Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: David has no greater wish than to explore the mountains behind his new home in North Carolina and as he does he finds a wonder never dreamed of, the Phoenix. The Phoenix introduces David to an endless list of his friends from mythology and in the process opens David's eyes to the wide world both the unseen world and seen world. In the unseen world David and the Phoenix share many adventures all the while a scientist is trying to capture the Phoenix to prove to the world that the bird is real. The phoenix takes David on "educational field trips" to meet sea monsters, fauns and other creatures. Plus they hatch a hysterical plot to scare off an over eager scientist from the phoenix's trail. David learns some valuable lessons about life, one is that nothing remains the same as one grows up. The other is... well perhaps you should read the book yourself and find your own lessons within the pages. A well written story, "David and the Phoenix" has no particular time setting so that it could very well be placed in current time. It brings back to me memories of times when life was much simpler, more pleasant and without the problems we as adults face. It's a story of childhood and the dreams that children of every age share and which we all to soon leave behind. Of course, there is the traditional fiery death of the phoenix in the story.

Book Citizen Cash

Download or read book Citizen Cash written by Michael Stewart Foley and published by Hachette UK. This book was released on 2021-12-07 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A leading historian argues that Johnny Cash was the most important political artist of his time Johnny Cash was an American icon, known for his level, bass-baritone voice and somber demeanor, and for huge hits like “Ring of Fire” and “I Walk the Line.” But he was also the most prominent political artist in the United States, even if he wasn’t recognized for it in his own lifetime, or since his death in 2003. Then and now, people have misread Cash’s politics, usually accepting the idea of him as a “walking contradiction.” Cash didn’t fit into easy political categories—liberal or conservative, Republican or Democrat, hawk or dove. Like most people, Cash’s politics were remarkably consistent in that they were based not on ideology or scripts but on empathy—emotion, instinct, and identification. Drawing on untapped archives and new research on social movements and grassroots activism, Citizen Cash offers a major reassessment of a legendary figure.

Writing Childbirth reveals the contradictory messages women receive about childbirth, their conflicting expectations about it, and how writing and technology contribute to and reconcile these messages and expectations.

Set on five continents and spanning decades, We Two Alone traces the arc and evolution of the Chinese immigrant experience. Book The Ruined Walled Castle Garden

Download or read book The Ruined Walled Castle Garden written by Mary Gilliland and published by . This book was released on 2020-08-30 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poetry. By turns mystical and realist, Mary Gilliland's intensely musical poems consider global apocalypse--'our course set for the destitute sunset'--but also celebrate the generative power of creativity. With preternatural empathy, she enters fascinating sensibilities--Virginia Woolf, Nikola Tesla--and sings 'the troubled music' of history. Gilliland's sinewy, nuanced poems understand earth--and consciousness--as gardens that no walls or enchantments can protect. Her vision is profound, enduring.--Alice Fulton Mary Gilliland's THE RUINED WALLED CASTLE GARDEN casts a sidelong glance at the human comedy in various times and places. Here a 'stubbled saint' stumbles into our contemporary world; the rush of life stops with a milennial 'where-were-you party.' Marked by compression, surprise, originality of language, a confident and eloquent voice cuts to the essential.--Mary Crow Like the apothecarist Keats, Mary Gilliland's poetry wells up from the healing force of unheard melodies. Her tensile lyric and fluent narrative grasp the sweet otherness in life, which is 'Eve's radical helplessness' to endure and bear intimate witness to both change and permanence. THE RUINED WALLED CASTLE GARDEN is a radiant testimony--and a triumph--of an unerring ear I deeply cherish.--Ishion Hutchinson

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Trumansburg Ships. The honor of naming these towns has been ascribed to Dewitt Clinton, who, probably fresh from academic honors, with a mind well stored with classic literature sought to perpetuate the names of Greek and Roman heros, and to found anew the. Cities made famous by Cicero and Homer, hence from pent-up Utica to Niagara we are severely clas sic. This entire territory was held o-r owned by individuals or com panics Who had acquired title by purchase or grant to the number of thirty nine, and.in size ranging from four hundred and twenty eight acres, the smalie'st, to two hundred and ten thousand acres the largest. Many of these lands reverted to the state after the Revolution on ao count of the disloyalty of the owners to the new republic; many others were subsequently sold for taxes, and when the state resolved to set aparta portion of its territory to recompense, in part at least, its sol diers, all that portion now covered by the counties of'cayuga, Seneca, Schuyler, Tompkins and Wayne, twenty-eight townships in all, was selected for this purpose and designated as the Military Tract. While we do not question the motives which prompted this action on the part 'of the State, yet it had no idea of the value of these lands; a few thou sand acres of wilderness, more or less, in those days was as nothing. The only. Inhabited portion of the State at that time was a narrow strip of country on either side of the Hudson, with a few detatchedsettlements, on the Mohawk and the Military Posts on the lakes Ou tario and Erie. When the lands, were thrown open for selection Cay uga Lake was practically farther from Albany than is Puget Sound to-day, and the beneficiaries were slow to take advantage of their rights by actual settlement. They dreaded the journey of weeks through the trackle'ss forests, and the reports brought back by some intrepid but homesick and discouraged explorer was not encouraging. To be sure, they said, the land is fair to look upon, but to get there with wives and little ones was a long and perilous journey beset with dangers, the stealthy Indian whose heart was still sore from the strug gle which had deprived him of his inheritance, wild beasts and venom ous reptiles, almost impassable swamps with their fever-laden miasmas were terrors which required the stoutest heart to brave; the soldier who had periled life and limb in many a hard fought battle of the Revolution, slept upon his rights, and allowed this goodly heritage to pass away from him and his generation forever. And so it was that land warrants were bought by speculators for a mere song, the grantors prefering to take their chances of making a living among the rocks and mountains of river counties than to take as a gift a square mile of land in what became within their memory the Garden of the State. There were many noble exceptions however and it is but justice to them to say that they were better than their fellows. Their sturdy manhood, independence of character, a disposition to break away from the narrow limits of civilization and seek for themselves new homes in the far west prompted them to brave the dangers, and many if not most of them lived to see the fulfillment of their belief in the future of their country, they lived to see their homes hewn from the wilderness blossom like the rose, the rich virgin soil responded to every call upon it, and the State's bounty made for them a com petency, and laid the foundation of the wealth of their descendants whose social and financial standing to-day marks the wisdom of their. Book The Daughter s Return

Download or read book The Daughter s Return written by Caroline Rody and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2001-04-12 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Daughter's Return offers a close analysis of an emerging genre in African-American and Caribbean fiction produced by women writers who make imaginative returns to their ancestral pasts. Considering some of the defining texts of contemporary fiction--Toni Morrison's Beloved, Jean Rhys's Wide Sargasso Sea, and Michelle Cliff's No Telephone to Heaven--Rody discusses their common inclusion of a daughter who returns to the site of her people's founding trauma of slavery through memory or magic. Rody treats these texts as allegorical expressions of the desire of writers newly emerging into cultural authority to reclaim their difficult inheritance, and finds a counter plot of heroines' encounters with women of other racial and ethnic groups running through these works.
