Download or read book Seeing Red written by Mark Cronlund Anderson and published by Univ. of Manitoba Press. This book was released on 2011-09-02 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first book to examine the role of Canada’s newspapers in perpetuating the myth of Native inferiority. Seeing Red is a groundbreaking study of how Canadian English-language newspapers have portrayed Aboriginal peoples from 1869 to the present day. It assesses a wide range of publications on topics that include the sale of Rupert’s Land, the signing of Treaty 3, the North-West Rebellion and Louis Riel, the death of Pauline Johnson, the outing of Grey Owl, the discussions surrounding Bill C-31, the “Bended Elbow” standoff at Kenora, Ontario, and the Oka Crisis. The authors uncover overwhelming evidence that the colonial imaginary not only thrives, but dominates depictions of Aboriginal peoples in mainstream newspapers. The colonial constructs ingrained in the news media perpetuate an imagined Native inferiority that contributes significantly to the marginalization of Indigenous people in Canada. That such imagery persists to this day suggests strongly that our country lives in denial, failing to live up to its cultural mosaic boosterism.

Book Making National News

Download or read book Making National News written by Gene Allen and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2014-01-31 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For almost a century, Canadian newspapers, radio and television stations, and now internet news sites have depended on the Canadian Press news agency for most of their Canadian (and, through its international alliances) foreign news. This book provides the first-ever scholarly history of CP, as well as the most wide-ranging historical treatment of twentieth-century Canadian journalism published to date. Using extensive archival research, including complete and unfettered access to CP’s archives, Gene Allen traces how CP was established and evolved in the face of frequent conflicts among the powerful newspaper publishers – John Ross Robertson, Joseph Atkinson, and Roy Thomson, among others – who collectively owned it, and how the journalists who ran it understood and carried out their work. Other major themes include CP’s shifting relationships with the Associated Press and Reuters; its responses to new media; its aggressive shaping of its own national role during the Second World War; and its efforts to meet the demands of French-language publishers. Making National News makes a substantial and original contribution to our understanding of journalism as a phenomenon that shaped Canada both culturally and politically in the twentieth century.

Download or read book A History of Canadian Journalism 1908 Classic Reprint written by Canadian Press Association and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-18 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Canadian Journalism, 1908 The Committee wishes, too, to express its thanks to Mr. H. C. Bell for exceedingly valuable assistance in correcting and revising the proofs. The promise of the late Hon. J. I. Tarte to contri bute an article on the French Press was frustrated by the hand of death, and to this extent the book is in complete. One other phase of Canadian journalism which is left for a future historian is a sketch of the Parliamentary Press Galleries. The Committee also had prepared a Chronology of the Canadian Press, covering the entire period from 1752 to 1908, but this grew to such voluminous proportions that it was found impossible to include it in the present book. Book Behind the Headlines

Download or read book Behind the Headlines written by Cecil Rosner and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2012 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Canadian investigative journalism has brought down governments, held powerful interests to account, infiltrated criminal networks, and exonerated the wrongly accused. Behind the Headlines presents the exciting history of investigative journalism in Canada in an account spanning from the nation's earliest newspapers through to the present day. Drawing on numerous case studies and examples, Cecil Rosner, a journalist with more than 35 years of experience, analyzes the evolution of investigative journalism in Canada and explores the development of specific practices within the context of changing social and historical forces. Rather than working through a straightforward chronology, Rosner uses a topic-based approach exploring wide-ranging and thought-provoking issues such as public broadcasting, commercialization of the press, alternative media, ethics, and the impact of technology. Highlighting key players and stories such as the sponsorship scandal and the Mulroney "Airbus Affair," Behind the Headlines provides fresh insight into this previously undocumented history. A new Preface to the paperback edition brings the book up to date, offering a current perspective on the shift from old to new media and ongoing efforts for media outlets to find financially sustainable revenue models. After the collapse of the Canwest empire and the rise of ProPulica and WikiLeaks, the turbulent media landscape is taking on a new form. What implications does this have for investigative journalism, not just in Canada, but around the world?
