Book excerpt: Excerpt from Our Firemen: The History of the Pittsburgh Fire Department, From the Village Period Until the Present Time The History of the Firemen of the City of Pittsburgh is a continuous record of brave deeds and of self sacrificing devotion to the good of all. That history extends over more than thre6- quarters of a century, during which the struggling village has grown to a great and commanding city, with more glowing furnaces and a greater output of iron, steel, and glass than any other municipality in the country. Her wealth has come through the refining influences of fire; yet so excellent have been the precautions taken, so willing and so intelligent have been the services rendered by those who made it their duty to keep the flames of industry confined to their legitimate vises, that the city now stands among the first of those in the country rated by insurance companies as safe. Once, it is true, the baptism of a terrifying misfortune came, but it was the natural result of a village outgrowing itself, and in the end proved rather a blessing than a curse. The fascination which attends fires, however destructive they may be, in a large manner appertains to a recital of their history. The pride with which persons read of deeds of heroism, is amply gratified in perusing the records of the firemen of what is no longer the "Smoky City," but the "Gas City." The story of how the old bucket brigade gave place to the hand engine, and then the steam engine, each moved by fearless and enthusiastic volunteers, is a romance in itself. The details of the magnificent organization of the present trained and advisably officered and disciplined force of paid firemen, will prove a revelation to many thousands of readers. For it is true that comparatively few persons know anything of the methods or the personnel of the present Bureau of Fire, of the Department of Public Safety. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Our Firemen: A Record of the Faithful and Heroic Men Who Guard the Property and Lives in the City of Detroit, and a Review of the Past, Giving the History of the Fire Department Since the Early Settlement of the City Time was when the fire engine companies in any city were, to a large extent, important social organizations, with more or less of influence in political afiairs, and a general interest and participation in all details of the general welfare. To-day all this is changed. The art of fighting fire is a specialty, and the Fire Department of Detroit is one of the most extensive and one of the best equipped organizations of the kind in existence. Every member of the department is a specialist, whose skill and courage is backed by an absolute singleness of purpose - the protection of lives and property for the citizens, who are their employers. The Detroit Fire Department, exceptionally favored by the presence of an esprit dc corps beyond criticism, has won a record that is without a blemish as to its loyalty, its vigilance and its skill, and with such a record it has won the right to a practical, permanent and sincere testimonial, in the bestowal of which all citizens may participate. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Complete History of the Boston Fire Department: Including the Fire-Alarm Service and the Protective Department, Fro, 1630 to 1888 HE information for the History of the Boston Fire Department has been very difficult to obtain, owing to the unsatisfactory manner in which the records have been' left. In fact, there is no register of events made by the department in existence, the data pre vious to 1840 being scattered over numerous sources. In the task of research, I have given the care and patience the subject demanded, and trust I have succeeded in combining into one volume all the important matters in relation to the department that heretofore have been distrib uted through hundreds. The location of the various engines, hose carriages, and ladder-trucks, and the companies attached to each, have been traced, as far as it has been possible to do so by the existing records, from their organization up to the date of closing this history, except from 1822 to 1860, at which time the membership became so large (each company having from fifty to one hundred and fifty mem bers on the roll-book) that to mention all their names would occupy a large amount of space, and would be of no great value, as they can be obtained at the office of the Board of Fire Commissioners. I have therefore deemed it sufficient to mention only the officers. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
