work of this kind could be put into the hands of beginners, he often enters into super fluons and tiresome repetitions as, therefore, this is not a work ofimagination or taste, the style has been freely re-modelled, and all those parts which seemed useless have been suppressed the transla tion, though still long, has been thus reduced by as many as a hundred pages. For the same reason the Author's Prefaces have been omitted, as they merely contain remarks upon the necessity of clearly explaining the principles and terms of Gram mar, and its object and extent, which are repeated in the bod y of the work. The Index has also been retrenched of all those particulars which could as well be learnt from the table of Contents.
