Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of French LiteratureHE lack of a convenient and yet comprehensive history of French literature, beyond the range of skeleton outlines or compendiums of facts, has long been apparent from experience to the present writer. On the other hand, excellent works in French, such as those of Brunetiere or of M. Lanson, are written from a standpoint unfamiliar to the English-speaking reader or student, and take too much for granted. M. Lamson's book is, perhaps, the best one-volume history of French literature in existence, but foreigners often find it difficult to handle. An effort is here made to meet the needs of readers in a work going beyond simple outlines, yet not pretending to specialisation in every period a thing which is impossible for one man now that we are, of necessity, either mediaevalists or moderns. The book might, perhaps, more fittingly be called a literary history of France, inasmuch as the relations have been emphasised of literature and social environment, and the Latin writings of the Middle Ages have been included. Accuracy has, of course, been sought as far as possible in view of the wide range of the subject. Yet the author does not aspire, as some do, to the merit of an absolutely independent judgment on every topic. On the contrary, he considers it the duty of the composer of a synthesis to rely, to a reasonable degree, on those who have spent months or years on individual writers whom he must perforce treat summarily. He sets himself down unhesitatingly as a pickpurse of another's wit the authorities from whom he has readily drawn will, it is hoped, be found accounted for in the bibliography.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the French Novel, Vol. 2: To the Close of the 19th Century Thirdly, it would be impossible to deal with the subject, save in an absurdly incomplete fashion, without discussing living persons. To doing this, in a book, I have an unfashionable but unalterable objection. The productions of such persons, as they appear, are, by now established custom, proper subjects for reviewing in accordance with the decencies of literature, and such reviews may sometimes, with the same proviso, be ex tended to studies of their work up to date. But even these latter should, I think, be reserved for very exceptional cases. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of French Literature, Vol. 1: From Its Origin to the Renaissance This latter thought leads us to a consideration which has more to do with geography than with history; or at least with geography as one description and subdivision of history. But we suppose that it is altogether unnecessary to dwell upon the importance of connecting every author and every literary production with the country in which he or it has been produced. To read the work of a German as we should read the work of an Italian, ignoring the features in each which are attributable to the sky beneath which they were born, and the scenery amidst which their ideas have taken shape, would be to read with closed eyes, and a mind wilfully insensible to one of the greatest allurements of literature. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of French Literature The fourth edition of this book (1892) was printed from third, with corrections, not inconsiderable in number, if individu ally of no great significance; but in view of a possible further demand it seemed, for more reasons than one, desirable to recast the book materially for the next issue. In the first place, the appearance, also at the Clarendon Press, of Mr. Toynbee's Specimens q/ 01d Franck, gave me an Opportunity of omitting the illustrative extracts in the first part of the present volume, and so gaining a substantial amount of space. These extracts had originally been included by me not so much out of predilection for them, as because, in the absence of any book in which English readers were presented with anything of the kind, they seemed indispensable. But they were something of an anomaly; and I took the first Opportunity of suggesting to the Delegates of the Clarendon Press that, as the need was now elsewhere and better supplied, my own makeshift had better go. I am much obliged to them for the promptitude with which they at once met my wishes as to recasting the book. Book A History of French Literature

Download or read book A History of French Literature written by William Albert Nitze and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-15 with total page 816 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of French Literature: From the Earliest Times to the Great War The present History of French Literature, intended both for the general reader and for students, does not aim to be exhaus tive. It is divided into three parts: Medieval, Renaissance and Modern; and within these parts it emphasizes in turn the chief literary movements and writers, leaving minor tendencies and figures out of consideration or mentioning them only inci dentally. Mere lists of names and dates, valuable as they are for reference, belong rather to bibliography than to literary his tory as such. Thus our aim has been to give a connected ao count oi the main currents of French literature from the earliest times down to the present day. In this attempt we have had several further considerations to guide us. In the first place, the book is written primarily for American and English readers. The one key to literary treasures is not erudition but sympathy. Needless to say, we would instill in our readers a liking for French literature; but such sympathy will come only through an appreciation of the French, as distinguished from the anglo-saxon, point of view. Hence the introductory chapter on the Spirit of French Letters and, in the body of the book, the frequent references to what appear to be dominant French traits. Another result of this method is the attention we give to the historical and social background. Whether we have succeeded or not, we have consistently tried to depict for each age the historical and social elements that produced it; briefly of course, with the ex pectation that the reader will complete the outline by reference to works dealing directly with these subjects. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Specimens Of French Literature From Villon To Hugo: Selected And Edited T un origin of this book has been described in the Preface of the Short History of French Literature (c larendon Press), to which it is intended to form a companion. I need not here weary the reader by indicating at length the various objects I have had before me in the compilation. Among these, complete illustration of the beauties of any particular author has, it is needless to say, found no place, much less collection of my own favourite pieces. It has occasionally been necessary, for the sake of completing the panorama, to draw on what some people may not think the best work of individual writers. To make the whole a sufficient tableau of the various achievements of French literature from the literary point of view has been the main thing considered. Must emphasise the words from the literary point of view, ' because from any other the allotment of 3pace may seem oepricious. It has also to be remembered that some kinds of literature, such as prose fiction and drama, especially the latter, lend themselves with difliculty to the purpose. For instance, Racine is undoubtedly a greater name in French literature than Alfred de Musset. But Racine wrote in astyle which has few variations, and which is peculiarly difficult to exhibit in those variations except at great length. For the present purpose therefore a single extract suflices Again, Musset is, according to some, a greater name than Gautier, according to none, perhaps, a less. But Gautier was master of a variety of forms which are very different from each other and can be well illustrated, all being im portant as instances of the powers of the language: while Musset was more confined in range, and even within that range (as in his incomparable Proverbes) cannot be always shewn by sample at all. These are some of the conside rations which impose on the compiler of such a book as this. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of French Literature: From the Oath of Strasburg to Chanticler During several centuries these national and religious poems were orally transmitted from generation to generation until Charlemagne became the principal hero, his legend absorbing all others, and in the tenth century was born the chanson de gate of truly French character. A number of these chansons de geste were inspired by the oral traditions circulating during the Merovingian period, others were ih spired by the old Cantilenes. Our chansons de geste, there fore, says Leon Gautier, are military and not clerical, and owe nothing to certain Latin chronicles from which it is believed by some they have arisen. He tells us that the Chromque do Turpin is posterior to the first chansons de giants. The Chronique do Turpin and most of the analogous legends are the works of some rhetorician of the monasteries who copied without intelligence and without animation our first chansons de geste. F. Scholle, also asserts that the poems had for a long time been preserved by oral tradition before having been written, and that the various readings of the diflerent compilations are due partly to the intervention of the jongleurs and not solely to the copyists. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History French Literature, Vol. 2: From the Classical Renaissance Until the End of the Reign of Louis XIV The mighty flood of new ideas, inventions, restorations, emancipations of thought and belief, which flowed in upon the human mind as soon as the Renaissance had broken down the accumulated obstructions of the Middle Ages, was not permitted to advance without many a check and hindrance. The jealousy of scholasticism, which saw the very foundations of its pseudo-ancient learning undermined; the hatred of the Church, whose power and influence were threatened by the revindication of reason and private judgment; the tyranny of constituted authorities, who were not slow to catch the contagion of fear, and listened eagerly to the timid counsels of their advisers - these, as we have seen, set their faces against every manifestation and development of the spirit of innovation, and succeeded only too often in their crusade of suppression. Of all the engines employed in this war against light and liberty the most effective was found in the Society of Jesus, which, by a decree of Parliament, I was authorised to open its schools and lecture-rooms independently of tho Universities.
