Book Russian Grammar

Download or read book Russian Grammar written by John Dyneley Prince and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-12 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Russian Grammar: For Class and Reference Use, a Progressive Method of Learning Russian The living Slavonic languages are Russian, Polish, Czecho-Slovak, Serbo-Croatian, Slovene, Wendish and Bulgarian, all so closely related that a knowledge of any one of them is a key to an easy comprehension of all the others. The Russian language is difficult and at first sight, irregular, and yet many obstacles disappear when the student becomes familiar with the phonetics and the grammatical basis. Russian is hard to acquire at first, mainly owing to the somewhat confusing phonetics; viz., the unlikeness of many sounds to those of English and the changes in spelling of numerous forms, when certain sounds are combined. Added to this is the fact that the accent does not fall regularly on any one syllable, but moves in the inflected forms of the same word so arbitrarily, that the stress of each form must be learned rather by association than by memorizing. In the present grammar, the compiler has tried to lead the learner more briefly than has been done in some other grammars of Russian, by progressive steps through the mazes of Russian morphology. Most of the examples given are intended for reference and not to be learned by heart at the outset. No attempt has been made to expound the higher style, poetical metre, etc., as these can be learned only after the beginner is well equipped grammatically. It is absolutely necessary to train students first in the accidence, teaching them to recognize and use, both by sight and sound, the inflections and conjugations. This has been attempted in the present work by means of exercises in Russian at the close of each lesson. Download or read book Syntax in Functional Grammar written by G. David Morley and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2000-09-01 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This well-illustrated book outlines a framework for the analysis of syntactic structure from a perspective of a systematic functional grammar. In oart, the book goes back to the grammar's "scale and category" roots, but now with the aim of presenting how a descriptive framework illustrating how the analysis of the syntactic structure can reflect the meaning structure. The contents are divided into four sections. Section one gives a brief overview of systematic grammar, including the linguistic system, context of situation, and language fractions. Developing the lexicogrammar, section two considers formal units and their classes, but the principal focus is on section three, which covers the role of units as elements of structure. Section four discusses areas of structural complexity and concludes with several refinements to the analysis format.

Book A Reference Grammar of Russian

Download or read book A Reference Grammar of Russian written by Alan Timberlake and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2004-01-22 with total page 524 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes and systematizes all aspects of the grammar of Russian: the patterns of orthography, sounds, inflection, syntax, tense-aspect-mood, word order, and intonation. It is especially concerned with the meaning of combinations of words (constructions). The core concept is that of the predicate history: a record of the states of entities through time and across possibilities. Using predicate histories, the book presents an integrated account of the semantics of verbs, nouns, case, and aspect. More attention is paid to syntax than in any other grammars of Russian written in English or in other languages of Western Europe. Alan Timberlake refers to the literature on variation and trends in development, and makes use of contemporary data from the internet. This book will appeal to students, scholars and language professionals interested in Russian.
