Book Symphony no 6 in F major op 68

Download or read book Symphony no 6 in F major op 68 written by Ludwig van Beethoven and published by Courier Corporation. This book was released on 1998-01-01 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beethoven's profound love of nature, nourished by his solitary rambles through the countryside, provided the wellspring for his sixth symphony. Five years in the making, the "Pastorale" particularly reflects his feelings for rustic pleasures, and performers and listeners rejoice in a work more nuanced and delicate than the composer's typically intense symphonies. The music is reproduced here from an authoritative edition, with bar-numbered movements and ample margins at the bottom of each score page for notes and analysis. Ideal for study in the classroom, at home, or in the concert hall, this affordable high-quality, conveniently sized volume will be the edition of choice for music students and music lovers alike.

Book Oscar Wilde and Classical Antiquity

Download or read book Oscar Wilde and Classical Antiquity written by Kathleen Riley and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017-11-24 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few authors of the Victorian period were as immersed in classical learning as Oscar Wilde. Although famous now and during his lifetime as a wit, aesthete, and master epigrammist, Wilde distinguished himself early on as a talented classical scholar, studying at Trinity College Dublin and Oxford and winning academic prizes and distinctions at both institutions. His undergraduate notebooks as well as his essays and articles on ancient topics reveal a mind engrossed in problems in classical scholarship and fascinated by the relationship between ancient and modern thought. His first publications were English translations of classical texts and even after he had 'left Parnassus for Piccadilly' antiquity continued to provide him with a critical vocabulary in which he could express himself and his aestheticism, and a compelling set of narratives to fire his artist's imagination. His debt to Greece and Rome is evident throughout his writings, from the sparkling wit of society plays like The Importance of Being Earnest to the extraordinary meditation on suffering that is De Profundis, written during his incarceration in Reading Gaol. Oscar Wilde and Classical Antiquity brings together scholars from across the disciplines of classics, English literature, theatre and performance studies, and the history of ideas to explore the varied and profound impact that Graeco-Roman antiquity had on Wilde's life and work. This wide-ranging collection covers all the major genres of his literary output; it includes new perspectives on his most celebrated and canonical texts and close analyses of unpublished material, revealing as never before the enduring breadth and depth of his love affair with the classics.

Book The Fairy Tales of Oscar Wilde

Download or read book The Fairy Tales of Oscar Wilde written by Dr Jarlath Killeen and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2013-04-28 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Oscar Wilde's two collections of children's literature, The Happy Prince and Other Stories (1888) and A House of Pomegranates (1891), have often been marginalised in critical accounts as their apparently conservative didacticism appears at odds with the characterisation of Wilde as an amoral aesthete. In this, the first full-length study of Wilde's fairy tales for children, Jarlath Killeen argues that Wilde's stories are neither uniformly conservative nor subversive, but a blend of both. Killeen contends that while they should be read in relation to a literary tradition of fairy tales that emerged in nineteenth century Europe; Irish issues heavily influenced the work. These issues were powerfully shaped by the 'folk Catholicism' Wilde encountered in the west of Ireland. By resituating the fairy tales in a complex nexus of theological, political, social, and national concerns, Killeen restores the tales to their proper place in the Wilde canon.
