This book was released on 2024-10-04 with total page 73 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the economic development of the southernmost quarter of the parish of Kilfinan - Kerry of Kilfinan - in the Cowal peninsula of Argyll, Scotland, during the period 1790-1870, which has become known in the United Kingdom as the Industrial Revolution. The examination begins by looking at the significant changes in agriculture and land use as subsistence farming was pushed out by sheep, with residents turning to herring fishing to compensate for their loss. The opening of a gunpowder factory in the parish stemmed the tide of departures by providing paid work for the existing population and attracting the inward migration of skilled workers from elsewhere. It also led to investment in infrastructure, with the construction of new roads and piers. The book also looks at the development of tourism to the parish with its proximity to the Central Belt and the advent of cheap and plentiful steamers bringing members of the urban middle class, where many eventually decided to build the Victorian villas that exist along the shore, creating new opportunities for the people of Kerry of Kilfinan.

Download or read book Debating the Highland Clearances written by Eric Richards and published by Edinburgh University Press. This book was released on 2007-07-12 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Storm clouds always gather over the story of the Highland Clearances. The eviction of the Highlanders from the glens and straths of the Highlands and Islands of the north of Scotland still causes great historical dispute more than a century after the events. The Highland Clearances also generated a great deal of contemporary controversy and documentation. The record comes in diverse forms and with radically different provenances, offering excellent material for exercises in historical analysis and selection. Debating the Highland Clearances introduces the Highland Clearances as a classic historical problem. Eric Richards reviews the historical debate and examines the methods and sources employed by the combatants past and present. The debates among historians, novelists, politicians and economists are no less passionate today and raise major questions about interpretation and the appropriate frame of reference for the noisy and continuing public debate about the Highland Clearances. Download or read book A History of the Highland Clearances written by Eric Richards and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-08-05 with total page 455 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1982, A History of the Highland Clearances looks at the forcible clearance of tenants from land they had farmed for centuries by landlords in the Highlands of Scotland in the early nineteenth century. It examines the general context of historical change, provides a full narrative of the clearances and offers a critical evaluation of the documentary sources upon which the entire story depends. By placing his subject in its historical perspective and into the context of the rest of Britain and Europe, Eric Richards vividly illustrates the realities of the Highland experience in the age of the clearances.

Download or read book Argyll written by Ian Bradley and published by Saint Andrew Press. This book was released on 2015-09-30 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Argyll is the beautiful, wild and inspirational home of Celtic Christianity. It is the spiritual heartland of Scotland and, some would say, of the whole United Kingdom. Until now, no-one has sought to uncover the reasons why the spiritual landscape of Argyll is so distinctively unique, rich and varied. Why is it characterised by a more gentle, liberal, mystical and liturgical Christian culture than the harsher Calvinist evangelism of the neighbouring Highlands and the Western Isles? Why has it produced such a disproportionately large amount of beautiful devotional material? This joyful book, with a cover image by popular artist JoLoMo, is impressionistic and accessible but always of the highest scholarly standards. It reveals the dominant themes and figures in Argyll’s spiritual landscape. Ian Bradley’s love of Argyll shines through as he takes both a geographical and biographical approach and looks at the interplay of landscape and Christian belief through such figures as Columba, Carswell, sundry Campbells, George Matheson, George MacLeod and others. Drawing on extensive original research and interviews with a wide variety of people, including many Church of Scotland ministers and lay people, this is an enthralling and fascinating read for all who are interested in Scottish history and identity, Celtic Christianity and Scotland’s spiritual heritage.
