This book was released on 2023-11-20 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this captivating journey through Argentina's rail history, López, Waddell y Martínez present an illuminating narrative spanning 158 years. This translated edition, originally published in Spanish as Historia del ferrocarril en Argentina, offers global readers a unique insight into the country's rail evolution. Navigating previously uncharted historical terrain, this book addresses gaps in prior works. Prior to the 2007 edition, no comprehensive account covered Argentina's railways. Authors broke free from politicized narratives, fostering academic railway historiography. This edition, fortified by a robust bibliography, presents an authentic portrayal of railways' transformative role. Structured into six pivotal periods, the book unveils shifting railway policies. From pragmatic beginnings to private sector involvement, State regulation, and nationalization, each era reflects policy changes. Beyond factual accuracy, the book delves into the influence of public policy on railways. Authors navigate complexities of policy choices and socio-economic impact, offering multi-dimensional insights into Argentina's history. Paddy Farrell's translation ensures resonance in English. Collaborative efforts with authors ensure precision and clarity. Valuable archival photos illustrate each chapter, enriching the reader's experience. The updated bibliography facilitates further exploration. A History of the Railways in Argentina highlights the crucial role of the railway system in shaping Argentina's development and economy. Its absence underscores the challenges faced in modern times. The authors invite readers to uncover Argentina's rail story, bridging language and culture to connect with global history.

Book British Owned Railways in Argentina

Download or read book British Owned Railways in Argentina written by Winthrop R. Wright and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2014-09-01 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the nineteenth century, British-owned railways grew under the protection of an Argentine ruling elite that considered railways both instruments and symbols of progress. Under this program of support for foreign enterprise, Argentina had by 1914 built the largest railway network in Latin America. During the first decades of the twentieth century, the railways were successful in following a policy of calculated disregard for Argentine interests in general. However, following the end of World War I, the British economic empire began to decline and Argentine economic nationalism grew. A number of popularistic political movements incorporated economic nationalism into their platforms, and even among the ruling elite there were signs of increasing nationalistic sentiment. Although most studies of economic nationalism have emphasized the importance of the middle-class Radical party in the rise of xenophobia, Winthrop R. Wright's study shows that antiforeign economic nationalism was not entirely a reaction to the conservative elite. Between 1932 and 1938 the nationalistic programs of General Agustin Justo's government—basically a conservative regime—led the British interests to decide to sell their holdings. The British govemment had arrived at a position of supporting the economic withdrawal of the large British-owned firms long before Juan D. Perón appeared on the political scene. Perón combined traditional Argentine economic nationalism with his own scheme to gain power over all elements in Argentina. His solution to the railway problem, although more dramatically executed, did not differ greatly from that of the conservative Justo. Perón purchased the railways outright in 1947–1948, but his use of nationalism was in reality covering his own inability to outbargain Britain and the United States following the conclusion of World War II.

Book British Railways in Argentina 1860 1948

Download or read book British Railways in Argentina 1860 1948 written by H. R. Stones and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book is the first comprehensive account of the former British-owned broad, standard and metre gauge railways in Argentina. It traces the growth of these railways for the earliest beginnings in 1860 until they were nationalized in 1948. At their height, British Railways in Argentina represented one of the largest investments of British capital in a foreign country, about 55 billion pounds in today's values. At the end of the 19th century, they accounted for 81% of the total railway mileage in Argentina and even by 1948 after a significant expansion of State owned railroads, still accounted for 57% of the total. This book provides a clear and detailed survey of the 17 British companies that were originally involved and their gradual amalgamation and co-ordination. The book is not intended to be a complete treatise on this subject but it provides an excellent introduction and survey of the field and it is hoped that it will stimulate further research by other historians. Covers early pioneers, locomotives and rolling stock, permanent way, bridges and tunnels, signaling, telegraphs and telephone train control, as well as brief discussion of each of the railways. Illustrated with black and white photos, diagrams and charts. With maps, rosters, list of officers, list of ocean-going ships connected to the railways, station maps, gradient profile, and bibliography." --Descripción del editor.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lewis examines the complex combinations of British and Argentine forces involved in the rapid development of modern Argentina after its former pastoral and parochial socio-economic structure was superseded by the formation of a modern republic, which was largely financed by external sources and made it one of the most dynamic and prosperous countries of the mid and late 19th century. His work demonstrates the conflicting, often contradictory, expectations of the parties concerned, and how these divergent expectations and preconceptions were successfully harmonised and evolved.

Book Handbook of South American Governance

Download or read book Handbook of South American Governance written by Pia Riggirozzi and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-12-14 with total page 729 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Governance in South America is signified by strategies pursued by state and non-state actors directed to enhancing (some aspect of) their capabilities and powers of agency. It is about the spaces and the practices available, demanded or created to ‘make politics happen’. This framework lends explanatory power to understand how governance has been defined and practiced in South America. Pía Riggirozzi and Christopher Wylde bring together leading experts to explore what demands and dilemmas have shaped understanding and practice of governance in South America in and across the region. The Handbook suggests that governance dilemmas of inequitable and unfulfilled political economic governance in South America have been constant historical features, yet addressed and negotiated in different ways. Building from an introduction to key issues defining governance in South America, this Handbook proceeds to examine institutions, actors and practices in governance focusing on three core processes: evolution of socio-economic and political justice claims as central to the demands of governance; governance frameworks foregrounding particular issues and often privileging particular forms of political practice; and iterative and cumulative processes leading to new demands of governance addressing recognition and identity politics. This Handbook will be a key reference for those concerned with the study of South America, South American political economy, regional governance, and the politics of development.

Download or read book Between Interests and Law written by Thomas Hale and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2015-08-07 with total page 431 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We could not have a global economy without a system to resolve commercial disputes across borders, but the international regime that performs this key role bears little resemblance to other institutions underpinning the global economy. A hybrid of private arbitral institutions, international treaties, and domestic laws and courts, the regime for commercial dispute resolution shows that effective transborder institutions can take a variety of forms. This book offers the first comprehensive social scientific account of this surprisingly effective regime. It maps and explains its evolution since the Industrial Revolution, both at the global level and in the United States, Argentina, and China. The book shows how both political economy approaches and socio-legal theories have shaped institutional outcomes. While economic interests have been the chief determinants, legal processes have played a key role in shaping the form institutions take. The regime for commercial dispute resolution therefore remains between interests and law.
