Book The History of North America

Download or read book The History of North America written by W. Bennett Munro and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-03 with total page 562 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of North America: Canada and British, North America The history of the United States is so interwoven with the history of Canada that every American must possess a working knowledge of the progress made by the Dominion if he would properly understand many of the important phases of the development of the United States. It is, however, from the Canadian and not the American standpoint that the account of the history of the British possessions in North America must be viewed if one is to have a correct estimate of the reciprocal influences exerted by the United States of America and the Dominion of Canada and a fair judgment of the policies and achievements of these two great governments. These statements will not meet with denial from either intensive or extensive students. Both classes of scholars will admit, with more or less readiness, the importance of a knowledge of Canadian history to every dweller in the United States and yet neither will take steps to bring that knowledge to the general reader, though some historians, indeed, will go so far as to admit our postulate that a knowledge of Canadian history is almost as important to citizens of the United States as a knowledge of English history. No student can acquire that knowledge either from the usual histories to which the general public has ready access, or from those which the students in institutions of learning are obliged to study. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Canada Geography plays such an influential part in the past story and the present condition of that long string of British North American provinces which, stretching right across North America, now comprise the Dominion of Canada, that some preliminary indication of its character seems indispensable here. The shape of the Dominion is, in short, unique among countries - among those at least which count for much in our modern civilization. It has affected its history in the past so vitally and influences all its political, commercial, and social considerations so strongly to-day, that a general idea of its physical characteristics seems vital to a proper understanding of its past and present conditions. Book Canada Nova Scotia New Brunswick and Other British Provinces in North America Vol 1

This book was released on 2017-10-11 with total page 594 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Canada, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Other British Provinces in North America, Vol. 1: With a Plan of National Colonization Gas Lights, Steam Navigation, a Civic Police, Slave Emancipation, Cheap Postage, or Free Trade - to meet with opposition, from the classes who are most slow to perceive the advantages of improvement, and from those who are interested in maintaining things as they are; so it would be vain to expect that a proposition so bold and comprehensive as that of introducing an entire new system of planting Colonies abroad, should be received even with general favour. It must pass through its ordeal of abuse, ridicule, scorn, and contempt, like all other projects; and Time alone will decide whether it has within it the elements of truth, justice, and practicability, to sus tain it through the conflict. I beg the favour, therefore, of those to whom this proposition seems at first uninviting, to remember well, that it is the common trick of those who will not give themselves the trouble to examine what is new, to excuse their indolence, and flatter their self love at the same time, by affecting a degree of wisdom so superior to that of ordinary mortals, as to be able to pronounce judgment without weighing the evidence, and oracularly to condemn everything which they will not give themselves the pains to understand, as visionary and impracticable. This has been the sentence of shallow-minded men, in every age, on every subject that was in advance of their own understanding or their own industry to make them selves thoroughly acquainted with; and this is the cuckoo-note of shallow-minded persons still. Book The History of Canada Vol 4 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The History of Canada Vol 4 Classic Reprint written by William Kingsford and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-26 with total page 626 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Canada, Vol. 4 The first of these events is so closely connected with Canada, that it calls for a special narrative of what took place in connection with the province. Moreover it was the direct cause of the settle ment of Upper Canada by a British population; a fact which must be kept in view in the history of Ontario for the following seventy years. It created a dominant feeling in the minds of the first settlers and their children; of those who suffered to sustain the United Empire, the U. E. Loyalists, as their descendants proudly call themselves. These men sacrificed all they had in this world, and left behind them many of the associations which make life dear, to carve out of the woods a hard, toilsome existence, that they might live and die under the British flag; and they were not unhappy, for they acted up to their convictions, and from their sense of duty; and they retained in the greatest trial and privation, the proud feeling of unswerving self-respect. The second period is constituted in the quarter of a century, during which the province of Canada, embracing the present provinces of Ontario and Quebec existed as a unity until 1867, when confederation of the whole of the British North American provinces took place: at which date the third period commences when British America became known as the Dominion of Canada. Download or read book Canada and Its Provinces Vol 9 of 22 written by Adam Shortt and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-16 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Canada and Its Provinces, Vol. 9 of 22: A History of the Canadian People and Their Institutions; The Dominion, Industrial Expansion British North America is new in the sense of having come newly into touch with civilization and possessing natural resources ready to be used for the first time. Its people are new in the sense that they are a union of diverse elements now for the first time brought together into a mass that is growing into a nation. Corning freely from all parts of the Civilized world, the newcomers applied the overflowing capital of other lands and the tools and skill perfected elsewhere by the experience of centuries to the extraction of wealth from a territory only explored in fulness within the memory Of man, and never fully utilized in any part of it for the service of man till the newcomers them selves appeared on the scene. They found themselves con fronted with native inhabitants, not indeed well disposed to them, but unable to throw serious obstacles in their way. The same good fortune had aided the American Colonies, now the United States of America. In both cases the trowel has done more than the sword for the conquest of the country.
