Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This IMA Volume in Mathematics and its Applications PARTICULATE FLOWS: PROCESSING AND RHEOLOGY is based on the proceedings of a very successful one-week workshop with the same title, which was an integral part of the 1995-1996 IMA program on "Mathematical Methods in Materials Science." We would like to thank Donald A. Drew, Daniel D. Joseph, and Stephen L. Passman for their excellent work as organizers of the meeting. We also take this opportunity to thank the National Science Foun dation (NSF), the Army Research Office (ARO) and the Office of Naval Research (ONR), whose financial support made the workshop possible. A vner Friedman Robert Gulliver v PREFACE The workshop on Particulate Flows: Processing and Rheology was held January 8-12, 1996 at the Institute for Mathematics and its Applications on the University of Minnesota Twin Cities campus as part of the 1995- 96 Program on Mathematical Methods in Materials Science. There were about forty participants, and some lively discussions, in spite of the fact that bad weather on the east coast kept some participants from attending, and caused scheduling changes throughout the workshop. Heterogeneous materials can behave strangely, even in simple flow sit uations. For example, a mixture of solid particles in a liquid can exhibit behavior that seems solid-like or fluid-like, and attempting to measure the "viscosity" of such a mixture leads to contradictions and "unrepeatable" experiments. Even so, such materials are commonly used in manufacturing and processing.

Book Inviscid Incompressible Flow

Download or read book Inviscid Incompressible Flow written by Jeffrey S. Marshall and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2001-06-25 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive, modern account of the flow of inviscid incompressible fluids This one-stop resource for students, instructors, and professionals goes beyond analytical solutions for irrotational fluids to provide practical answers to real-world problems involving complex boundaries. It offers extensive coverage of vorticity transport as well as computational methods for inviscid flows, and it provides a solid foundation for further studies in fluid dynamics. Inviscid Incompressible Flow supplies a rigorous introduction to the continuum mechanics of fluid flows. It derives vector representation theorems, develops the vorticity transport theorem and related integral invariants, and presents theorems associated with the pressure field. This self-contained sourcebook describes both solution methods unique to two-dimensional flows and methods for axisymmetric and three-dimensional flows, many of which can be applied to two-dimensional flows as a special case. Finally, it examines perturbations of equilibrium solutions and ensuing stability issues. Important features of this powerful, timely volume include: * Focused, comprehensive coverage of inviscid incompressible fluids * Four entire chapters devoted to vorticity transport and solution of vortical flows * Theorems and computational methods for two-dimensional, axisymmetric, and three-dimensional flows * A companion Web site containing subroutines for calculations in the book * Clear, easy-to-follow presentation Inviscid Incompressible Flow, the only all-in-one presentation available on this topic, is a first-rate teaching and learning tool for graduate- and senior undergraduate-level courses in inviscid fluid dynamics. It is also an excellent reference for professionals and researchers in engineering, physics, and applied mathematics.

Book Sedimentation and Sediment Transport

Download or read book Sedimentation and Sediment Transport written by A. Gyr and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is evident, that for a number of ecological and technical problems in rivers and lakes a better knowledge of sediment transport and sedimentation is needed together with the ability to predict and simulate sediment behaviour. On the other hand, a stagnation of research in these topics could be observed in the last decades. At the Symposium an attempt was made to present new results in mathematics and natural sciences relevant for the sediment problem. New strategies were discussed to tackle the complexity of the problem. Basic theoretical research and laboratory experiments alone are incomplete without a feedback from field observations and measurements. For that reason well-known researchers from both basic and engineering sciences were invited. Turbulence, non-local phenomena, stability, interaction, feedback systems, self-organization, two-phase flow and chaotic processes, numerical simulations as well as measurement techniques and field results were the keywords of the Symposium. This proceedings are a good source for those interested in the state of the art.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: AI!, in the earlier conferences (Tokyo, 1986; Atlanta, 1988, Melbourne, 1991; and Hong Kong, 1992) the response to the call for presentations at ICES-95 in Hawaii has been overwhelming. A very careful screening of the extended abstracts resulted in about 500 paper being accepted for presentation. Out of these, written versions of about 480 papers reached the conference secretariat in Atlanta in time for inclusion in these proceedings. The topics covered at ICES-95 range over the broadest spectrum of computational engineering science. The editors thank the international scientific committee, for their advice and encouragement in making ICES-95 a successful scientific event. Special thanks are expressed to the International Association for Boundary Elements Methods for hosting IABEM-95 in conjunction with ICES-95. The editors here express their deepest gratitude to Ms. Stacy Morgan for her careful handling of a myriad of details of ICES-95, often times under severe time constraints. The editors hope that the readers of this proceedings will find a kaleidoscopic view of computational engineering in the year 1995, as practiced in various parts of the world. Satya N. Download or read book Vortex Methods written by Georges-Henri Cottet and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2008-04-24 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vortex methods have matured in recent years, offering an interesting alternative to finite difference and spectral methods for high resolution numerical solutions of the Navier Stokes equations. In the past three decades, research into the numerical analysis aspects of vortex methods has provided a solid mathematical background for understanding the accuracy and stability of the method. At the same time vortex methods retain their appealing physical character, which was the motivation for their introduction. This book presents and analyzes vortex methods as a tool for the direct numerical simulation of impressible viscous flows. It will interest graduate students and researchers in numerical analysis and fluid mechanics and also serve as an ideal textbook for courses in fluid dynamics.

Book Small Scale Modeling and Simulation of Incompressible Turbulent Multi Phase Flow

Download or read book Small Scale Modeling and Simulation of Incompressible Turbulent Multi Phase Flow written by Stéphane Vincent and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-10-06 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book provides basic and recent research insights concerning the small scale modeling and simulation of turbulent multi-phase flows. By small scale, it has to be understood that the grid size for the simulation is smaller than most of the physical time and space scales of the problem. Small scale modeling of multi-phase flows is a very popular topic since the capabilities of massively parallel computers allows to go deeper into the comprehension and characterization of realistic flow configurations and at the same time, many environmental and industrial applications are concerned such as nuclear industry, material processing, chemical reactors, engine design, ocean dynamics, pollution and erosion in rivers or on beaches. The work proposes a complete and exhaustive presentation of models and numerical methods devoted to small scale simulation of incompressible turbulent multi-phase flows from specialists of the research community. Attention has also been paid to promote illustrations and applications, multi-phase flows and collaborations with industry. The idea is also to bring together developers and users of different numerical approaches and codes to share their experience in the development and validation of the algorithms and discuss the difficulties and limitations of the different methods and their pros and cons. The focus will be mainly on fixed-grid methods, however adaptive grids will be also partly broached, with the aim to compare and validate the different approaches and models.
