Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Winterthur Museum’s richly illustrated history of British and American fabrics made or used from 1700–1850 is a visual reference for designers and a definitive contribution to textile studies. From slipcovers that belonged to George Washington, to bedhangings described by Harriet Beecher Stowe, Delaware’s Winterthur Museum holds some of the finest cotton and linen textiles made or used in America and Britain between 1700 and 1850. One of the fastest growing and potentially most lucrative trades in the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, on the forefront of developments in science and engineering, chemistry and technology, the textile industry is a fascinating lens into international trade relations and cultural exchange over nearly two centuries. Printed Textiles is a major update to the classic text published by Winterthur in 1970—a sourcebook compiled by celebrated curator Florence Montgomery that detailed all aspects of the fabrics’ lifespan, from their design and method of manufacture to their use and exchange value. Linda Eaton, Director of Collections and Senior Curator of Textiles, updates the classic with a particular focus on furnishing fabrics—referred to as “furnitures.” Building on research that has come to light since 1970 and benefiting from the technical and scientific expertise of the conservators and scientists at Winterthur, Eaton presents a thorough and sweeping study enriched by the diverse approaches to material culture today. With hundreds of beautifully photographed samples—engagingly contextualized with iconic figures in American history including Betsy Ross and Benjamin Franklin—this significant addition to textile scholarship allows for a full appreciation of these fascinating fabrics. Printed Textiles is destined to become an essential reference for interior designers, fashion and textile design students, conservators, collectors, and anyone with an interest in the textile industry.

Book The First Hundred Years of European Textile printing

Download or read book The First Hundred Years of European Textile printing written by Walter Endrei and published by Akademiai Kiads. This book was released on 1998 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Technical inventions show slow but massive infiltration from east to west throughout the first fourteen centuries.. Until the 15th century, Western European technology may be said to have been less advanced than that of other Old World regions. The transfer of Far-eastern know-how continued in modern times, and among the latecomers textile-printing had a major impact as a primer of the Industrial Revolution. The fast and bright colors of chintz elicited the Indian craze in fashion, causing a permanent shortage of cotton-yarn ending up in the invention of spinning machines. It took up to a hundred years until textile printing established itself in Europe and - in accordance with the general trend - led to the mechanization of the process by Th. Bell's famous roller-printing equipment (1783). In contrast to earlier transfer-stories this one took place in the lime-light of historical documents.

Book A History of Dyed Textiles

Download or read book A History of Dyed Textiles written by Stuart Robinson and published by MIT Press (MA). This book was released on 1969 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The literature upon textile dyeing technique, including the tie-dye and batik methods, is widely scattered in a large number of periodicals and books, many of which are no longer available or do not appear in English. This book offers a concise history of man's attempts to dye, and pattern by dyeing, the textiles he made from the raw materials available to him. Despite the conditions reflected in an early papyrus which stated that the "hands of the dyer reek like rotting fish and his eyes are overcome by weariness, " the development of dyeing techniques persisted from earliest known civilizations to the present day. As man discovered new natural fibers, and later synthetic fibers, so he invented new dyes and dyeing methods.Dyeing became a prosperous trade and the concern of governments, with the result that technical and social innovation began to develop more quickly. This development is described here in considerable detail.Sections are devoted to the many forms of tie-dye and batik practiced in various parts of the world from early times. Since this book, in common with its companion volume, is intended as a source book for students preparing special studies on dyed textiles, an exceptional feature is the provision of a number of comprehensive appendices of information for further research.
